Subject: COMPETITION NEWS!
Here's competition news from the SAAZ club in Melbourne, Florida:
Commander SAAZ Interplanetary
Homebrew Blastoff
September 22, 2007

The Spacecoast Associates for the Advancement of Zymurgy are now accepting
entries for the 13th Annual Commander SAAZ Interplanetary Homebrew Blastoff.
The Commander SAAZ Interplanetary Homebrew Blastoff is an A.H.A. Sanctioned
homebrewed beer and mead competition sponsored by the Spacecoast Associates
for the Advancement of Zymurgy (SAAZ). Beers will be judged in accordance
with 2004 BJCP style guidelines. There are two Best of Show (BOS) awards,
one for beers and one for meads and ciders. We have the coolest BOS trophy
in the known universe. You can check it out on Commander SAAZ page of our
website (http://www.saaz.org) Medals and prizes are awarded for individual
category winners. The 2007 Rules and Minutiae are available on our website:
www.saaz.org
Back by popular demand is the Commander SAAZ Rocket Fuel Award! The rules
for the Rocket Fuel category are pretty simple. The beer must be based on a
BJCP beer/mead/cider category; however, the sky's no limit as far as alcohol
content. A minimum of 10% ABV is required to get the Commander's engines
running though. So dust off that Imperial Brown Ale, or that Strong Dark
Belgian Sextuple you have stashed away and see if it can help the Commander
get farther, faster!
The competition will be held on Saturday, September 22 with two prejudging
weekends on September 8-9 and September 15-16. Entry cutoff is Thursday,
September 6. If anyone is interested in judging either the pre-judging or at
the actual final day of competition, please contact Glenn Exline:

Good morning campers!
In the next few weeks, Shady Oak Road will be fitted with new signage
proclaiming a 2 mile stretch of road being cleaned by a highly organized
local club better know as "Minnesota Homebrewers Association." Due to
font limitations, the sign split "Home Brewers" but I think your
friends will get the message.
Now for the highly organized part.
We have 10 volunteers for cleanup operations and the roadway is a mess.
In addition to the cleanup crew, we need other folks willing to support
the crew primarily with a beer-food event at the end of the day.
After everyone stops chuckling, the real trick of this event is to
gather enough warm bodies on a particular day to walk along the roadside
and get the job done. So the challenge is setting the first date and
gathering the bodies.
What does the collective feel like? Early afternoon during the week or
week-end? We could split it up in sections but the county would
appreciate it if we did it in one shot. Once we fill up the bags, we
give them a call and they arrange for bag collection!
So if you are just sitting around with nothing to do or are completely
out of homebrew, add your name to the list, suggest a date, and get
involved. I have a good supply of bright vests (required), garbage
bags. There will be a short "safety program/meeting" before we start.
I think we would be best to split up the group in pairs but we could
also work together in mass.
So there you go. The sign goes up next week so get ready to "PICK UP
SOME CRAP."
Don't be shy; simply reply!

EVERYONE is welcome - we will pair novice judges with more experienced judges. You will get retro-credit for your judging once you take the BJCP test. If you're too shy to judge, you can "Steward", which involves helping the judges.

PEDALPUB is going to be in the Minnesota State Fair Parade on Saturday, August 25, 2007. Come out and support Minnesota homebrewing.
KSTP-TV, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS will be filming the first round judging and the awards ceremony. They are also interested in interviewing some brewers. KTSP would like a (very short) beermaking demo at their site on the Fairgrounds for 6 o'clock newscast. If anyone is interested, please inquiry. (I think we could re-use the wort from the earlier demo.)
Please pass this along to our homebrew friends!!
I've tried to pass this to other MN clubs if anyone belongs to another list(s) and doesn't see this post, please cross-post. 2007 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition Organizer
A trivial message but important to folks driving along Shady Oak Road
between Excelsior and Minnetonka and also important to our homebrew
club.
In the near future, our homebrew club will have the opportunity to
assist our community with liter control. In our honor, Hennepin County
will erect a sign of thanks. Obviously, they wanted to know what to
paint.
The sign votes were cast. Although it was not unanimous, a very strong
majority of the respondents requested version "B" is in addition to the
clean up message, the sign will include the following:
Minnesota Home
Brewers Association
Thanks for all of your verbal support and thank you in advance for the
physical support for this program. To further encourage your
participation, MHBA will offer free beer and good food following each
pickup event. We don't want anyone going away thirsty or hungry.
In addition to all of the clean up volunteers who signed up
electronically and at Granite City, we will need some beverage and food
coordinators. It isn't too technical but you need to be comfortable
with a BBQ or have access to good beer. Don't be shy, give it a try.
Additional details forthcoming.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel
MHBA
