Thanks for the suggestions to my simple question. I knew I'd get a good
response.
Three Floyd's Alpha and Victory Hop Devil were my first thoughts, but both
were brought in by All Saints which evidently went out of business. What a
few weeks ago would have a been a simple matter of running to one of several
stores is now impossible.
My sister lives in LA(within 40 miles of Stone in San Marcos-I recommend
showing up on Saturday mornings for the growler fill and tasting). I've got
a bottle of Ruination IPA instead of the Arrogant Bastard, and Old Guardian
Barleywine. I'll send both if I can, or just the IPA. Not sure if I have
room in my bag to bring back the AB--probably just drink it at her house.:)
I bought a Bell's try again and will try Goose Island IPA, the Rogue Brutal
Bitter, and St. Croix before deciding what to send.
Thanks to Rick and Cris for the detailed packaging directions.
Thanks,
Cal
Here are the email addresses of the Commerce committee members. Let's get
on our emailers and let them know that we want our growlers! Tell them to
vote YES on SF 143!

Michael Jackson to speak at AHA Conference
We want the 25th AHA Conference to be the biggest and most memorable to
date so we went out and got the biggest name in the beer industry. Michael
Jackson, the Bard of Beer, will speak at this year's conference. He will
get the whole thing underway by giving the keynote address during lunch on
Thursday. If you've never seen Michael live, or even if you have, you are
in for a treat as Michael has tried more different beer styles than anyone
else in the world.
Michael is currently writing two new books but took a break to come visit
the most ardent homebrewers on the planet. Who knows, you may get the
chance for Michael to taste a sample of your prize homebrew. Many thanks to
the Goose Island Beer Company for making Michael's trip to Chicago
possible. His appearances in Chicago are infrequent so don't miss this one!
We have many other great speakers as well and are confirming more every
day. We'll send you details as they become known.
For online registration, visit
http://www.beertown.org/events/hbc/index.html.
All other conference information is at http://www.chibeer.org/aha03/.
Al here: THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF ROOM LEFT ON "THE BUS" TO THE CONFERENCE!
Email me if you are interested!
Sen. Bob Kierlin responded immediately and positively to my e-mail and phone
call last week. Below is his response, followed by my letter. I emphasized
the economic impact to the MN economy.
John:
You are correct. Our laws about the distribution of alcohol need updating. I
believe
this bill was up in the last two sessions, but didn't get any place. People
up
here are
often afraid of letting consumers decide things for themselves. Hopefully
the
bill will
make it this year.

BCC to:
To the Honorable Senator Kierlin:
I am a resident of Preston, MN, and an avid proponent of the Minnesota
Brewing industry. I am writing you today to ask for your support of Senate
File
#143, which I believe will be discussed on Friday, March 28th.
As you may know, 2002 was not a good year economically for the Minnesota
brewers. Part of the demise of both the Page brewery and the Minnesota
Brewing Company was due to economic forces beyond the control of the
government; however, a portion of the impetus to the closing of these two
historic employers (and of some Minnesota brewpubs) was due to archaic blue
laws
and a lack of common sense on the part of lawmakers of years gone by. We,
as a
state, will allow breweries from St. Louis and Milwaukee to infiltrate each
and
every corner of the malted-barley beverage market in this state, but we
refuse
to allow local brewers certain liberties that would assist them in their
market-share battles against out-of-state entities.
Many states (Wisconsin for one) allow their brewpubs to sell their wares in
the
form of a "growler," a handy off-premise container that allows a consumer to
purchase her or his favorite locally-crafted malt beverage for home
consumption.
Many MN brewpubs would be able to remain afloat financially if their regular
customers (and tourists) were able to take home growlers filled with the
local
brew. As more people discovered the well-made Minnesota beers, less
attention
would be paid to out-of-state products, and the Minnesota economy would
receive
a much-needed shot in the arm. These growlers are not any easier to to open
and
consume while driving than any currently-legal alcohol container, and thus
the
reasons against the use of growlers are difficult to understand.
I ask you to please support Senate File #143, in order that the Minnesota
brewing industry may continue to be a viable part of the economy, culture,
and
history of this state. Thank you for your time and for your consideration.
Sincerely,
John Longballa

Lowenbrau brewed in Munich has always had a certain following. Over a
decade ago, production was shifted to Miller's breweries in the U.S.
Though Miller steadfastly claimed to be using the same recipe and
ingredients, it just wasn't the same; it was weak. It was Miller-ized.
More recently, production was shifted to LaBatt in Canada. The bottles
said "Imported", but the fine print told the story, and LaBatt-brewed
Lowenbrau was not much different from Miller-brewed Lowenbrau. Sales
were never that good, because the product in the bottle was still weak.
Now, distribution of Munich-brewed Lowenbrau is back. I found some at a
local Jewell supermarket. The beer in the bottle, which is what really
matters, is the real thing. There is a clean malt crispness and a gentle
hop bite that is unmistakably genuine. Lowenbrau is definitely back.
They probably figured there was not much to lose. The Western-Hemisphere
brewed product was not selling, so why not try bringing it in from
Munich again. I note that LaBatt is the importer.

Hey beer Fans,
You drank all of the Tripel....Time for another beer release. Thursday, 4/03/31(this week) we will release "Single Malt", another variation of an English strong ale. This was a very simple beer to make, yet it is full of great flavor. One malt and one hop variety created this fine ale, both of English origin. Stop by the Minneapolis Townhall Brewery(1430 washington ave. s)this Thursday and try a pint for just $1.(Single Malt only) This beer has aged since January, so don't let the smooth character fool you...it packs a punch.
Hope to see you,
Mike

Just a quick note--we passed the bill through the Sen liquor subcommittee
last Friday with zero "no" votes. Next stop is the commerce committee.
Thanks to everyone who has contacted their Senators/Representatives.
It's good to know you have support when you're sitting on the hot seat at
the hearings.
