Judges & Stewards Needed For 2005 Upper Mississippi Mash-Out - Jan
27th-Jan 29th
The Minnesota Homebrewer's Association and the St. Paul Homebrewer's
Club need your help.
We're judging an estimated 300+ entries in Minneapolis over 2 evenings
in January for a national competition sanctioned by the American
Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Beer Judge Certification Program
(BJCP).
If you are a BJCP judge please sign up to judge for at least one session
and possibly for an entire evening.
If you are not a BJCP judge we can use your help as a Steward. The
Stewards will:
- Distribute scoring sheets and other supplies to judging tables
- Bring entries to the judges as requested
- Help cleanup (yes, it can get messy)
- Learn how to judge beer
- Taste a variety of homebrews
- Participate in some ad-hoc partying after the judging sessions
The Mash-Out is a prelude to being a regional judging site for the AHA
National competition in the spring of 2005. We'll need as much help as
possible and encourage you to start helping with the Mash-Out.
How we say thanks to the judges and stewards:
- receive a bottle of commemorative beer
- will be eligible for door prizes
- Friday night party - keg of Zum Uerige Alt!!!!!!!!
- Saturday breakfast and lunch

Anyone heard of Cold Stone Brewery? A guy at work spotted it in
Burnsville (Lakeville?) over the weekend.

Another thing to remember about the winemaking kits is that there is a huge variety of styles available, and most shops don't stock all of them, but if there is something specific you want, they will probably special order it for you. I have a Selection Premium Australian Shiraz going now that WindRiver special ordered for me, and I would guess the other shops would do the same if they are already doing business with a distributor that handles the kit you are looking for.

Thanks everyone for the responses. We went to Midwest and bought several kits yesterday including a selection estate one for Red Zinfandel that looks very promising. We also got some port, a barolo and a chilean malbec. So should have a good selection soon!
Overalll midwwest had an OK selection. I will be checking out Windriver and Northern Brewer in the future for other choices.
Thanks
Kirby

I have purchased kits from both Windriver and Midwest.
I prefer the Selection Premium kits--more money, but consistently excellent results.
If you are looking for a less expensive option, Windriver currently has a few styles on closout at a reduced price.

Where's a good place in the twin cities for buying wine kits and or juice?
Thanks

There's a block of room reserved for the contest next month at the Holiday Inn Metrodome.
If you call in to reserve a room ask for 2005 Upper Mississippi Mash Out.
Also, it is set it up for internet reservations. The web site is www.metrodome.com. Click on reservations and enter the night - at the bottom of the page is the box for group booking code.
Enter UMM in that box. $89 plus tax room rate
For more details, see the web site: http://mnbrewers.com/mashout

So with mutiple entries I don't have to figure out which one is best
(or worst) ahead of time :-)
That means I should do an eis-lambic experiment, that should lower the
pH of the beer even more. It seems unlikely to get it even a tenth of
a pH or so lower but I may have to try. That isn't going to make the
beer any more mellow.

I agree with Dave - I like the Selection Premium kits.
Midwest Supply (near Hwy 100 & 36 street) also carries wine kits.
