Well, I TOLD you that spring would finally arrive. Little did I know that we would basically SKIP spring and head straight into humid, stormy SUMMER ten days after the final snow flurries! We did finally sell the same number (50) of Saints tickets that we always do. It would sure be nice though if one year everyone could just commit before the deadline/warning e-mail! :) Kudos to Jonathan C. who replied in the affirmative just moments after the initial e-mail! He's always the first to respond, and I appreciate it. If you haven't yet sent your check--please do so. I hate playing with money and lists at the game when I'm trying to enjoy myself. Send $12 per ticket, payable to MHBA, to 1015 Parker Ave., Roseville, 55113. We need a few people to volunteer to bring grills. There is a charcoal disposal area at the stadium. Tables and chairs will already be at the tailgating area. (assuming it's not still under a 30' mound of snow--no, seriously--drive by there and see! Maybe they've cleared the last bit, but the tailgating area was buried as late as a week ago.) Bring homemade beverages to share. Bring homemade food to share. Bring something to grill. The club will provide plates, condiments, napkins, etc. The lot opens at 4:00--the game begins at 7:00. Monday, May 23rd! Thanks,
John Personal. Professional.

I'm excited to see everyone at Big Brew.
The building that we are in is owned by OSI Batteries. Look for their business sign to identify our building. We are next door to Culligan Water Company. Please drive around to our back lot and park around the perimeter of the lot, leaving the area near the building for the brewing activities.
We'll pre-heat some water to save you some heating time and propane. We have some extra propane tanks incase you are running low. We have hoses to hook to your heat exchanger, not to mention we have a coil exchanger you can use, if you don't want to drag yours with. We'll also have some sanitizer mixed up for your sanitary needs.
If you are looking for some homebrew equipment, we have a bunch of excess gear that we will trade for the right amount of cold cash.
Our grill will be fired up and ready to burn whatever you toss on it.
I look forward to sampling some good beer, so don't forget to bring some of your beer to share.
If you get a moment, log into facebook and friend our brand master, Lorenzo Lucid. He has some exciting stuff to share.
See you tomorrow!

Hey everyone,
MN Craft Beer Week is fast approaching! As many of you know, I am helping to organize a home brew contest that features American styles of beer. We have extended the entry deadline to Monday, May 9th. You can drop off you beers at either Midwest or Northern Brewer. 2 bottles/$7 an entry. Best of Show is brewing your winning beer with Mike Hoops of Town Hall! More information including the styles is at: http://mncraftbeerweekcontest.com/
I also hope that many of you will sign up to help judge or steward. Judging will be on Saturday, May 14th and held upstairs at the Nomad World Pub on 501 South Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis (by the U of M). There will be two sessions: 10:00 am and 1:30 pm. (Depending on the number of entries, we might have a few sessions on other days---let me know in the notes on the contest website when you would be available to help out.) This contest is registered with the AHA/BJCP, so you will get judging points. I am also encouraging people who are interesting in learning more about beer judging to sign up. I will be pairing those with limited or no experience to certified or higher BJCP judges. This is a great opportunity to learn more about beer judging in a fairly low-key contest setting. If you sign up for both Saturday sessions, we will be providing lunch. To sign up to help out: http://mncraftbeerweekcontest.com/
As always, if you have any questions, please send me an email: gera_latour(a)hotmail.com

A few good friends of mine have started a printmaking studio, and have asked
me to extend an event invitation to any interested homebrewers. This is
scheduled to take place some time in June, so there's still plenty of time
to get brewing.
Thanks in advance,
Will

Howdy there homebrewers! Spring greetings!
The Recess Press Collective would like to invite you to participate in Go
Brew Yourself, a collaboration between local Minneapolis printmakers and
homebrewers.
Our team will create original artwork in the form of traditional prints
(relief, screen print, etchings) for bottles, posters, t-shirts, and
everything else we can get our inky hands on for each of your home brewed
beers. The main event will take place in mid-June. Printmaking and brewing
are similar in that they each require patience and creativity, and gear
themselves towards a mass-production of a new idea. Go Brew Yourself is an
opportunity for us to pool our resources and our skills to support each
others productions, and as we all know, art and alcohol have always been
best friends.
What we need from you at this point is:
1. a confirmation that you'll be submitting your brew to our project
2. name of your beer
3. a description of the taste/personality of your beer for us to begin
brainstorming imagery
We would like to begin creating the artwork as soon as we have 6-12 brewers
confirmed, so that by June we will have the printed material ready to go.
The final event will take place outdoors in South Minneapolis. Please
respond to us as soon as you can, we're all very excited to work with all of
you.
Best of luck from all of us at Recess, we look forward to hearing from you!

Sean is interviewed on Basic Brewing Radio recently:
http://www.basicbrewing.com/index.php?page=radio
He compiled data and adjusted the equation to correct the post-fermentation Brix readings to be closer to the Specific Gravity reading.
I am not claiming to fully understand all of this, but if any of you take such readings, maybe you want to give his new spreadsheet a try. I put in a few numbers I had on hand and it seems to be pretty accurate. I will be taking more refractometer readings after fermentation (something I don't normally do), along with hydrometer readings, and see how accurate it seems to be.
cheers
Don
p.s. two posts from me in two days, a new personal record.
