Thanks members for all the responses. We now have volunteers to inquire at Midwest and at Northern Brewer and also have a possible assistant brewer for a day position.
Remember, we anticipate having new club glasses at the party. These are really fancy Nonics with a single color MHBA logo below the bulge. Everything is on track and production starts next week. Paid members will receive a commerative glass and additional glasses will be offered for sale.
New (and much improved) membership cards will also be distributed at the meeting. Gloria is working on these so see her in Dember for details or for your card.
Happy collecting.

Hello? Is anyone listening? I received one response for help and asked for 10.
I need 9 more folks willing to promote the extravaganza, invite folks to the Christmas party, and finally try to get stuff.
As usual, we will showcase or sincerely thank any participant or company that provides door prize or major gifts. The challenge is getting a few of you guys and gals to participate - more than open and delete e-mails.
So if you like door prizes, you need to go our and ask for them. Of course, we always have the fall back on the wonderful food and beer.
Let me know (soon ok) where you would be willing to inquire at.
Rick O
Congrats Kerry, on the whole deal! We will certainly miss you here, so
your news is eSPECIAL' BITTER on our part. And we'll try not to, when we
drink our BARLEY, WHINE about your departure. We'll try to be STOUT, and
carry on. I MAI BOCK about your moving to the East Coast, (some of us
think New York is what HELLES like, especially when our own weather here
is so MILD), but at least you'll still be able to get some good baseball
out there. They ain't the Twins, but the Yankees are still capable of
getting off a good DUBBEL (or maybe even a TRIPEL) play now and again.
Well, enough of this foolishness, even though we may like to BRAGGOT how
much better the beer is here than in New York. I don't want to PERR WITS
with you any more. Anytime you're back in town, call me up and we'll go
for a beer, no matter what the SAISON!
Best of luck!

Greeting from Kerry K (aka Lebowski). Rick, you
inspired me to announce some news that I have been
holding tight to.
Kerry and Molly (including Space Ghost, and Jacoby)
are packing up and moving East to NY (or NJ?) at the
end of the month. Molly is pulling up her TC roots to
adventure to the big Apple to get her career rolling,
and Kerry is leaving his biotech tendencies to join
the corporate world at Wyeth in Pearl River, NY.
Fermentation will be a big part of Kerry's day-day
efforts to produce small molecules of interest
(probably highly toxic!) from terrestrial and marine
microorganisms. He plans to find time to continue the
kitchen variety (somewhat toxic at large doses)
fermentation work too!!
Details are still fuzzy (NOT due to toxiciy), but we
are also fermenting a "small-batch marriage ceremony"
in the next week or 2! Apparently the crossroads of
moving, new careers, K2's 40th birthday last week have
attenuated to give a somewhat sweet, though
well-balanced, clear, and refreshing life direction.
Thanks for great beers and memories everyone!!!
The dude abides!

Greetings from the MHBA. Rick here with yet another noon time announcement produced with extra words to mask the limited content. Some humor may be hidden within.
Now that I have your attention, the Christmas Extravaganza in early December needs your help and commitments. You may recall I mentioned something about donations - well here is the request. The club needs about 10 good volunteers to inquire at homebrew shops and microbreweries about free stuff that would be willing to donate to the MHBA Christmas Fund. We have a bunch of stuff from last winter but am not sure of the quantity. Every member has at least one door prize in his kitchen or brewery! Donate glasses you are tired of, a special garage sale find, something partially used, you get the picture right?
If willing to donate some time and expertise, let me know. If no one volunteers, we will just have to get on with business as usual. One individual per establishment in a caring and polite manner so we appear organized.
Try to request things that don't cost money but have value. Assistant brewer for a day certificates are exceptional and were very well received. Even to dig out a mash tun of spent grain is worthy of a vacation day! I can think of about 5 or 6 places that may volunteer one or more certificates.
Glasses, anything stainless steel, books, magazines, etc. You choose but with let me know first so we can keep organized.
If no one volunteers, we will only have about 50 door prizes, wonderful Christmas cheer, pot luck meal from the kitchen of eclectic cooks, beverages from around the world, Rick's Triple R Ribs, and a free club glass to every paid member.
Did you catch that last line folks? It's going to be tight but we believe we can deliver in time for Christmas. All paid members (we know where you live) will receive a club glass. These are fancy 10 ounce Nonic glasses with the bulge to prevent you from dropping them. We had considered smaller sample glasses but found a decent price on a much nicer glass that we think you will like. The MHBA logo will be below the bulge in a silver gray single color made to duplicate acid etch. We tried to include the "--full pint-- but they can not print above the bulge.
The other thing about the club glasses is quantity. You can buy them and give them away as gifts. Buy a complete set of 12. Send them to friends in far away places. Stocking stuffers. Does anyone get the feeling there will be an adequate quantity for a while? Does 24 dozen sound adequate? We could up the order if necessary?
So there you have it club members. Hope this noon wisdom catches you with warm feelings for the wonderful afternoon and it inspires you to volunteer your expertise to go out and beg - in the name of the MHBA.
Thanks in advance
Rick O
PS. We have a few other contests lined up that will be similar to previous years. These include peoples choice award, best beverage award, best food award, best dessert award, and a special award that will be announced the day of the festivity.
See you all in December.
>From the forming member of the MHBA Jeff Donahue, here is a much better explanation of Nonic.
Greetings from Brewery Creek
My understanding is that the bulge on the "nonic" glass is to prevent the glasses from clinking together on the shelf, or wherever they are stored, or hastily grabbed by a bar wench from a pub table, etc, thus preventing "nicks" in the drinking edge. "No nick" became nonic. (some guy naked "Nick" probably threatened a law suit)

