> Hello everyone! Spooky Brew is returning and we need some judging help. As such, I want to send this out to get on everyone's calendars and let them know that Spooky Brew is scheduled for Saturday October 25th. We have secured Goose Island's Wrigleyville Brewpub as our judging venue and we're expecting upwards of 400 entries. Let me know if you have any questions, registration for judges is open now and will be open for entries beginning 9/29! Cheers!

Mississippi River Distilling Company will have some 15 gallon rye
whiskey barrels available for purchase soon. We will be harvesting the
barrels within the next couple of months. The cost of the barrels is $125.
If there is enough "northern" interest, I can arrange a road trip to bring
them up.

Good Morning Brett Glenna,
My name is Jesse John Ward and I would like to ask if any of your club
members would be interested in some free hops. I've got cascade and
willamette plants in their fourth year. The hops are up on the bines and
I've got eight 17' x 3/8" ropes that are about ready for harvest. I'm in a
nursing program right now and just don't have the time to harvest them
myself.
I would be very happy to donate these hops to anyone that would like to
have them. I'm located in Corcoran just west of Maple Grove. If anyone is
willing to make the drive out I'll gladly cut the ropes down and give them
over.
Sincerely,
Jesse John Ward

Subject: Fresh wine grape juice buy
Some of you know that for a number of years I have coordinated a small group buy of fresh pressed California wine grape juice. The year BJ Haun (wjhaun(a)gmail.com) is coordinating the small group buy. Our portion is piggybacked on a larger buy that generally includes hundreds of buckets of juice for a large number of MN based wine makers. The juice can be used to make pretty good wines or even used to make pyments (grape mead). It is even very good grape juice for just drinking unfermented. The stuff arrives chilled but you need to be prepared to use it within a few days unless you can freeze it.
The juice comes to MN in 6 gallon buckets - white buckets similar to the fermenter buckets sold by the HB stores. The juice is transported from California to MN via a refrigerated truck and delivered to a cold warehouse in Eden Prairie.
You will have to prepay for the juice using PayPal and you will have to pick it up at the warehouse between 9:00 and 13:00 on Saturday October 4th unless you can make other arrangements with BJ. There are a number of varieties of red, white and blush juices available with prices ranging from about $49 to $60 per bucket depending the variety.
For the varieties and price list contact BJ directly at wjhaun(a)gmail.com

Subject: 2014 Big River Homebrew Competition
Dear fellow brewers, please pass this message along to your clubs and any other brewers who might be interested.
The Nordeast Brewers Alliance <http://NordeastBrewersAlliance.org> is proud to be hosting the 3rd annual Big River Homebrew Competition. Capped at 225 entries and AHA/BJCP certified, this competition is for beer only, no meads or ciders. In addition to all BJCP categories, we also have two additional style categories: 100% Brett and American Wild Ale. If there are sour or funky beers out there, this is the competition for them!
Registration <http://nordeasthbc.brewcompetition.com> is open until Sep 28th, entries are due at drop off locations the 28th as well.
$8 per entry. A portion of our proceeds will again be going to the East Side Neighborhood Services <http://esns.org> , a non-profit neighborhood assistance group in NE MPLS. Last year we were able to donate $375 and are hoping to increase that amount this year.
Judging will be Oct 11/12 at ESNS. We are welcoming volunteers for judges and stewards.
We will be announcing winners on Oct 18th at the Big River Brew Fest <http://www.esns.org/event-1728508> , and will have score sheets available for pickup at the fest as well. By the way, tickets for this amazing fest are only $25!
Register at nordeasthbc.brewcompetition.com to submit entries or sign up as a volunteer.
Cheers!

Steve's new book is now available. I can get you a signed copy directly
from Steve. Let me know if you want one for $26.77.
It's really a great looking book if you want to advance your mead making
skills or start to make mead.
Some stories suggest that mead was originally discovered when one of our
not-yet-upright forebears stuck their hand in a fermenting bee hive and came
away with a honeycomb containing a little more than they bargained for.
Whatever the truth, brewers have brought this beverage into the twenty-first
century, and you can rest assured that The Complete Guide to Making Mead is
a thoroughly up-to-date, modern, and authoritative guide to homemade mead.
Best of all, it has something for everyone, from the stone-cold beginner to
the seasoned veteran. Award-winning mead-maker Steve Piatz begins with a
brief history of the fermented beverage; a rundown of the various types of
mead; and a discussion of the many types of honey that are available, their
characteristics, and where to source them. Readers will be treated to
discussions of yeast and special ingredients, as well as what equipment is
necessary and recommended and an illustrated and detailed look at the basic
process. Readers will also discover advanced techniques, such as oaking,
clarifying, aging, spicing, and blending. There are even sections on
developing recipes and troubleshooting problems with the brewing process.
With more than 100 color photos, The Complete Guide to Making Mead includes
dozens of recipes for basic meads (honey only), melomels (honey and fruit),
metheglins (honey and spices), and braggots (honey and malt).
