June MHBA Meeting: Rahr Malting Tour and Barbecue at Luskey's
June 6th, 2009 - 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The June meeting consists of two parts: a tour of Rahr Malting Company and a
barbecue and pot luck at Dave and Sue Luskey's house.
Rahr Malting is one of the few malting companies left in Minnesota. Its
Shakopee facility is the largest single-site malt producer in the world,
producing 370,000 metric tons each year.
Rahr started operations in Shakopee in 1936 with malt house #1, and then
later built four more malt houses. Malt house #5 is the most recent
addition, built in 1991 with the latest and most efficient German technology
capable of producing 12,000 bushels every 16-20 hours.
We will meet at malt house #5 between 10:40-10:50 for the tour, which
departs at 11:00 am. Bring a beer or two to give to the Rahr employees if
you wish; they are greatly appreciated. Please label the bottle with the
style of beer and the brewer's name.
After the tour, a five to ten minute drive from Rahr Malting will take us to
Dave and Sue Luskey's house, where the club meeting will resume after the
tour at approximately 12:30 or 1:00 pm.
Dave will be firing up the smoker and grill and giving brewery tours.
Please bring something to share. Both the grill and smoker will be available
for anybody to use. If you have any questions you can contact Dave at
952-496-2770 or at <mailto:sdluskey.2@netzero.net> sdluskey.2(a)netzero.net
If you are planning on attending please email me and let me know so we can
get a head count for the tour. <mailto:Csmitty42@yahoo.com>

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls,
Do you know what time it is?
Rather than subject you to stupid human tricks or lyrics that match old
melodies, the snow is gone and the club road is dirty.
I would appreciate it sincerely if we could give it a clean up shot next
Saturday starting @ 9:00. I'll have the customary donuts and coffee
and we'll meet 1/2 block north of Mainstreet in the parking lot on the
west side of Shady Oak Road.
If you can't arrive at 9:00, arrive when you can and meet the crew along
the road.
Remember, we need to wear orange vests and we have a great supply of
garbage bags. Wear heavy shoes and bring gloves.
The snow is really gone.
It covered all the ground.
It covered all the stuff
The stuff is just enough
It's dirty to the East
And dirty to the South
You get to keep the stuff
We're sure there'll be enough.
A few years ago our club picked a 2 mile stretch of road to clean and
beautify. Yours truly was supposed to organize a club event about three
times a year but unfortunately the organizational expertise had a
hick-up last fall and the task never was accomplished.
Long story short....
Meet 9:00 am MAY 9th in the parking lot 1/2 block of Mainstreet on the
west side of Shady Oak Road. Free home roast coffee, a box of donuts,
and all the road kill trash you wish to keep!!!!
P.S. I'm setting up a beer event early in the morning but should arrive
by 9:00. I'll be armed with my cell phone and will be driving my silver
Jetta.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

New Awards For White Winter Winery (so far) in 2009!
!!! Sweet Mead Gold Medal - Best of Class!!!
!!! Blueberry Mead Silver Medal!!!
The New World International Wine Competition. The NWIWC believes wines
share a common old world heritage, and should utilize the name of the
primary ingredient rather than the regions where they are grown to
identify them. The entrants in the NWIWC all compete in the Pacific Rim
marketplace. A gold medal is presented to a wine exhibiting perfect
character, balance, and structure, and containing exceptional qualities
and complexities. The "Best of Class" designation recognizes a wine with
clearly superior qualities in these areas. This designation goes to only a
handful of participants in any given year. Jon Hamilton, head mead maker
states "Sweet mead is simple yet complex, we are very, very pleased with
the results"

Tyranena Scurvy is back! IPA brewed with orange peel.
This is one of the brewers gone wild beers from last season, it was so popular they are bringing it back this time in six packs! If you missed out last year I highly recommend trying some, a great summer IPA with a subtle hint of orange. Very well done!

What up, MHBAers? It's Chip Walton.
I misplaced a pair of clip-on sunglasses at the Big Brew on Saturday at Flat Earth. I was there basically until the end, did anyone happen to see or grab them as we were all packing up and leaving?
