Howdy Folks,
We will have a beer release, at the Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery, this Thursday, 8/21 from 5-6. "Hazed and Confused" was designed by our assistant brewer Josh Bischoff, he even had his girlfriend Karla help him mash in.
This is his rendition of a Pale American Wheat Beer. He brought in special yeast and put together a very smooth, refreshing, well built beer for you. Stop in and give it a try, pints are just $1 for the intro hour of 5-6pm. If you like it let him know, this is his baby. Don't forget your growler...or your Autumn Brew Review tickets.
Cheers,
Mike
River City Roundup entry fees are $5 for the first 3, $4 thereafter, and
checks should be made out to the Douglas County Fair.

No, it's been changed. It is $5 each for the first three entries. Any
entries after that are $4 each.

Allan,
We have developed a new website with updated entry information. I have
sent the URL change to the BJCP so the competition schedule can get updated
on their website. Our competition prefers to use the standard BJCP bottle
labels and entry forms. The Douglas County Fair method of catergorizing
doesn't really gibe with what us homebrewers are accustomed to, so we are
gravitating away from their past methods. I will address the
administrative side with them so the competitors don't have to deal with
it.

You should find all of the answers to your questions at this site. Entry
and shipping info is available, including the downloadable entry forms and
bottle tags.
Hope this helps. This will definitely run smoother next year!

Thanks to Jim LaRocque for organizing a very successful first annual
Minnesota State Fair Beer competition last Saturday, Aug 16! We judged 85
beers, starting at 10am and going until 7:30pm. We had a fun time judging
with the Jelly Ladies the next row over (ask someone who was there...!)
The Best-Of-Show and awards ceremony will be this Saturday, Aug 23, at the
State Fair - on the Education Building's outdoor stage - from 11am until
2pm. Our very own president, Rick Oftel, will be the Emcee, and rumor has
it that there will be a LIVE! extract brewing demo during that period as
well. Stop by if you're at the fair!
Thanks to the following people who helped judge on Saturday:

Spencer Butler

Paul Dienhart
Kris England
Steve Fletty
Chris Hadden
Sean Hewitt

Just a quick thank you for attending the "MHBA social meeting" last Friday. Dawn and I had a great time and we hope you did too. The great turnout surprised her a wee bit but I did tell her we were having a meeting.
I forgot to actually call the meeting to order and discuss club related news. I realize that the news department has been a bit slim lately and take responsibility.
The Boiler is scheduled to make an appearance in the very near future. David and Gloria are working together to get the publication to the press.
Thanks to active club members dues and the tenacious efforts of Jeff Cotton and Al Boyce, MHBA Club funds have recovered to the point we can start utilizing the CSPS hall for future club meetings. It also appears we can get back on track and purchase our next "big batch" of club glasses.
Meetings for the rest of the year are a bit tentative but here is what I am planning. What would you, as an active club member, like your club to do?
September Barley Johns (sunset and outside)
October Summit
November Hops- EP (in memory of the Water Tower Patio)
December CSPS (Christmas extravaganza)
January Town Hall
February CSPS (officer election)
One final and personal note. The MHBA is a unique club with a large variety of members. Many members socialize and brew excellent beer. Some members regularly share a wealth of knowledge via the internet. Some members are great organizers of events. The club has a large group of can-do members and we are thankful for their accomplishments and contributions.
I hope this years meetings have been enjoyable. I truly look forward to participating with the MHBA for the remainder of the year and look forward to continuing to assist with a few projects like the "brew-a-rama," campouts, and all grain demonstrations.
Personally and professionally, my job and list of home projects has become very demanding. I have been challenged to allocate adequate time resources to club activities while maintaining a decent supply of my favorite liquid refreshment. Anything you can suggest or help with is appreciated.
So there are some rambling from the heart. I hope this message reaches you in good health and that it is late enough in the day to have a cool beverage in hand. Happy brewing.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel
MHBA
Entries for the next High Plainers Brewer of the year contest (River City
Roundup) must be received between 8/25/2003 and 9/6/2003. I would like to
ship club entries by Tuesday August 26th to ensure they don't sit in a truck
over a weekend.
If entries are not available until later in the week I could make the ship
date Tuesday September 2nd, but that pushes delivery close to the deadline.
Entry details:
1) 2 bottles per entry.
2) $5 per entry for 1-3 entries, $4 per entry over 4.
3) No labels, markings or bottle decorations other than OFFICIAL ENTRY LABEL
or entry will be refused.
I am trying to get clarification about the entry form, categories and the
entry labels (which aren't posted on the website). I will post the
clarification as soon as they answer my e-mail.
For details, please check the website:

Congratulations and THANKS to Kris for organizing the Ren Fest Stein Beer
demonstration.
Also thanks to all the other participants. I had a great time heating rocks
over hot coals.
Please thank Jenna and the whole Ren Fest organization for letting us do the
demonstration.
For all those who couldn't make it to the festival, an Alt beer was mashed
and boiled using the stein beer technique of heating rocks to white hot over
an open fire, then dropping the hot rocks into the brewing vessel. It takes
a lot of hot rocks to boil a beer but the aroma was wonderful and we did
draw an audience.