WHAT`S NEW
TOAST TO JIMMY: "On October 14, 1978, President Carter signed House
Resolution 1337. Senate Amendment 3534 to that resolution called for
equal treatment of home beer brewers and home winemakers. This law
allowed that brewing up to 100 gallons per adult or up to 200 gallons
per household per year was permitted for home use. The amendment was
proposed by Senator Cranston of California, Senator Schmitt of New
Mexico, Senator Bumpers of Arkansas and Senator Gravel of Alaska."

National Mead Day: National Mead Day was celebrated with vim and
vigor in St. Paul, MN this past Saturday as some 23 people gathered
to sample 37 meads. Commercial meads included the likes of Xtabentum
(Licor de Anis y Miel de Abejas), Brother Adam\'s Bragget Ale,
Lindisfarne and Moniack (Dark) - to name just a few. The most
striking aspect was the quality of the home made meads. Thanks to
everyone who participated and a special thanks to those who brought
libations and food. Equally aMAZEing is that five mead makers made
six batches of mead: two batches of the official mead day recipe,
cherry melomel, and batches of cranberry blossom, raspberry ginger,
wildflower, and mint blossom. In all, 32 gallons of mead were made.
Mead making technique ran the gamut from pasteurization to the use of
sulfites to no sanitation of ingredients. Some 1.6 trillion yeasts
"pitched in" to make it happen. Check out the pictures[1]!!!

All, The best thing about the homebrew club is you guys keep me honest.
The date and day for the 2003 Minnesota Homebrewers Association Extravaganza
and pot luck party are Friday, December 12, 2003.......
On a sad note, I will not be able to attend the first portion of the club
meeting tomorrow since Dawn and I need to attend a funeral. Hopefully
someone (hint) will get this message Saturday and bring it to and read it at
the meeting.
Club glasses are in the works. We are getting slightly less than 300
glasses. The style is a 10 oz nonic or bulge style English Pub glass with a
peusdo etch gray glazed MHBA logo in single color. The logo was modified
slightly to be a true B&W image and it looks pretty impressive. We hope to
have these glasses in hand for the Christmas Extravaganza although it will
be close. New members need to contact a club officer to arrange for your
complimentary club membership glass. Extra glasses (all 290 of them) are on
sale at $3.50 each or three for $10.00.
Paul needs to take a bow for getting together the club whiskey barrel
experiment. With a little coaching and influence, Paul took on the task of
acquiring a freshly drained whiskey barrel and providing the space to store
it for about 9 months. Eleven club members took the challenge to brew
identical recipe barley wines with OG of 1.10? Folks, let me tell you,
these are big beers. Anyhow, beer is brewed and anxiously waiting to go to
sleep. The barrel is yearning for contents. And the Royal Order of the
Bourbon Barrel is anxious to start filling this container. All we need to
do now is to meet at Paul's on November 15, sample 11 wee heavy Barley
Wines. Agree on the additions and pay our outrageous storage charge. The
last I heard, it was close to or possibly over 13 dollars!!!
Stay tuned for updates and emergencies. Does anyone in the crowd remember
the great porter flood that occurred in a London suburb. Fortunately, Pauls
lives adjacent to a low area. It is likely a rupture of this barrel would
cause a mess but wouldn't cause a flood.

