I don't understand why he doesn't just turn Sherlock's
into a Granite City if that is his aim. There is a
built in customer base and a brewer.

That is exactly the reason that we started the festivals. Getting an
owner to spend money on advertising is like pulling teeth, and even if
you do take out an ad, it is impossible to determine if it was cost
effective. The Guild took money in the form of dues, and used that to
market all the places. It seems to be helping a bit.
>There should be more of this.
Yes and no. You don't want to overload on festivals, and you need to
make sure you are always putting your best foot forward. It's a lot of
work to organize the ABR, and those of us who organize it already have
full-time jobs. We start planning in January for next year.
Hopefully the Food and Wine show will also be beneficial for our members.
Believe me, the pavillion was not cheap. But, that's why we formed the
Guild--to spend money on promotions.

I hope you mean Great Waters instead of WT. Speaking of Winterfest, the
tickets are flying out the door. I'd say more than half are sold
already.

The Minnesota Home Brewers Association will be selecting our club
representative for the National Club-Only English Bitters (BJCP Category 4)
competition in January 2003. We will make our selection at the Jan.9,2002
BJCP Class. If you have a Bitter that you would like us to consider, bring
it to the class on January 9, or get it to someone who will be at the class
on January 9. We need three bottles (1 for our club to select, and 2
bottles to go off to the competition). If your beer is not chosen, you can
get your other 2 bottles back.
If anyone is interested in helping judge, the Minnesota Timberworts are
hosting the competition on January 25, 2003. Contact Leo Vitt at
lvitt4(a)yahoo.com.
I've got a Strong Bitter - who else?

PS - The NEXT club-only competition is Brown Ales, being hosted by the
Prairie Homebrewing Companions in Fargo on April 12. We will select our
club's rep for that contest on March 20, 2003 at that night's BJCP class.
Anyone wanting to help judge this can contact Susan Ruud at
susan.ruud(a)ndsu.nodak.edu. Unfortunately for those in the BJCP class,
April 12 is the same day as our scheduled exam....
Looking a bit further out, the Club-Only Old-Ale competition is in May -
start brewing NOW for that one to let your ale get old!!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Association of Brewers connects with Slow Food USA
Boulder, Colo. 12.19.2002Association of Brewers (AOB) strengthened the
relationship with Slow Food USA's 8,000+ members with a letter to the
leaders of the 70+ conviviums around the country.
The letter from AOB president Charlie Papazian affirmed the mission and
philosophy of Slow Food; protection of biodiversity, the right to pleasure,
taste education, promotion of quality, promotion of a new model of
agriculture. He applauded Slow Food members for championing these ideals,
ideals Papazian feels many Association of Brewers/Institute for Brewing
Studies members share.
I thought it was important to point out that as Slow Food has cultivated an
appreciation for the culture of food and beverage the Association of Brewers
and its members have been nurturing an appreciation of brewing and beer
culture, comments Papazian.
For 25 years we have been participating, promoting and even producing
beer-related events that increase the publics awareness of beer culture and
how it relates to an appreciation of food. I think we are a perfect fit
because were the primary contact for the media when it comes to information
about beer and brewing in America. Our activities provide a means to spread
the word about beer and food culture.
Several Association of Brewers and Institute for Brewing Studies
craft/microbreweries members, individual homebrewers and beer enthusiasts
are Slow Food U.S.A. members and active supporters.
The Association of Brewers is a not-for-profit, educational organization
based in Boulder, Colo., U.S.A. devoted to making quality beer and brewing
knowledge accessible to all.
The Association of Brewers (AOB) has four divisions: American Homebrewers
Association (AHA), Institute for Brewing Studies (IBS), Brewing Matters and
Brewers Publications (BP). The AOB organizes the World Beer Cup®, Great
American Beer Festival®, Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America®,
National Homebrewers Conference, National Homebrew Competition and American
Beer Month.

Mike, Dave and the rest of the MPLS Metro beer consumers....
We are all sorry to see a business or two fall by the wayside. However,
whether we brew the stuff at home or count on a brewpub, microbrewery, or
God forbid a true large commercial brewery...it's that fact that we have a
choice to make that brings us all together.
I sit here pondering the last several emails, ducking and dodging the
criticisms, whether another brewpub, micro..or even a brew store kicks the
bucket. Why?? Because I love beer and well, I'm responsible for advising a
few investors who own thousands of shares of Summit Brewing stock.
Let's not consume ourselves with whether the local brewpubs have too many
cooks in the kitchen or whether they decide that country karaoke will drive
the sales. My hat is off to the organizers of the Autumn Brew Review and
Winterfest who are introducing the product to the community in what would
appear to be some good old fashion marketing. There should be more of this.
I'm not certain when they all began(I'm a transplant from Blue Bullet
land-Stevens Point, Wisconsin), but my word of mouth has driven a few more
attendees making a 225 mile journey to taste your product.
I think back to the free drink card I rec'd at the 2002 Winterfest and
although I did visit that Town Hall Brewing a time or two since...I never
redeemed the drink. I will and I will be back for more of the festivals in
the future. The question is whether I go to Water Tower,Town Hall or Hops
to buy the Winterfest tickets.
See you there!
