You will get retro-credit for your judging once you take the BJCP test. If you're too shy to judge, you can "Steward", which involves helping the judges.

After a bit of a hiatus, the second half of the Midwest Homebrewer of
the Year Circuit will swing into high gear later this month when the
Schooner Homebrew Championship begins accepting entries on 8/13.
Details here: http://www.theschooner.org/
Current standings are here: http://sphbc.truthbrew.com/mwhboy/
Schooner is the 7th of 12 contests, so there's still time to make up
some ground in the standings if you have your eye on the prize.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Guys and Gals,
About a year ago, we almost had the opportunity to adopt a small stretch
of highway and have our homebrew club name prominently displayed. I
checked with the same department and they have an opening in Hopkins and
a few of the more remote (outlying) locations.
I still have the e-mail list at home and hope we have enough volunteers
to accept this position. It would require two cleanup's per year and
would involve a 1 or 2 mile stretch of road. They request we perform
these duties for two years.
Let me know if you're still willing to participate. So far we have
Chris, Wilbur, Al (tentative) John L, Mike B, and Jonathan. I think we
need at least 12 show-up-ers which would likely require about 18
volunteers.
What does the group think? Like the thought of a highway sign stating
"Minnesota Homebrewers Association"?
Thanks
Rick

Subject: Mead Day Special Offer and more Evange-Ale-ist FUN!
Evange-Ale-ists, Happy August!
Don't forget that Mead Day is quickly approaching. I'm sure many of you are
planning to brew some mead, either at your home or a friends. If you haven't
yet registered your site, please do so now.
http://www.beertown.org/events/meadday/index.html
Like last year, Evange-Ale-ists have access to two different membership
options. You can offer the standard $5 off or you can give a FREE book with
a full price membership. In honor of Mead Day, August 4th, the book is The
Compleat Meadmaker, by Ken Schramm.
One other thing I wanted to point out, if you haven't yet noticed there are
now multi-year and lifetime Family memberships available at regular and
Evange-Ale-ist rates. Both of the membership forms attached have the family
membership options for you to offer to your friends and club mates.
Cheers,
Kathryn

Entries are now being accepted for Byggvir's Big Beer Cup at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival!

Hello Everyone.
Everything looks set for Mead Day at the Johnson's Farm. Russ and Winnie plan on doing some Honey extraction and processing demos like last year. They are both super knowledgable when it comes to honyey, so if you have any questions on what makes your honey taste like it does or why some are dark and otheres are light, etc. they'll surely know.
Winnie has promised a roast turkey for sandwiches like last year. If you're not into turkey bring a cooler! Better yet bring something edible to share!
The Johnson's recently harvested ~1000# of buckwheat and clover honey which they will sell at $2.25/# if you bring your own container.
This email is a final reminder to sign up for the trip on Team Roadkill's custom cruiser. We will be meeting at 8:30AM outside of Midwest Home brewing:
3440 Belt Line Blvd.
Minneapolis, MN 55416
There is still plenty of room on the bus, so please contact me if you are interested. Right now the cost is $25/person, but this cost will drop if more people come.
It is definately worth it too! You'll feel much better (...happier/drunker) not having to worry about sobering up before the hour drive back to the cities. If you haven't been to a MHBA Mead day, you can't appreciate how nice it is to have someone else driving, it's a wild time! I hear the bus has a new AC system this year too.
Also, the style of the month is Strong Ale (this includes Old Ale, and both English and American Barleywines). MhBA is allowed to select one beer to represent our club in the AHA COC
See you on Sat!

Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links.
(as always, if someone would be kind enough to forward this to sphbc . . . )
The bus is half full (or is it half-empty? . . . ) after less than one week of solicitations, so read the following quickly and carefully, then round up a spouse (many women come on this trip), friend, relative, neighbor, or co-worker, and send in your deposit. I'll take no more than 35 people, so act now! :) We will have plenty of room on the bus, as it seats 47, but we only take 30-35.
I'll set the scene--
You awaken just after sunrise on a deliciously crisp cool fall morn, and an immediate smile dawns on your countenance as you realize that for the next two days, all you need to do is sample Wisconsin beer, wine, and cheese, with no thought of driving, no thought of directions, indeed--almost no thought whatsoever.
The fall colors are spectacular as you are chauffeured through the rolling Wisconsin countryside, homebrews periodically coming your way. Great music and film gently caress your senses when you aren't taking a delightful cat nap in your luxury bus seat. There's a clean restroom always at the ready, and the other 30+ folks on the bus are tender, kind-hearted beer connoissuers just like you.
Every so often, the bus stops at a brewpub, microbrewery, winery, or cheesery. You sample, stretch, enjoy the warm fall sun on some patios, and finally, when sated, retire to the bus for a short repose till the next fun destination. You think to yourself, "wow--at $3.00+/gallon, I couldn't drive myself to all these places for anything near the $60 I paid for the entire bus ride!"
When all is said and done on Saturday, you have a lovely hotel to sleep in, while the Great Dane Brewpub beckons from across the street. Upon waking Sunday, the hotel serves a hot breakfast buffet, and then it's on to a special stop at Bleu Mont Cheese. The guy makes it himself in caves, and for $15 per person, we’re going to tour his operation, sample two of his wares, and each person takes home ½ pound of his best stuff! Then we will take our booty and eat it at the nearby winery, overlooking the WI River. Lunch Sunday is at an English-style pub, and dinner Sunday is at a German-style brewpub that specializes in German lagers.
The original message follows, but by now you should be on your way to your checkbook to write out the deposit! You really don't want to miss this one!

Now it's time to sign up for BEER GOOD BUS TRIP IV. For those who don't know, each fall I organize a bus trip through Wisconsin, focusing on brewpubs, but stopping at other places of interest as well. It all began when Al Boyce got us on a bus to the AHA National Convention in Chicago and we stopped at various beer hubs going out and coming back. Two years ago I took a group straight across WI, hitting eleven beer stops, last year we went through northern 'Sconnie, and this year we head down toward Madison. We take a luxury coach, complete with bathroom and movies.
We'll have the people's choice contest to start the trip (around 7:00 a.m. Saturday), and will return around 9:00 Sunday evening. We'll stay overnight in Madison, within staggering distance from Great Dane. Assuming 30 people come along, the bus cost will be around $60 per person. Just to be clear, I always pay the same amount for the bus and hotel as everyone. I don't pay my way off the rest of the group.
Don't be left behind. Send your non-refundable $50 deposit to John Longballa, 1211 Minnehaha Ave W, Saint Paul, MN 55104. Please include all contact information, including e-dress, and please indicate how you would prefer the room situation to be for your group. I won't take more than 35 people, so don't delay!
Thanks, John
