Congratulations to all the winners and kudos to those that organized the

With 2 contests left to go, The Minnesota Home Brewers Association has 10
brewers in the running for the High Plains Brewer of the Year trophy.
Let's enter some beers, boys! We have River City Roundup, then Hoppy
Halloween left to wrest the trophy from Curt Stock and Susan Ruud, in first
and second place, respectively....

REMINDER:
Entries for the next High Plainers Brewer of the year contest (River City
Roundup) must be received between 8/25/2003 and 9/6/2003. I would like to
ship club entries by Tuesday August 26th to ensure they don't sit in a
truck
over a weekend.
If entries are not available until later in the week I could make the ship
date Tuesday September 2nd, but that pushes delivery close to the deadline.
Entry details:
1) 2 bottles per entry.
2) $5 per entry for 1-3 entries, $4 per entry over 4.
3) No labels, markings or bottle decorations other than OFFICIAL ENTRY
LABEL
or entry will be refused.
Rules, entry form and bottle labels are available on their website:

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE BOTTLES TO SHIP SO WE CAN ARRANGE DROPOFF OR

Its seems from the lack of response that people are confused about the
class. The cost for the class, $30 if you have taken the test before and
$50 if this is your first time, goes directly to pay for your test in
December. None of this money goes to the club it all goes towards your
test. I have only 5 or 6 people signed up for sure right now.
In short, the class is on Tuesday evenings (6pm) and starts September 2nd
and goes 13 weeks with the test on December 6th. I have attached a copy of
the tentative schedule.
Let me know if there are any questions,
Kris

Congratulations to all of the folks that participated, entered, judged, and commented and special congratulations to Jim LaRocque for putting this event on the map. I had initially hoped to help with this event but my time consuming family reunion has taken top priority for afternoons and week-ends.
Here is a pitch for a future club event - counterflow filling. The whys (obvious if you want metals and can't enter kegs), the whens (when do you bottle vs enter in contest), and the hows (what style of goodies, technique, pressure, hose length, cleaning, temp, etc).
Thanks again and congratulations.

May want to check with the River City Roundup people. I think they have
a label contest. See if they have any insight guidelines.

A good job by the organizers.
An interesting addition to a competition like this might be a label
competition. Since in the BJCP portion of beer judging we want
anonymous bottles the labels could be submitted as a separate thing
(like the Brew Your Own label competition). We could even do larger
than bottle sized so the labels are visible in the display case. We
would have to come up with a few guidelines on how to judge labels, even
more subjective than beer judging.

that was pretty close to the same comments my wife had Sunday looking at the
display.
- she was underwhelmed by the display:
The bottles weren't labeled.
There were no ribbons
No signage to speak of at all.
Just bottles with a few category signs.

Hmmm... Can't decide if I should invest in a
Hanoi brewpub or portapotties. They probably
picked up the dirty habit from the French. 8^)>

Drawback of a Beer Drinking Culture
HANOI - Vietnam's capital city is cracking down on people
who urinate in public and will fine offenders up to $3.
Inspectors will prowl the streets of Hanoi to nab people in the
act, Nguyen Hai, of the Hanoi culture department, was quoted
on Friday as saying.
But even before the campaign, Hai is conceding the widely
practiced act will be hard to control.
"Truly speaking we would not be able to settle 100 percent of the
violations," Hai said in the Justice Ministry's newspaper Phap Luat (Law).
A beer drinking culture and lack of public toilet facilities make the
sight of men urinating along highways and even downtown a
common sight in Vietnam's cities.
Vietnam is seeking to spruce up its image prior to hosting the
South East Asian (SEA) Games in December.
Why don't you just cut up some old shipping pallets! They have much more character

I'm planning on oaking a blueberry mead.
I see Northern Brewer has 4 oz of oak chips for $1.25.
How much should I use and for how long?
