By popular demand, The 2005 Upper Mississippi Mash-Out is hosting a NEW
CATEGORY this year:
THE NEW ENTRANT CATEGORY
http://www.mnbrewers.com/mashout
This category is for home-brewers who have NEVER entered a homebrew contest
before. This category will be judged by one Grand Master BJCP Judge and
two National BJCP Judges, and special attention will be given to making
sure the scoresheets are thorough and helpful to the brewers.
THIS IS A MEDAL CATEGORY, and the winner of the category WILL PROGRESS TO
THE BEST OF SHOW!!
If you've ever considered entering a homebrew contest and for whatever
reason have not gotten around to it until now - this is your chance.
* You will be competing ONLY against other brewers who have never entered
before (not those "Medal Hungry Wolves"!!)
* Your entries will be judged by the most highly ranked BJCP judges in the
region.
* ANY style of beer is open to this category.
Give it a shot! What have you got to lose??
And while you're at it, why don't you come to the Awards Ceremony on Jan
29, 2005 at 8pm at Summit Brewery and pick up your medal in person! And
while you're there, you may as well enjoy some Summit Beer! And if you're
really into it, sign up for the 5 course BEER DINNER that starts at 6pm at
Summit, prepared by Master Chef Manfred Krug! And if you're really, REALLY
into it, come Thursday and Friday and volunteer to help at the contest,
volunteer to be a Steward, or even volunteer to be an apprentice Judge!
See you there!

Hi Jim,
When it comes to cooking, I generally don't get too uptight about recipes, and I often experiment using whatever I have on hand, but here is the basic formula for the Hoppy Joes from the Christmas Party:
4# Ground Beast, browned and drained
1 Lg. can Vegetable Beef Soup
2 Sm cans Chicken Gumbo Soup
3 Med. Chopped onions
1 Cup Chopped celery
3 bottles of IPA--one in the pot and two in the cook. I used Mojo for the Christmas Party.
Mustard, Ketchup, Salt and Pepper to taste.
Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes over low heat--longer is better.
For the Christmas party I made it the night before and threw it in the crock pot on the afternoon of the party. Like a lot of things, it gets better with age. The recipe can easily be modified depending on the size of the group, but I usually make more because it works well for leftovers. I like this basic recipe for parties because it is hassle-free and goes well with a pint or two of good beer. If you use extra lean Beast and the Campbell's "Healthy Choice" version of the soups, it is actually not too bad for pub food...
Cooking is a lot like brewing--Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew, and everything will be marvelous...
Dave

At the Christmas Party, someone served up "Hoppy Joes". My wife would like the recipe and wondering if someone had it handy?
Any plans on posting other recipies??
Thanks!

Congratulations to Kris England who was just named the Director
of the newly created BJCP Continuing Education Program (CEP).
Over the next few weeks Kris will be working to with newly
named Assistant Directors (Kevin Pratt and Ted Hausotter) and
others to formulate the details of how Continuing Education
will work within the BJCP.
Kris brings amazing enthusiasm for beer, and beer judging, and
the BJCP to the program. We can expect the CEP to improve the
training of judges and the quality of judging in competitions.
With Kris' appointment as CEP Director the MHBA becomes a
strong player in the BJCP with:
Al Boyce - Regional BJCP Representative
Kris England - CEP Director
Steve Piatz - Western Exam Director

The Minnesota Home Brewers Association will again be offering the Beer Judge
Certification Program classes this winter, starting Tuesday January 4th.
If you are interested in taking the class but didn't receive an e-mail today
with the class schedule please contact me - I probably don't have you on the
list. The class may already be full but we won't know until the 1st class
if everyone who signed up will be there.

Good list Rick!
And yes we have a January meeting scheduled - at Summit Brewing for the
Upper Mississippi Mash-Out Awards Ceremony on January 29th, at 8pm.
...Unless you want to come early for a five-course beer dinner for $25,
cooked by Chef Instructor Manfred Krug (yes, the son of our OWN Al Krug!),
which starts at 6pm. This will be the BIGGEST club event of the year!
(Yes, bigger than the Christmas Party, and bigger than the club campout!)
YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS! Free Summit Beer! Free cool door prizes!
Free speechifying by Chef Krug about pairing food with beer (or vice
versa.... )
And oh - if you want to enter a few beers in the contest, you MIGHT take
home THE GOLD as well!!
See everybody there!

Subject: Christmas Greetings - MHBA
Brewers, Gentlemen, Ladies, and Friends.
Greetings from the Minnesota Homebrewers Association. I hope your
Christmas or Holiday celebration is enjoyable, relaxing, and fun. Possibly
you will get or give that new brewing gadget. Maybe it will be some
special beer under the tree. Whatever it is, remember that all beer is
brewed by a brewer with a smile on his or her face. The smile is a
requirement; not an option.
As I reflect back on 2004, I would like to thank the official staff of the
MHBA for their participation with events, meetings, and fun stuff. It
truly takes a bunch of work to keep a club together and functioning and I
would like to make a toast to Jonathan and Dave for doing such a great job.
Looking forward to 2005, it is always a good thing to think about change
and responsibilities. Unfortunately, what usually happens is one of the
board members asks the membership for assistance and no one responds.
Sometimes, someone sort of responds and we twist their arm into submission
but all kidding aside, your club needs you. It is time for you to ask what
you can do for your club.
Let me give you a hint ok?
1. Volunteer to organize a meeting by picking the location, date, and
topics. Find someone in the club willing to participate or talk (can't
think of many that would fit that bill).
2. Schedule a BBQ in your back yard. These events are always welcomed in
most neighborhoods and unless you are hosting Mick Sterling, the events can
go quite late. Best months are May to September.
3. Volunteer to be an officer for a year. The election process is fairly
simple and we are always happy to include multiple names on the ballot!
4. Volunteer to coordinate a visit. This isn't very demanding but
requires that you know someone in the industry. Basically, you get someone
to stop at a meeting to give away free stuff and talk about a beer related
subject. Simple, fairly easy, and free stuff!
5. Tell Jokes. Nothing goes further than a funny story or joke especially
after a few beers.
6. Bring beer to meetings. Another popular activity that gets you
noticed. Please bring your choice stuff and not the swill or the dregs.
7. Just show up. Meetings are great especially when people attend. You
know that song about the tree in the forest that nobody hears. Sort of
goes along with a meeting that nobody attends.
So not that we have your attention, don't be shy. Send message, give us a
call, e-mail Jonathan or Dave Cox. Have a great holiday and a safe New
Years.
See you, er,...............do we have a January meeting set up yet?
