Forms and info are up at the Kansas City Bier Meisters web site for the KCBM
competition in February.
The KCBM competition is the first leg for the High Plains Brewer of the Year
2003, of which our spring competition, the Upper Mississippi Mash-Out, is
the thrid leg. Brewers earn points for a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place and the
brewer accumulating the most points over the course of the five competitions
will get the High Plains plaque. There are also competitions in Iowa, Okalhoma
and the Fargo competition in the circuit.
So, head over to http://www.kcbiermeisters.org/ and check it.
We've got plenty of good brewers in the Twin Cities. Let's see if we
can bring home the prize.

Big Beer/Jazz fans,
We now have tickets for the 2nd annual Winterfest!
Join in the fun Saturday, February 8 from 6-9pm on the upper level of the historic Hamm building (426 St. Peter Street, St.Paul).
Taste the creations from the premier brewries of Minnesota (I believe we have 15 this year), while listening to the live jazz sounds of "Chill 7". This unique evening will be limited to the first 250 people that buy tickets.($20) Remember we sold out fast last year. We look forward to your continued support and to the growth of MINNESOTA MADE BEER.
The name of the establishment is Harwell's Steakhouse and Brewery. It is
located in a shopping center in the northwest corner of the intersection of
Highway 169 and County Road 17 in Shakopee. Jonathan Crist (a very nice
person) is the brewer.
I have a problem with Granite City in St. Cloud, in that the only time I was
in there, each and every beer was poorly made. Go to O'Hara's, located less
than a mile from Granite City. The beer and atmosphere are much better at
O'Hara's.
I will miss Sherlock's Home greatly. The beer, food, and ambiance were
always top-notch. Thanks, Damian.

Well, I'm glad you asked. The next WestSide meeting
will be at the gravesite of Water Tower Brewing, next
stop is up for grabs. A generous homebrewer who lives
in the area (and HIS brewwery is still OPEN) has
offered to host, or we could head to Sherlock's for a
pint, or do both ...
Anyhow, the date is Thursday, 12/19 7:00 pm. Then we
can have some of Dave's remaining beer and discuss the
next stop.
As to Granite City, I'm a bit displeased with the
proprietor at the moment, but anything is possible in
the future I guess ...
There was also some talk of trying to have a meeting
at the former Brew Station in Shakopee (the name
escapes me at the moment).
Cheers

Wayne,
As far as my comments about Bandana Brewery go, gave it my honest review
as far as the environment goes. I personally do not enjoy listening to
someone howl out the words to a song, particularly new country songs, at
the top of their lungs while I'm trying to enjoy dinner with my
friends. What really baffled us is why they would have have Karaoke on
a Saturday night...
I support brewpubs wherever I can, Town Hall and Barley John's
especially -- I enjoy those places for the environment and the beer. If
they played a type of music I didn't enjoy or it was too loud or the
building was too cold or too hot or in any case, if I found the
environment unappealing, I think I should say so. I understand the beer
isn't ready, and yes, the beer makes about 45% of my overall judgment
[they were serving American Lager] with 25% going to food and 30% to
overall atmosphere.
I understand that Bob, isn't on this mailing list, but I think the
content of my last email will reach him. I believe any business owner
would tell you that he'd rather have a customer say "I'm not going to
give you my patronage because <reason>" rather that never say anything
at all.
We told the hostess that we weren't sticking around because of the
Karaoke. We also asked if they were going to do Karaoke every Saturday
night. She indicated that she wasn't sure.
My friends and I are going to try Bandana Brewing again, we're coming
back when the beer's ready. The environment threw us for a loop being
used to Barley John's, Blue Bricks, and Town Hall.
I'm not writing the place off -- I'm just providing my two cents.

Subject: Winterfest
Hey all-
Been kind of quiet lately, getting ready to move down to Mankato. Exciting things are happening for February, though.
What better to fight the chill of winter than the Second Annual Winterfest? I'm really excited about this year's festival because of all the new members we have. With the addition of Summit, Schell's, Herkimer and Green Mill, there may be as many brewers as consumers at this year's event.
Tickets go on sale on December 15th, and may be purchased at Town Hall, Great Waters, or Hops in Eden Prairie. Tickets are $20, cash only (no credit cards or personal checks)
The event will be held Feb 8th 6-9PM at the Hamm Building once again. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Cheers!

Speaking of Bandana Brewery -- I went in there on Saturday night with a
group of about 6 of my friends that live in Mankato.
We were going to eat dinner and have a few drinks at Bandana, but nobody
wanted to stay because they were doing Country Music Karaoke. **COUNTRY
MUSIC KARAOKE** It also didn't help that the in-house brew wasn't going
to be done for another couple weeks.
So we ate at Grizzly's and then drank at Busters, three blocks away from
Bandana [where I was stuck consuming Gin & Tonics, due to the poor beer
selection.]
I'm not sure what type of crowd Bandana is attempting to appeal to, but
it's definitely not the young, college crowd. Which is terribly
disappointing because since I started home brewing [ a year and a half
ago ], I've turned at least two dozen college-aged students in the
Mankato area to enjoying the taste of beer, and not so much the
quantity.
Perhaps, the brutal country music karaoke may only offend a fraction of
Mankato populous, but it's the fraction I associate with.
