Since Al kicked it off and the responses are beginning I would like add
that we/I will, in some form tabulate the responses and return a
summary/explanation of what it all means. It may be helpful, it may
not.

Curt Stock and I have been kicking around why people do or don't enter
beer contests. What's your reasons, either way?

Greetings,
Any suggestions for getting my 20 lb propane tanks filled?
Where do you go? What's the usual fee?
St. Paul/Midway, Minneapolis, and the NW suburbs are all on my way.
TIA,
Cheers,
Jim

I have not entered contests in the past because I keg just about everything I brew - I got tired of washing bottles a long time ago. I also have brewed to my own taste rather than to specific style guidelines.
I decided recently to bottle some batches so I have something to enter. The motivation for this change is that I have observed some contests and had my first experience judging, which led me to the following observations:
1) Entering contests provides constructive feedback which could help me become a better brewer, and I want to become a better brewer.
2) Contests are a way to support the club and promote homebrewing.
3) The people who enter these contests seem to have a lot of fun.
4) Rick is right - awards do look cool in a brewery.

So Curt, how much time do you devote to bottling, cleaning, counterflow cleaning, packaging, and contest entering for a typical (aka state fair) contest? Be honest - I only have time for one more.
You had how many entries?

Susan-
Cool! Thanks a lot for organizing it Susan! Can we also bring our club
banners to display at the booth?
I will print handouts for the MhBA, and I can bring a keg of St. Louis
Park tap water to the event.
Rick Oftel:
Can Susan use the MhBA jockey box for the water demo like we did last year?
That would save her from having to haul one down from Fargo. Also, how
many other MHBA / SPHC members would be willing to bring a keg of their
town's tap water? It would also be good if someone could bring a keg of
R/O water, a keg of carbon-filtered water, and a keg of spring water, for
people to try side-by-side.
Susan:
Can you keep the list of who's signed up to bring water?
Do you want some hop vines to decorate the booth? I think Mike Moranz
brought them last year.
Mike Moranz:
Do you want to donate a vine or two again? Anyone else with robust hops
who wants to donate a vine?

Hi everyone;
I just wanted to let everyone know that I will have a booth for the
American Homebrewers Association at the Autumn Brew Review
http://www.mncraftbrew.org/page3.html
If any of the local homebrew clubs would like to have information about
their clubs available at this booth you are more than welcome. Last year I
joined in with the MhBA booth and would like to return the favor. Their
was a tapping system with water from various areas around the cities which
was very good at drawing people into the booth. Many of the water kegs
were empty by the end of the day. If anyone was interested in setting
something like that up it would certainly be welcome.
If you have the information available I will be more than happy to hand out
information and sign up members for your club also.
If anyone is interested in this please contact me.
Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone there,
Susan

I enjoy sharing beer with friends and appreciate comments, good or bad, about the quality, flavor, aroma, etc. Schedules, time, projects, other hobbies, and honey-do take a bunch of time. Bottle accumulating, cleaning, rinsing, draining, filling, capping, and storing takes a bunch of time that I don't have. During winter, I usually bottle a few batches of "strong stuff" for next year but prefer larger stainless tanks for the bulk of my beverages.
I truly value the information that I have received by entering contests and wish I would take more time to enter and compete. Medals hanging in breweries are impressive. I believe I have my process fairly well in control but second, third, and fourth opinions are very valuable. I miss those independent comments.
Counterflow filling is almost a greater hassle (for me) than bottle conditioning and the results are barely adequate. The device has too much brass and very likely has too much hose.
One of the last reasons (other than nothing new in bottles) I seldom enter contests is because some of the beers (some = most) I brew fit into commercial and not home brew categories. I brew them because people seem to enjoy them and the kegs empty before the others.
We have all mentioned entering and wining. What I truly find to be a compliment (greater than fancy medals) is when someone tries a beverage and mentions how well it would have done if it had only been entered.

Jonathan previously requested usage of the Club Jockey box before I was aware that we were having a booth this year.

The display people were supposed to put the medals, labels for all the
winners and the first place winners board in the case Saturday night. Hopefully they
got it together last night.
Thank you, thank you, thank you and thanks to all that helped out.
(Especially Al Boyce)
The fair people want to make it an annual event. Why not! It should be bigger
and better next year; maybe we could participate in the parade. Hmmm a beer
float.
And now we know about those pickle ladies...
