The entry count for the National Homebrew Competition this weekend is
roughly 570. We have nowhere near enough judges registered to evaluate that
volume of homebrew. If you are a BJCP judge or are a relatively experienced
homebrewer and wish to judge, please contact Joe Preiser (630.759.4569,
mailto:joe@chibeer.org) or myself (773.774.1752, mailto:jeff@chibeer.org)
The schedule is:
Friday, April 26, 7 p.m.
Saturday, April 27, 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Sunday TBA
We are judging at the Rock Bottom, 1 W. Grand at State in Chicago. The Red
Line of the "L" is literally right outside the door. You will judge in a
well lit room and eat and drink very well on Saturday with food from Chip
and beers from Pete, both of whom swept through the Brewpub Shootout this
year. Even if you can only judge part of the time, we can use you.
As a further perk, the Map Room will be offering $2.50 pints and $3.00
"Belgians" to participants in the NHC over the weekend but you must have
identified yourself as a judge/steward to us to get the discount. We
(minimally)intend to decend there on Saturday after a day of judging.
Hope to see you at the Rock Bottom!

May 4, High noon at Northern Brewer. This is National Homebrew Day and
since you're all homebrewers, this is your day!
Contact me if you have some equipment available to bring. I have a 8 gallon
kettle, burner, gas, kegs, and immersion chiller. That would work if this
were called "little brew day". Lets go folks, bring what you can and let's
boil something!
Ingredients shouldn't be a problem since we're at a homebrew shop but if you
have something to offer let us know.
Also, anyone with a portable freestanding overhead canopy in case of rain
would be highly respected. We'll be setting up in the back lot so lawn
chairs, coolers, hoses and all the accesories would help us relax, not
worry, and you know........

Hello, everyone. (ala Karl Haas)
Today I picked up a bottle of Nightmare Porter from the Whole Foods near
Ashland and Belmont. This is a CAMRA award winning brew and is well
deserving of the acclaim.
The label on this brew shows a silver horse rearing itself up as if it's
about to charge into the town it's glaring at with its menacing eyes.
This emblem is set upon a dramatic image of a spiked cemetery gate and a
tombstone that reads "Champion Winter Beer of Britain, 1997".
I must say, this is one of the best porters I've ever had. Soooo creamy
and smooth and rich... I don't know what kind of malts they used (the
label only says they used four malts), but the flavor the roasted barley
imparts to this beer is not as bitter as I'm used to with Sierra Nevada
or the various Goose Island porters I've had.
Not much in way of hops apart from a slight aroma and a slight back end
bitterness.
Truly a champion brew, IMHO. Be sure to pick some up!

I'm going to be resampling the meads we had at the Minneapolis Meading. If
anyone is interested in helping me polish off the meads this evening, drop
me a line. I live in Brooklyn Park.

I'm sorry, once again I seemed to have confused everyone on the list.
Cafe Twenty Eight (Old MFS #28 Upton and 43rd, 2blocks west of Lake
Harriet) 2724 W.43rd St. Mpls 612-926-2800, is not a brewpub(yet!). I
was just announcing the opening of a new place that cares about beer
(hey, the owner is the head brewer at RB). However, they have a very
impressive beer list, and if you're looking for somewhere to get some
top-knotch food and good beer....Plus, this gave me another chance to
advertise the place!
Cheers!
ps. If you haven't made plans for this weekend, don't forget the "I Love
Beer" pub crawl! (yet another shameless plug)

I just got the word from Todd (the brewer at Rock Bottom) about the new
restaurant he and his wife opened. It's located in the old fire station
in Linden Hills.

Just the other day, I was cleaning out the chemical cabinet and came across some 7.0 pH buffering solution for calibrating a pH meter. Since my meter has long since bit the dust and new batteries did not rejuvenate it and it was beyond the 1 year warranty, well, I threw it away.
If anyone has interest in this solution, respond by week end else it too may end up down the drain.
Price $1.00
Who says you can't get anything for a buck!

How many people plan to attend? I am going to make hotel reservations for the Inn on the Park.
