FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Association of Brewers and Slow Food U.S.A. unite at the Salon del Gusto
Boulder, Colo. • 10.25.2002- Today the Association of Brewers, Slow Food
U.S.A. and more than 10 American craft breweries collaborate at the Taste
America part of the Salon del Gusto, the worldÂ’s largest international food
festival.
Salon del Gusto runs Oct. 24 through Oct. 28 in Torino, Italy. In 2000, the
first Salon del Gusto attracted more 130,000 people to taste the best
artisan foods from around the globe.
“The primary purpose of representing American craft beer at this event is to
improve the image of American craft beer internationally and nationally,”
said Charlie Papazian, the president of the Association of Brewers. “Our
intent is to represent the American craft brewing and beer industry to show
the world some of the best craft beer products.”
This yearÂ’s Taste America features taste seminars that focus on such topics
as chocolate, corn, wild Alaskan salmon and dinners that feature sustainable
seafood and locally grown produce of the Piedmant region of Italy.
The centerpiece of Taste America is the mercato or marketplace, where the
Association of Brewers and Slow Food U.S.A. share two booths sponsored by
the U.S. Embassy in Rome. These booths showcase more than 35 American craft
beer brands that will be featured at the festivalÂ’s workshops.
Papazian will be co-leading two workshops, featuring Alaskan wild Salmon and
Alaskan beer. The other workshop features American and Irish farmhouse
cheeses paired with American craft beer. Garrett Oliver, brewmaster of
Brooklyn Brewing Co., N.Y., U.S.A., will host an “extreme beers” workshop,
featuring several other American craft beers.
More than 15 individuals representing seven American craft breweries are
attending the Taste America. The breweries represented are: CH Evans
Brewing Co., N.Y.; Brooklyn Brewing Co., N.Y.; Left Hand/Tabernash Brewing
Co., Colo.; OdellÂ’s Brewing Co., Colo.; Flying Dog Ales, Colo.; Pelican Pub,
Ore.; Deschutes Brewing Co., Ore.; Alaskan Brewing Co., Alaska; Stone
Brewing Co., Calif.; Kona Brewing Co., Hawaii.
Slow Food, an Italian association founded in 1986 that seeks a rediscovery
of authentic culinary traditions and the conservation of the worldÂ’s quality
food and wine heritage, organizes the Salon del Gusto.
Slow Food U.S.A. is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to
supporting and celebrating the food traditions of North America.
The Association of Brewers is a not-for-profit, educational organization
based in Boulder, Colo., U.S.A. devoted to making quality beer and brewing
knowledge accessible to all.
The Association of Brewers (AOB) has four divisions: American Homebrewers
Association (AHA), Institute for Brewing Studies (IBS), Brewing Matters and
Brewers Publications (BP). The AOB organizes the World Beer Cup®, Great
American Beer Festival®, Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America®,
National Homebrewers Conference, National Homebrew Competition and American
Beer Month.

If anyone should be looking for something to do this weekend, don't forget about The Hoppy Halloween Challenge in Fargo. The choice option is to stay at the hotel where the hospitality suite is. There are rumored to be in excess of 2 local beer "personalities" at the BOS event on Sat. ;-) All the details at http://www.linkup.net/users/dtrautmann/phc2002.html
See you there!

I can't remember if I sent this out already or not,
but the next WestSide meeting will be at Sherlock's on
Wed 10/30 @ 7:00 pm. Damian has promised to dress like
a brewer in honor of All Hallows Eve ...
For those of you who don't know, I have been off
alcohol due to a Doctor's order. I got retested today,
so hopefully I will have fallen off of the wagon by
the next meeting (I find out the results tomorrow I
guess) ...
Assuming I have the OK to consume again, I guess I
will bring some of the now well aged Witbier that was
on its last legs before I jumped on the wagon ...
Cheers
WH

Thanks to Mark and Eric Glewwe for organizing and officiating at the MhBA
Cider Squeeze out at Webber Apple Orchards. All in attendance had a GREAT
time, tried some fine homebrewed ciders and beers, as well as some 5 y/o
Polish Mead, and walked away with our fill of fresh cider. Attendees
included: Mike and Sue Moranz, Betsy Kremser, Curt and ?? (sorry, I didn't
catch her name), Sean and Livinia, Mark and Eric Glewwe and myself, plus
whoever arrived later in the day....
Thanks again Mark!

This is typically on Thanksgiving Weekend, however this year U.S.
Thanksgiving is later than usual, so it is the week before Thanksgiving.
You too, could win a bet in a London Pub if you know the correct way to
determine Thanksgiving: 4th Thursday in November. This might or might
not be the last Thursday, and it could be the 4th or 5th weekend in
November. Steve Hamburg and I won a round of beers in London once for
knowing this.

If only I had been as savvy at a young age to figure that out, maybe I
would have made Eagle (Well, maybe not as I'm sure there would have been
something else to disqualify me)
I'll see everyone in a couple of weeks. Unless it changes, I'm thinking
we'll be indoors. I can only do so much...