Hello Folks,
I feel the need to share something that is going on in Michigan right now.
As a result of a complaint to the MLCC, brewpubs, micros and retailers are
being investigated.
Not all, at least not yet, have been contacted/visited. But at least one of
each of these business has and word to the wise is that it will continue.
Please note, that regardless of what arrangement you may have had in the
past, there are certain things going on in our state that while common and to us
no big deal, are in fact illegal.
For example;
Beer tastings featuring other breweries and or brewpubs.
Alcohol tastings to the public where one price gets many samples
Any event where alcohol walks in the door, even if by a retailer or
distributor
Any alcohol was not bought from a distributor who serves the designated area.
Any homebrew opened for any reason in a licensed establishment
This has affected the following events already:
Style appreciation nights
Polar Beer Festival
Merchants Scotch Tasting
Over the Mill
This will also affect any homebrew club meeting at any brewery or licensed
establishment where homebrew is tasted.
Please recall that for MIY2K, we got a variance from the MLCC. At Rochester
Mills, we got MLCC permission to hold the competition by agreeing to hold
judging off the licensed premise - as in downstairs in the basement offices -
which
are now no longer available to us.
This pretty much means that any competition or tasting must be held at a
non-licensed venue.
I think we all need to get together and work on another legislative change.
Cheers!

----- End forwarded message -----
Greetings homebrewers and beer fans. Rick here with a few important club
announcements about future meetings and stuff. First, let's think about
hops. Sure, you all know those wonderful green plants that go into wort and
produce bitter flavor, unique taste, and wonderful aroma. This is a
different kind of hops- It is a restaurant and microbrewery and Saturday is
our next scheduled club meeting.
Although I could be wrong (been there before) the meeting starts in the
early afternoon and concludes around 5 or so. Bob (we hope) will be on hand
and if not, we own the brewery!
Ok, got a little carried away - sorry. Anyhow, this is our traditional
November meeting that we have enjoyed for the last 3 (maybe 4?) years
outside on the patio at Water Tower. The good news is the weather is much
colder this year so we have to stay inside. Besides, Hops doesn't have a
patio ......yet.
So next Saturday, go to the Eden Prairie hops, meet brewers, comrades, beer
and all of that wonderful beer stuff. A few points of order will occur
regarding upcoming events at the Christmas Extravaganza, Club glasses, club
elections, new members, brew-a-rama, fill-er-up-o-rama, and hops.
I still have a few........er..........pounds of Willamette hops taking up
space in the home freezer. If anyone is interested, send a message to this
url and I will bag some up and bring them along. These are wonderfully
fresh hops taken from a sliced bale imported from Oregon. Good stuff.
The bourbon barrel brewers are getting together for a fill-up festival
November 15. Talk to Paul at the meeting for more details. You've gotta
see the barrel rack. It belongs to the club.
Christmas Christmas Christmas. Remember the Christmas extravaganza that
always occurs at the CSPS hall on a Friday in December? Guess what? It's
going to happen again. December 15 @ 6:00 is the annual Holiday
Extravaganza and Pot Luck at the CSPS hall in St Paul. If you are a new
member and haven't attended yet, this is the premier event of the year.
You've gotta go. This event is open to all MHBA club members and family and
here is how it works.
You bring something to share and bring more than you can comfortably eat.
You ask for donations and bring stuff to give away. Every one gets a number
and we draw for door prizes during the evening. You do need to be there to
win but who's going to leave early? Why?
Usually, we have more than ample quantities of food, munchies, main dishes,
salads, specialty shrimp, ribs, beans, bread, beef, pork, turkey, fish, and
all of that wonderful stuff. Did we mention beer? The club tapper is
slated to make an appearance this year so we need volunteers to bring tanks
to connect. They don't need to be full but the beer best be decent. Bad
beer belongs somewhere else (share with neighbors).
I sort of got carried away - sorry. Let's review.
Saturday, early afternoon go to Hops in Eden Prairie. General club
business meeting. Mark Gleve (sp) Cider distribution. Strategy and ideas
for February elections. New members welcome - Membership cards available.
See you next Saturday or be square or have a beer. Did we mention that beer
will be available?
Closing question. How many MHBA events have you attended that ran out of
beer?
Answer - come to the meeting to find out.
