Subject: NHC 2nd Round: Call for Judges and Stewards
The 2nd Round of the AHA National Homebrew Competition will be held June
19-20 in conjunction with the National Homebrewers Conference at the
Holiday Inn O'Hare International in Rosemont, IL. Judging sessions are
Thursday 1:30-5:30 and Friday 9:00-noon, with a judges' breakfast Friday
8:00-9:00.
Please help us evaluate some 672 of the best homebrews in North
America! We need lots of judges to pull this off. If you are a BJCP
judge, or a pro with judging experience, and plan to be at the conference
or merely in the neighborhood, please send me a note. Here's what I need
to know:
1. Your BJCP rank and membership number.
2. Which categories do you have entries in?
3. Which categories do you prefer to judge?
4. Which categories do you prefer not to judge?
5. Which judging sessions are you available for?
Steward volunteers are also welcome. For more details on the conference,
please check out the website at http://www.chibeer.org/aha03.
Cheers,
Steve McKenna

Cheers to all,
Interesting topic...the club newsletter. Should we decide to be a club that is comfortable with an "electronic" newsletter, or keep on printing? How do we determine what is best for all concerned? Well..... How about a club vote??
Now... should the vote be an "electronic" one, or a paper ballot? Sorry...couldn't resist. :)
Personally, I motion that we have an open club vote, here on the magic computer box...and the final decision of the newsletter issue based on the tally of the vote.
Anybody want to second the motion?? :)
Cheers,
Steve

* The "ON THE BUS" Competition!
Kris England just officially registered our "ON THE BUS" ([name not

be done
while on the road, and winner to be announced before we hit Chicago.
All
Best-Of-Show, no subcategories, all BJCP styles allowed, winner take

We draw chalk marks on the bus tire and number the segments, then wager

Matt Peterson is taking reservations for them now - order by next
Thursday,
May 15!

Ok ya'll...there is another big brew this Sunday...yes mothers day.
When: 9am Sunday May 11th
Where: Scott Strands house (directions at the bottom)
What: German Alt bier
This is the first time using the new big brew system. It has a 50
gallon capacity...yes 50 gallons. We will be doing a partial mash and
making a german alt for the Club-only in the fall. We will be starting
at 9am and it should take about 6 hours or so. We have 4 spots left open
to get in and share the bier. Anyone interested email me. Even if you
are not one of the ones coming in on the beer still come!!! Its a
blast, you learn alot and get to share beer with good people (not
Cotton). Everyone is invited to come but make sure you bring some beer
along with you.
Kris
Scott Strand house
1335 Bradley St. From I 94, take 35E North to Maryland Ave. Go
East(right) on Maryland about 5 blocks to Burr St. Go North (left) 2
blocks to Ivy. Go East (right) 1/2 block and there will be a driveway on
your left. At the bottom of that driveway is our garage. If you miss the
driveway, the next street is Bradley. Take a left and we're the second
house on the left (big barn-looking white house). Our number is
651-771-0141 in case you get lost.
Come on people! We need at least 21 orders to get the
price break we were planning for. We have 18 that
have expressed interest and only 5 paid. So all of
you 18 already in, start working on those that have
not, we need at least 3 more!
Also get your money to myself, Jeff Cotton, Rick
Oftel, or Al Boyce sometime next week. Please
indicate what the money is for, so Cotton doesn't
spend it on his house.
Pete

I judged meads at the AHA first round in Chicago weekend before last. The
top mead was a Cranberry Blossom Mead. It had a wonderful aroma and a
tartness to the flavor. Both derived of cranberry honey. I got some
cranberry honey about a year ago from a farm in Darlington, Wi, just south
of Mineral Point. He attends the Madison Framer's Market on the square,
Saturdays in Madison. I get to Madison quite offend. He has Cranberry
Blossom, Clover, Wildflower, and (I'm not kidding) Mint. His name is AJ
Howery, email is lahowery(a)mhtc.net, phone number is 608-776-2443. I will
be down there Saturday, 31 May. I will bring back honey for anyone who
wants some. His prices are up this year. One gallon = 12 lbs = $24. Five
Gallons = 60 lbs = $110. Chris Hadden, what is the going rate at this
years MN farmer's market? If anyone wants honey from AJ, email me before
Thursday, 29 May, and I will call AJ Friday for pickup on that
Saturday. If you are ever in the Madison area, he will work with you to
deliver.
Bob
Ladies and Gents, As I sit here and sip a "Blood Mead" I thought, "hey, how about doing some announcing stuff to the Minnesota homebrewers." And then I got to thinking, "hey, what about those great folks over in St. Paul." So without any authorization or reservations, I started putting together a message about our next two meetings and since time is flying, it seemed appropriate to e-broadcast them (I love making up new words). So without any further adew and in reverse order, our next two events. First June and then May.
Dateline: Friday, June 13. Location: Land of Memories Campground - Mankato
Minnesota. Event: Prime your pump and find your tents, it's time to go camping.
The Minnesota Homebrewers Association cordially welcomes you to the first camp out event of 2003. Campers should generally drive down to Mankato and find the Land of Memories Campground located just west of Mankato on hwy 169. After crossing the Blue Earth River, turn right on to Hawley Street at the Municipal Campground sign. Then left onto Main Street. Main street goes right to the campground.
Now that you're at the campground and it's Friday the 13th, here is what we have planned. Did I mention, they allow beer?
Friday afternoon - evening. Decend or assend on Dave Bergs Bandana brewery. You know what a host Dave is so let's pay him weldome and try some of his new "flatland" creations. Let's see if he brought along the "Ringwood" culture?
Friday evening - back to the campground for camping (like duh).
Saturday morning - after coffee and a few snacks, drive to New Ulm for a tour of the Schells brewery. Some folks that missed the first night may wish to meet us at the brewery at 2:00 or so. After the tour, we head down a back road route and if anyone is interested, stop at Ted's brothers winery for the a two dollar tour.
>From here, back to Bandanna or the campground or your destination of choice.
I promised a message about the "big May event" so read on. Next Saturday, the MHBA has arranged a tour of Rahr malting in Shakopee. We will be touring (we believe) house #5 which is located just off hwy 13 on the north west corner. Tour starts at 1:00. Around 3:00, we will move to "New Shakopee" over to Jonathan's brewery for a bit of a meeting and a bit of thirst quenching.
Now here is the kicker. If you come on the tour, you need to bring some good beer. Not that stuff you pawn off on distant relatives! "If you know what I'm saying?" The folks at Rahr provided us with a extremely detailed tour last year and this is an opportunity to walk through the largest single facility malt house in the world! Just imagine, in our (ok not St. Paul) back yard.
Bring your camera! If the weather is decent we will likely go onto the roof. The view of is amazing.
So there you have it folks. A bit of beer stuff for the near future.
July 18 and 19 (I believe) is the club campout in Cokato. Yep, same place as last year - fondly remembered as the campground that drowned as it was blown away! With the weather we had last year, it is almost impossible (truly) for a repeat!
OK, let's review.
May 10 - Rahr - 1:00 Harkwells steak house 3:00
June 13 - Land of Memories campground - Mankato, Bandana brewery, Schells,
July 18-19 Cokato state wide campout Collingwood campground
August (Sturgis)
Take care and have a safe and enjoyable summer. May the beer you brew rise to the occasion!
