FLASH CARDS
I uploaded the LAST BJCP Flash Cards (whew!) to the Discussion Forum. For
some reason I am having some problems putting the files in the proper
folders, so the last three Flashcard files are in the root of the FILES
directory. If you don't find them there, that means I have figured out how
to move them to the proper folder, so look there.
LIGHT ALE NIGHT
Mark and Mike already sent out the call, but as a reminder if you have any
homebrewed or interesting commercial examples of Light Ales, Fruit, Spice,
Herb or Vegetable beers (BJCP Categories 3, 21, 22 and 24), please consider
bringing them along.
STUDY SESSION
Next Thursday (April 3) we will have a Study Session at Rick Oftel's house
for preparing for the BJCP exam. Bring some homebrew to share, bring your
questions, and be prepared to help each other out with answers. THIS IS AN
IMPORTANT CLASS if you're taking the exam, but please come even if you're
not taking the test. You WILL learn stuff, and your expertise is needed by
your classmates.
THE TEST:
The Test is set for April 12, 2003 at the University of Minnesota. We will
meet Kris England at Coffman Memorial Union at 8:45am SHARP, and parade to
the testing location. BE ON TIME! Kris has the keys, and if you get there
late, you will not be able to get in. The test will begin at 9am, and be
done by Noon. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN IN THE CLASSES AND ARE PLANNING ON
TAKING OR RETAKING THE TEST, PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP!
AHA CLUB-ONLY BROWN-ALE JUDGING IN FARGO
The Prairie Homebrewing Companions are conducting judging for the AHA
Club-Only Brown Ale competition in Fargo, ND (well, actually Harwood) the
day after the test, April 13. Please consider driving up for it! I am
leaving for Fargo shortly after the test gets out if anyone wants a ride.
I could fit 3-4 people in the Forester. Here's an email from Susan with
info and directions.

it a little later due to church. The judging is at my
house - Address is 5605 56th Ave. N. Harwood, ND

with brick on the front. I will let you know the

Thanks Erik! I've been to Winehaven, and I've tried their meads - very
nice indeed! I like them better than White Winter actually. I'll pass
along the news about Vintage Days and the campout to the MhBA.

Al,
Just to let you know, I saw that the Winehaven Winery in Chisago City is
having a Vintage Days celebration. They are introducing new wines and will
give tours and show how winemaking is done. They said that they will be
having a Icewine that is a german tradition. I tried some in germany and
it is great, it is a sweet dessert wine. You might want to think about
going there that weekend of April 3 - 6. I will be going on the 5th to get
some honey. I wanted orange blossom but their supply is out until May so I
will be getting wildflower. I have never done a wildflower before. They
also have two very good meads you can try and purchase. Their website is
http://www.winehaven.com
I thought you might be interested.\
Erik Nelson
ps Bruce will be reserving the campground next week. They don't take
reservations until April 1 and he will let you know on the exact weekend
for the campout, but he is thinking of the 3rd or 4th weekend of July, but
we will know next week

I'm sure you'll get tons of these. Mine is pretty standard (based on Rick
Larson's), but tried and true.
For five gal:
50% pilsner malt
50% wheat (I use 25% malted wheat/25% flaked wheat hoping it will give me
some
of that raw wheat character)
noble-type hops to about 17-19 IBU using Tinseth formula - all 60 min. boil
1/2 oz coriander coarsely ground 10 min. boil
.25-.5 oz bitter orange peel 10 min. boil
1/2 oz. coriander in secondary (optional-I really like coriander)
wit yeast
OG: 1.048
I don't bother with oats, because I can't tell the difference, but there's
traditionally 5% substituted for some wheat. I've also tries using raw
wheat
and it was a huge pain in the ass to find it, gelatinize it, etc. The
White
Labs version of the wit yeast is kind of finnicky about temperature. My
first
brew in my new house was a wit, and I didn't even pay attention to the
temperature in my basement. The fermentation got stock half done, so I
brought
it upstairs, and it finished up fine. The temperature was only 2-3 deg.
lower
than the bottom of the suggested range. This is really good fresh. I
usually
start drinking mine within two weeks.

It's Good To Be Royalty! Will you be crowned Homebrewer
of the Year this year? Not if you don't enter the AHA's 25th
Annual National Homebrew Competition this April. Show us
what you've got against more than 3000 of the best homebrews
from around the globe!
Are you in a homebrew club? Club members earn points
towards the Homebrew Club of the Year with every ribbon
and medal they take in the AHA National Homebrew Competition.
Just think how great it will feel when you and your fellow club
members are standing at the podium to accept the Homebrew
Club of the Year trophy this year. The competition has been
fierce the last few years. Now is your chance to show the rest
of the homebrewing world just what your club is made of!
April 9-18 is the entry deadline for the First Round of the
AHA National Homebrew Competition, so get ready to send in
those entries! AHA members receive a $4 discount off the
fees for each entry.
Last year we had 3,074 entries, once again making the AHA's
NHC by far the world's largest and most prestigious homebrew
competition! We expect even more entries this year. Due to
the growing number of entries, we've added a new "East" region
based in Cleveland, OH, bringing the total number of regional
competitions to nine.
Judging will be held April 25-27, May 2-4.
See http://www.beertown.org/events/nhc/index.html for details,
entry forms, site map, etc.
We Need Judges and Stewards! If you are interested in
judging, contact the judge coordinators listed at
http://www.beertown.org/events/nhc/judging.html. This
competition is AHA Sanctioned and BJCP registered, so all
judges and stewards earn BJCP points for participating.
For entries advancing to the Second Round of the competition,
judging and awards ceremony will take place at the AHA
National Homebrewers Conference in Chicago, June 19-21,
2003. For details on the conference, see
http://www.beertown.org/events/hbc/index.html. The AHA
NHC's Ninkasi Award winner (for the winningest brewer in the
Second Round of the competition) will be taking home a
stainless steel conical fermenter, compliments of Beer, Beer,
& More Beer.
Also don't forget to vote in the AHA Board of Advisors
election! Ballots will be accepted from AHA members through
Tuesday, April 1. We have an excellent line up of candidates
this year. By voting you can earn an additional entry into the
AHA's Lallemand Scholarship drawing, see below for more
on the contest. Go to
http://www.beertown.org/homebrewing/election.html to vote
online, or send in the ballot found on page 13 of the March/April
2003 Zymurgy.
Once again, Lallemand, makers of Danstar yeast, is offering
one lucky AHA member a full-paid scholarship to attend the
Siebel Institute of Technology's Concise Course in Brewing
Technology. See
http://www.beertown.org/homebrewing/scholarship.html for
contest details.
