Club members and potential trash collectors,
Today, my contact at Hennepin County stated they erected new signage
proclaiming the Minnesota Home Brewers Association proudly adopted Shady
Oak Road between Minnetonka Boulevard and Excelsior Boulevard. We did
mention that adoption has responsibilities right?
Yours truly signed a contract with Hennepin County stating that our club
will keep this two mile stretch of road reasonably clean for the next
two years. Based on your positive responses, this should work out
nicely and is a good community volunteer effort. The first clean up
date is set for September 15th and the clean up begins at 10:00 am.
Fine print:
Orientation: Before we begin picking up, we need a short orientation.
Yes, I know you know how to pick up stuff but we do need to plan the
event, do it safely, and keep parked cars along the roadside to a bare
minimum. Also, we need to exchange phone numbers so if first aid or
other assistance is needed, it will be a phone call away. Let's begin
the day at about 9:30 with some home roasted black coffee at:
Paul Dienhart place
2344 Nottingham Ct.
Minnetonka, MN 55305
Things to bring: Boots or strong shoes, gloves, nail-on-a-stick,
sunglasses, cap, sunscreen, water jug, bug juice, cell phone, etc.
Please, no banners or signs along the roadway.
After work (fun stuff): You were concerned we hadn't considered this?
Since many of you will leave your cars at Paul's place, it is logical to
return and get them. It seems highly logical to provide the workers
with some sort of stronger refreshments and good food since this
undertaking is hard work. Paul has also volunteered to remain behind
and cook up some wonders on his new BBQ. Rumor has it that a secret dry
rub previously used at a St. Paul church will be used on pork ribs and
maybe a chicken or two will get tossed in for good measures. We will
have good food and beverages for all volunteers.
So there you have it. See you September 15, 9:30 am at Paul's place.
Please pass this message on to other homebrewers you believe may be
interested in participating.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

Michael Jackson - The Beer Hunter - 1942-2007
Dang. We lost a good one.
August 30, 2007 - It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Michael Jackson, the Beer Hunter, who died this morning at his home in London, UK.
Jackson dedicated more than three decades to the pursuit and documentation of the world.s finest beers, and wrote many books on the subject.
He became known as the most widely-published and influential author on beer. He developed a cult television series known as 'The Beer Hunter', and contributed articles to countless magazines and newspapers. Jackson was especially well-known for his particular passion for the specialty brews of Belgium, and his bestseller The Great Beers of Belgium.
An occasional acquaintance of the Minnesota Homebrewers, many of us had the chance to hang out with "The Beer King". There's a nice online memorial at All About Beer.
Jim
Jim,
That hurt. Truly a huge loss to the global beer community, as he was one of the threads that brought it all together. He will be missed.
Thanks for passing on the info, Jim. I appreciate it.
Andrew

Hello everyone,
I know this (very) short notice and I apologize but I (really) need a brewing volunteer for Saturday, August 25 at the State Fair Grounds. Time, usually from 10am to 2pm. Typically, we do a sweet brewing demo as well as handing out MHBA brochures, homebrew catalogues and talk to thousands of people about brewing. The brewing entices people to come to us and show thm how easy homebrewing is. Meanwhile, in the background is the hustle and bustle of State Fair and our BOS event. This is a very large media event for homebrewing and awesome publicity for all of us and the hobby.
I need somebrewingbuddy to do portable brewing demonstration. You need your pot, chiller, paddle, propane, a wagon to haul it, etc. The minimum equipment to do an extract brew on the State Fair site. I say "minimum" becuase you to have to haul in and out. Also, KTSP asked US to brew at their State Fair site. We would be brewing at 5:30 to 6:30 at their site. If someone could volunteer that would be extremely helpful and have my eternal gratitude.
Thanks in advance,
Sean Hewitt
