I've had several conversations with the staff at City Hall including the
Police Dept.
The problem with sales of growlers at Hops Eden Prairie is due to a city
ordinance. There are two reasons:
1 - The police are concerned about public safety, i.e. people take a
growler, drink it and do dumb things.
2 - The city controls off-premise liquor sales and actually owns the only
stores in the city. They don't want competition. The Liquor Director was
actually interested in selling the growlers at the stores, but that
wouldn't be very good.
To get this changed:
1 - we'd need to contact the City Manager and ask that the ordinance be
repealed/changed/whatever.
2 - we'd need to give a presentation to the City Council and then they
would have to approve it.
Not sure what the club could really do, I don't know how many of us live
and/or work in Eden Prairie.
Maybe some petitions at the restaurant and other restaurants, maybe some
emails, maybe boycott their stores (like both of us who live in Eden Prairie)

So the Ren Fest Demo is a go as I said before. We will be making a
steinbier and doing a modern demo as well if we have enough people. I
need to know who wants to come and help and also your costume size :)
Yes, they provide costumes for us!! The date is Sunday August 17th and
I need to know who is going by Monday morning!!!

info
In celebration of Northern Brewer's 10th Anniversary (1993-2003),
we are offering free shipping on all orders over $50. This is the first
time we've had a major sale like this for our mail order customers, and
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit nervous it!
Here are some important conditions:
- Orders must be received by Tuesday, August 12th at 11:59 pm.
- Orders *must* be placed on-line - http://www.northernbrewer.com
- Free shipping can be extended only to orders shipped within the
continental United States.
- Not valid with any other offer or discounts (or we'll certainly lose
our shirts!)
Remember, shipping is a pretty expensive part of your order, and
for the next week, we're going to pick up the tab. There's no better
time to stock up for the upcoming brewing/winemaking season!
Thanks for all your support over the past 10 years, and here's to 10 more!

Growler Alert! I am forwarding this release from one of my favorite brew
pubs, the Fitgers Brewhouse in Duluth. For those of you who have not had
the experience, they have an amazing variety of styles and produce some
fantastic beers. My personal favorites are the triple-hopped El Nino IPA
and the stout. I feel a road trip coming on...

When:
Tuesdays at 6pm starting Sept 6th (tentative). It will last 14 weeks and
the test will be December 6th or the 13th.
Where:
St Louis Park/ Hopkins at Pete and Kleins (directions later)
Cost:
$50 for first timers and $30 for people who have taken the test before.
This is not a direct cost because all of it will be used to pay for your
exam in December.
Size:
20 people max!
Key points
1. The main reason I chose to charge for this class is because I only
want the most committed people coming to class and this way we wont
loose people along the way.
2. Another reason to keep the class size small, other than space, is
because there can be much more interacting with a smaller group and much
more hands on.
3. Refunds will not be given!!!! Gotta choose now if you are attending
or not
Drop-In's
This is for the few people who can make very few classes but would still
like to be involved. People are welcome to attend class as long as:
1. I ok it
2. There is space
3. Cost $5/ class
4. Bring 6 pack of the weekly style of beer
Class Schedule:
I have attached a copy of the tentative class schedule and topics. I
have changed things around quite a bit (with help from Al..thanks buddy)
which should hopefully streamline the class a little more and make it
more progressive and more inductive to learning. The first 3 styles of
the class will be mead, fruit/ vege/ spiced beers and ciders. I put
them first because they are not on the exam and should be a fun start.
I have knocked out/ introduced a few tech topics:
KO'd = Extract brewing, Troubleshooting 2
Intro'd = Packaging and Doctored Beer II
The reason for this change was that extract brewing is not on the
test and troubleshooting 2 can be done in one session. Also I really
think its necessary to do a packaging topic (kegging and bottling) and
another doctored beer session towards the end of the class. This
doctored session will be different from the first in that all of the
flavors will be at their thresh hold and MORE importantly we will be
focusing on how do you tell the brewer to fix XYZ.
The styles progress from lighter to darker, where possible, and
always coincide with three upcoming club only competitions. Also the
last class, the study session, will absolutely focus on what you need to
know for the test and what you dont. Another difference will be that
the first thing we will do every week, before drinking, is break off
into groups and actually judge a beer, score it then discuss it. So its
equates to MORE PRACTISE JUDGING = MORE EXPERIENCE = BETTER SCORE
SHEETS. These score sheets will be collected from time to time to see
how you are progressing. In addition, we will have mini-quizzes each
week on the styles and tech topic so 1) to give you experience with
questions you may be asked and more importantly 2) give you hand (not
wrist) the much needed workout it will need to take the LONG exam.
Finally, everyone from last years class seems to agree upon the fact
that the tech topic was skimmed over way to quickly and not enough
attention was given which we will give much greater focus. Im also
toying with the idea of holding a pre-test the weekend before the study
session so that you can get some feedback on what you need to work on.
So here is basically the way the class will run:
Class Breakdown:
30min - Judging
60min - Tech topic
30min - Quizzes
60min - Beer styles (drinking part)
So get back to me ASAP because the spots are already filling up!!!!

Scottish Favourite leaves competition 'Bitter & Twisted'
A Scottish beer wins Champion Beer of Britain for the second year in a row!
Champion Beer of Britain 2003 announced at the ‘Biggest pub in the World’
The Great British Beer Festival, Tuesday 5th – Saturday 9th August, London
Olympia
Issued: 2.30pm, 5th August for immediate use
‘Bitter & Twisted’ brewed by Harviestoun of Dollar in Clackmannanshire was
today judged to be the best beer in Britain by a panel of brewers, beer writers
and journalists. This is the second year in a row that a Scottish brewery has
won this prestigious award following the success of Caledonian’s Deuchars IPA
in 2002.The beer is described in the 2003 edition of the Good Beer Guide as,
‘a refreshingly hoppy beer with fruit throughout. A bitter-sweet taste with a
long, dry, bitter finish. A golden session beer.’The Scottish brewed beer was
chosen as the overall winner from over fifty finalists in eight categories
including beers from tiny micros to major regional brewers.Mike Benner, CAMRA’s
Head of Campaigns said, "It’s great news for Harviestoun and for Scotland.
Bitter & Twisted has long been a favourite of beer drinkers and I’m very pleased
to see them win the most prestigious beer competition."
Ken Brooker, Owner of Harviestoun said "I’m overjoyed. It really proves that
Scottish brewers are leading the way on tasty and distinctive beers. I am
pleased that all the hard work from the team at Harviestoun has paid off. It’s a
great way to launch our new brewery building."
The Silver award went to Crouch Vale Brewer’s Gold from Essex. Bronze went to
Lidstones Rowley Mild from Suffolk.
