Wayne,
As far as my comments about Bandana Brewery go, gave it my honest review
as far as the environment goes. I personally do not enjoy listening to
someone howl out the words to a song, particularly new country songs, at
the top of their lungs while I'm trying to enjoy dinner with my
friends. What really baffled us is why they would have have Karaoke on
a Saturday night...
I support brewpubs wherever I can, Town Hall and Barley John's
especially -- I enjoy those places for the environment and the beer. If
they played a type of music I didn't enjoy or it was too loud or the
building was too cold or too hot or in any case, if I found the
environment unappealing, I think I should say so. I understand the beer
isn't ready, and yes, the beer makes about 45% of my overall judgment
[they were serving American Lager] with 25% going to food and 30% to
overall atmosphere.
I understand that Bob, isn't on this mailing list, but I think the
content of my last email will reach him. I believe any business owner
would tell you that he'd rather have a customer say "I'm not going to
give you my patronage because <reason>" rather that never say anything
at all.
We told the hostess that we weren't sticking around because of the
Karaoke. We also asked if they were going to do Karaoke every Saturday
night. She indicated that she wasn't sure.
My friends and I are going to try Bandana Brewing again, we're coming
back when the beer's ready. The environment threw us for a loop being
used to Barley John's, Blue Bricks, and Town Hall.
I'm not writing the place off -- I'm just providing my two cents.

Subject: Winterfest
Hey all-
Been kind of quiet lately, getting ready to move down to Mankato. Exciting things are happening for February, though.
What better to fight the chill of winter than the Second Annual Winterfest? I'm really excited about this year's festival because of all the new members we have. With the addition of Summit, Schell's, Herkimer and Green Mill, there may be as many brewers as consumers at this year's event.
Tickets go on sale on December 15th, and may be purchased at Town Hall, Great Waters, or Hops in Eden Prairie. Tickets are $20, cash only (no credit cards or personal checks)
The event will be held Feb 8th 6-9PM at the Hamm Building once again. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Cheers!

Speaking of Bandana Brewery -- I went in there on Saturday night with a
group of about 6 of my friends that live in Mankato.
We were going to eat dinner and have a few drinks at Bandana, but nobody
wanted to stay because they were doing Country Music Karaoke. **COUNTRY
MUSIC KARAOKE** It also didn't help that the in-house brew wasn't going
to be done for another couple weeks.
So we ate at Grizzly's and then drank at Busters, three blocks away from
Bandana [where I was stuck consuming Gin & Tonics, due to the poor beer
selection.]
I'm not sure what type of crowd Bandana is attempting to appeal to, but
it's definitely not the young, college crowd. Which is terribly
disappointing because since I started home brewing [ a year and a half
ago ], I've turned at least two dozen college-aged students in the
Mankato area to enjoying the taste of beer, and not so much the
quantity.
Perhaps, the brutal country music karaoke may only offend a fraction of
Mankato populous, but it's the fraction I associate with.

Remember the Brew-A-Rama?

Ok, I know what you're thinking. How in the heck can I make it to a
brew date if the notice comes out the day before? OK then. Here you
go.
On January 11 (before the Summit meeting) the Garden View Brewery will
be brewing up a batch of barley wine. We will attempt to produce 12
gallons of 1.100 biter wort and it will be fermented (in honor of Dave
Berg) with Ringwood Yeast. No, it isn't Dave's culture but it does have
the same name. I can't tell you if it is the single or the dual culture
but thanks to Dave, we are using his exact recipe.
So there you have it. Advanced warning, afternoon meeting, and some old
samples.
Would you show up if I offered new members one of our remaining club
glasses?
Always think about carrots!
Rick O
Greetings Homebrewers, Take me to your Liter?
Rick here with a short message to the members, guests, cooks, brewers,
and helpers that made the 2002 Pot Luck party such a great event!
Words can not adequately describe the awesome table of food that you
provided for the members. A slightly more accurate description would be
60 feet of food and 15 feet of deserts!!! WOW!!
I still have memories of that coconut sauce, 6 or more chilies, vegies,
meat, sausage, kraut, and all of those crock pots. I wonder what the
size is of their circuit breaker? Let us not forget the other end of
the table with those wonderful chocolate truffles, cakes, cookies, more
chocolate. Did I mention that I'm a chocolate fan?
So the last official meeting of 2002 will bring us into 2003. I
mentioned at our last meeting that our club is owned by it's members and
we have a purpose, function and responsibility. Please take a few
moments during the holiday season to consider your contributions to the
club. Following are a few hints.
Contributions: The club doesn't have major expenses but we do spend
money on our web site, CSPS hall, and we have been talking (without
actions) for quite some time about getting new club glasses. Please
ensure your dues are current.
Contributions of content: Every last member knows something worth
sharing with the group. This kind if information makes for interesting
reading on the net and also provides topics and subjects and text to use
in the news letter. We appreciate your contributions but have a hard
time thanking you if no one says anything!
Contributions at meetings: Tips and tricks, bad habits, problems,
wonderful recipes, bad yeast, weird flavors, bad headache, ............
You all have interesting experiences worth sharing and are in a group
of caring brewers. Plan ahead on talking about a subject at a future
meeting.
Purpose: I would like to get back to featuring a technical topic at
each meeting. Subjects should start at the beginning level and can
advance to the advanced level. Regular technical tips will add a real
purpose to the club, provide beginning brewers with more challenges, and
create contributions for future publications!
Function: As 2003 begins, we are looking toward our membership for more
assistance. Assistance will be required to help with meetings, discuss
topics, record events and generally gain confidence with our growing
group of brewing experts.
Charter: The founding members of the MHBA had a simple charter. You
hold office for 2 years maximum. This way, the group always changed,
allowed new members to come forward and allowed older members (like me -
I guess) to help from the sidelines. I would like to return to this
charter and obviously, it takes volunteers.
The only difference between a thought and an idea is the action of
communication. This is similar to the difference between a member and
an active member. We are relying on you to become more actively
involved with your club. I would appreciate your thoughts and ideas via
any communications method except for mental telepathy!
Have a wonderful holiday season and an advanced welcome to 2003. Hope
to see you next meeting at Summit!
Sincerely
Rick Oftel

What I cant understand is why Sherlocks is closing?

I go there the bar is pretty packed.
Maybe it was the restaurant part? I know everyone loves their fish and
chips.
I for one am going to sorely miss Sherlocks :(

What's this about the brewing operation at Sherlock's closing down? I
must have missed it. Can anyone fill me in or send a link to a story?
What about the restaurant?

Hey, my neighboring suburb was starting to seem like the micro-brewing
mecca of Minnesota. I truly was enjoying the diversity of the three
very close but completely unique breweries/restaurants.
There is likely a lesson to be learned here regarding total customer
satisfaction, corporate decision making, and a bit of individual greed
but it is beyond the scope of my knowledge.
I also strongly prefer Minnesota Beer and it is exactly why I order
local beer and brew at home.

P.S. I am in the market for a very small single phase pump.

I just had dinner there and asked what the reason was - and all I heard was
"Bill has lots of reasons." No clarification. It seems to be a sore point.
Shame. The winter warmer was still available. The food was still great.
I am depressed.
