Subject: In support of Minnesota Bill SF 143
Dear Steve and Jim,
My wife and I have been St. Louis Park residents for the past four years.
I am writing to offer my support for Minnesota Senate Bill SF 143, which
would allow off-sale "growlers" of beer from our fine Minnesota brewpubs.
We like to travel extensively, and in most other states where we travel, we
are able to purchase sealed, off-sale containers of beer brewed by the
brewpubs which we frequent. I think it would be a boon to tourism and a
benefit to residents for Minnesotans who enjoy craft beer.
Please vote YES on SF 143!
Thanks!

Why don't you just sanitize with boiling wort prior to connecting
cooling water?

Hi,
My technical question of the day:
Are there any problems with using Star San with brass
fittings? My Mash and boiling vessels have brass
faucets, just curious if I should be concerned about
filling these with star san to sanitize my pump and
Counterflow chiller (Stainless Steel).
Cheers

according to the web site (www.fivestarchemicals.com)
It is not recommended to use STAR SAN on soft metals because of the acid
nature of this product.
But they also state in their literature It cleans copper.
With careful use (2 minute contact time) it should be safe, but be sure the
system drains complete.

I found this help for tracking down which district you are in (if
you are like me and didn't know). It also provides email address for
your representatives and senators:

and here is what I blathered on about in the emails I sent (see below).
good luck to this bill,
Don
Alice,
I don't know much about where this bill is, when it would become
an act, or when you would see it. But I wanted to take a minute to say
that I have been waiting for legislation like this to pass for a number
of years now.
I'm a beer advocate. I love finely crafted, locally made beer.
When I travel around the country I always check out the locally made beer
that I can not get back in MN. There are many people who do the same
thing when coming to MN and we are thought to have a fairly respectable
brewing community. However, the inability of our brewpubs to be able to
sell beer to be carried offsite I feel has always been a black mark
against us.
Many of the states I travel to allow their brewpubs to sell
growlers and even bottle their beer. That beer can then travel and be
brought to a friend who would otherwise not be able to try that beer.
That friend then has a higher opinion of the St. Paul/Mpls community just
based on the kind of beer they produce, and might eventually stop by and
put some $ into our economy. It's a romantic tale I suppose, but I have
warm fuzzy feelings about Salt Lake City, Utah as well as Portland and
Bend, Oregon for some of these same reasons. And as far as local $ being
spent, if I am at a local brewpub and they have a great seasonal ale on
tap, I would be inclined to buy a growler of it to take home and enjoy
over the next couple days. This is not legally allowed as of yet.
At any rate, if this bill or act ever crosses your desk or
requires your vote, please support it.
thank you,
Don Osborn

Greetings All:
We currently have a bill down at the capital that would allow brewpubs to
sell growlers. The text of the bill can be viewed at
http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/cgi-bin/getbill.pl?number=SF0143&sessi
on=ls83&version=latest&session_number=0&session_year=2003
The bill number in the Senate is SF 143.
The bill will be heard next week in the Liquor Subcommittee. It is
imperative that everyone contact their Senators this week telling them
you support the bill. Write them an email or simply call on the phone.
We especially need help contacting the following Senators--please, if you
are in their district, spend 2 minutes to tell them you support Minnesota
breweries.
David Gaither, Plymouth, District 43
Steve Kelley, Hopkins, District 44
Sheila Kiscaden, Rochester, District 30
James Metzen, South St Paul, District 39
Linda Scheid, Brooklyn Park, District 46
Mady Reiter, Shoreview, District 53
The last member of the Liquor subcommittee is Sandy Pappas, and she is
carrying the bill for us. We need 4 votes on Friday. You can help us
get them. Call or email today.
Cheers!
