Greetings fellow homebrewers. I realize the notices have been a little
lacking lately. I am in the process of moving all club e-mail to a new
address at home which is mnbrewing(a)earthlink.net You can send stuff
there and I will activate the server to that address and hopefully, I
can be a little more active in the near future.
The real reason for this message is to announce that tonight is a
repeat of last years study session except there is more stuff to eat.
We have a big chunk of cheese, three kinds of potato salad, cole slaw,
and BBQ chicken. You may remember that I am fairly comfortable cooking
in the rain, well tonight may be a repeat.
Anyhow, hope to see you this evening. Stay tuned for the next club
meeting. Still tentative but will occur about mid month. CSPS hall is
out unfortunately.
Take care

2:00pm to 11:59pmish.
Yes, I know, it's the same day 2003 Upper Mississippi Mash-Out, but I
wasn't able to reschedule it. I do have the party room for the whole day
and night, so there might be time for people to squeeze my party in.
We'll have 40 gallons of my homebrew on tap (7 different styles: Porter,
Wheat, Cream Ale, American Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Belgian Ale and Raspberry
Ale). There's an indoor pool, and locker room if anyone wants to swim.
Please bring a chair so everyone has a place to sit.
Gag gifts welcome, but not required.
Directions: From St.Paul take Hwy.94 East to Radio Drive. Turn south
(right) onto Radio and go one block to Old Hudson Rd. Take a right onto
Old Hudson Rd. You'll pass by Tamerack Village, an animal hospital, a
boat shop, and Heppner's car wash. Just past Heppners car wash there is a
road to the left (Landau). Take a left onto Landau. Go up the hill.
You'll pass one set of town houses on the left. The club house is at the
top of the hill on the left.
Any questions, let me know,
Cheers!,

We're pushing through in the Senate in hopes of getting it into
conference commitee. I was shocked when I heard about this yesterday, as
I believe was Sen Pappas. She really wants to get this through this
year, not next.

I got this in the mail today from the Wisconsin State Fair, for all you
newbie BJCP judges (and old-bie ones too!)
- Al
---------------------------------
Dear BJCP Judge,
This letter is an invitation for you to judge or steward at this year's WI
State Fair Homebrew Competition - a BJCP certified event. This event will
be held Saturday, May 31st, 2003 at the East Exhibit Hall (near the Cream
Puff area) of the WI State Fair Park Grounds, West Allis, WI (just west of
Milwaukee, WI).
This year is the first year that the WI State Fair Homebrew Competition
has adopted the standard BJCP categories for entries & judging. One of
the many moves being made to make this event one of the great homebrew
competitions of the area. Last year's event had approximately 150
entries, and this year we're anticipating approximately 180+ entries. The
Competition's rules & regulations can be found at www.beerbarons.org for
your reference. Feel free to take a look at them and get a feel for how
this competition is coming along.
This is a qualified BJCP event, and I'd like to ensure all the judges &
stewards that they shall receive their earned BJCP points for volunteering
at this event.
The event starts at 9am, and includes a potluck lunch that we hold with
the Wisconsin Vintners Association, who is also holding their vintner's
competition at the same location. Parking passes are available by
request, and directions to the WI State Fair grounds are at
http://wistatefair.com/static/sf2/gethere/gethere.html and directions to
the East Exhibit Hall are at
http://wistatefair.com/static/sf2/facrentals/eastexhall.html.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (mobil/home
414-807-5230) or at belskyc(a)msoe.edu. Also, if you know anyone else that
would be interested in judging or stewarding, by all means pass this
information on to him or her. I hope to see you there at the Competition.
Cheers,
~Chris Belsky

AMERICAN HOMEBREWERS ASSOCIATION
2003 NATIONAL HOMEBREW COMPETITION CELEBRATES ITS 25th YEAR
Boulder, Colo. * April 1, 2003- The American Homebrewers Association® 2003
National Homebrew Competition (NHC) will celebrate its 25th anniversary, as
first-round entries are due April 9 - 18, 2003.
Hundreds of judges are expected to evaluate more than 3,000 NHC first-round
entries at nine regional-judging sites in the United States and Canada the
week of April 25. This year's number of entries is expected to exceed last
year's 3,074 entries.
"With more than twice as many entries as the next largest competition,
winning an award at the National Homebrew Competition is an honor unlike any
other in the world of homebrewing," said Gary Glass, NHC Director. "Getting
up on stage at the National Homebrew Competition awards banquet before a
cheering crowd of the most accomplished amateur brewers in North America is a
thrill that will never be forgotten."
The American Homebrewers Association NHC is an international competition that
recognizes the most outstanding homebrewed beer, mead and cider being
produced by amateur brewers worldwide.
The American Homebrewers Association is a division of the
Association of Brewers, established 1978 in Boulder, Colo., U.S.A.
In 1979, 34 entries competed in the first NHC held in Boulder, Colo. Now the
more than 3,000-entry competition is recognized as the world's largest
competition devoted to amateur brewers.
An additional regional-judging site, the East Region based in Cleveland, was
added this year to accommodate for the growth of the competition.
The competition's judge panels have evaluated an amazing number of more than
38,817 homebrews during the 24 years of competition.
A panel of brewing experts will judge the competition entries. First-round
winners will advance to the second round of judging, which will be held at
the American Homebrewers Association National Homebrewers Conference in
Chicago June 19 - 21, 2002. Awards for the best beer in the competition's
beer-style categories will be presented at the grand banquet Friday night of
the conference.
"The prestige of this competition attracts the best judges in the country,"
said Glass. "Every year we get judges coming from hundreds of miles away to
judge at the National Homebrew Competition. You will not find a more
qualified set of judges anywhere than the Best of Show panel that determines
the Homebrewer of the Year during the NHC finals."
Homebrewer of the Year award, sponsored by Munton's P.L.C., is the Best of
Show beer judged best from all gold medal winners in
24 beer-style categories.
The Ninkasi Award, named after the Sumerian Goddess of Beer Brewers, will be
given the winningest brewer in the second round of the NHC judging. Amateur
brewers earn points toward the award by placing in the 24 beer-style
categories during the second round. Gold medals earn six points, silver
medals earn four points and bronze medals earn two points. The Ninkasi Award
is sponsored by Boston Beer Company.
American Homebrewers Association members receive competition entry-fee
discounts. For more information on the AHA National Homebrew Competition,
visit www.beertown.org or contact Gary Glass, Association of Brewers, at
gary(a)aob.org.

As one of the judges who judged these beers last night, all I can say is
there are some phenomenal beers here. (I still don't know their names
until the winners are announced later today.)
These are mostly very strong beers. So, avoid problems parking and
driving home afterwards and take PUBLIC TRANSIT to the very door! Ride
the CTA Red Line "L" to Grand/State, and walk directly upstairs to Rock
Bottom. The Red Line has frequent service 24 hours. The CTA station,
which is practically in the basement of Rock Bottom, is closer than you
could possibly park. Also served by busses 65 Grand, 29 State, 36
Broadway.
