MhBA'ers -
Just got the word from the good folks at the Great Taste of the Midwest that they're allocating 50 tickets once again to our club for the Great Taste of the Midwest. I will coordinate it again - 4 tickets max per person. They are still $35. I will accept payment by PayPal or check - first come, first served. (Please add $2 if paying by PayPal to cover the amount they take out, plus postage.) When it sells out, I will refund unfulfilled PayPal payments, rip up checks if you paid that way.
The event held outdoors, rain or shnine, on August 8, 2009, from 1-6pm, in Olin-Turville park in Madison, Wisconsin. It's considered the second-largest craft beer event in the US (after the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado .) There will be over 100 breweries represented, with well over 500 beers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Summit Brewing Company introduces a brand new, year-round beer: Horizon Red Ale
ST. PAUL, MN – (April 7, 2009) – Summit Brewing Company is proud to present Horizon Red Ale, an emerging American hybrid ale that crosses the boundaries of styles. This red-hued ale projects an intensity of complex hops – yet allows the drinker to experience the character of the malt with notes of apricot, pine, and grapefruit. Beautifully dry hopped, Horizon Red Ale will be considered a classic!
The Horizon name stems from the use of the Horizon hop, a rare hop much revered by brewers and cherished for its pungent, spicy, bittering qualities. Cascade and Amarillo hops, rich with flavor and aroma for a bright, citrus profile, are also used in this formulation. Horizon Red is hopped at 6 different points in the brewing process, more frequency than any other Summit beer.
The Horizon Red Ale will also be the first Summit tap handle to feature bamboo, a sustainable and earth friendly material. The entire Summit tap handle line will eventually feature bamboo as the brewery continues to be stewards of green business practices.
“The development of the Horizon Red Ale is truly a collaborative effort. As this new ale crosses boundaries of style, it also possesses the passion, commitment, and expertise of all disciplines of the brewery. We’re very excited to present this beer for our devoted fans as well as new Summit drinkers,” said Mark Stutrud, Brewmaster and Founder of Summit Brewing Company.
Horizon Red Ale is officially available April 20, with a select number of establishments pouring it April 16. The beer will be available year-round, but the initial release will be at limited locations throughout the greater metro area.
Digital images of Summit Horizon Red Ale are available on request. For more information about the brewery, please visit www.summitbrewing.com .
Summit Brewing Company was founded in St. Paul, MN in 1986, and has stayed close to its roots, serving the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. It is currently available in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Texas, and Florida. Summit now produces twelve varieties of premium craft beer, including seven year-round and five seasonal beers. Since its inception, the brewery has been a consistent pioneer in the craft beer movement.

Subject: Results For the 2009 Governing Committee Election Are In
Congratulations go to Denny Conn, Curt Stock and Gordon Strong who all won
re-election to the AHA Governing Committee (GC). All three have been active
participants as Governing Committee members and each brings to the table
their varied and strong backgrounds.
Along with the support and effort these three provide the AHA GC, they also
continue to be active homebrewer activists in their local clubs and
nationally in a number of ways. Denny continues to be an active participant
on forums nationally and continues to evangelize on cheap and easy all grain
brewing methods. Gordon continues to provide tremendous support to the BJCP
program, and Kurt continues to be a major mead advocate, as well as being
the MidWest Regional National Homebrew Competition Organizer for several
years. Each has many more contributions and accomplishments, but their
efforts on the GC are extremely valuable.
All three are bright, active, decent folks that personify homebrewers. Their
willingness to share their ideas, time, knowledge and passion for
homebrewing is something I love and share with just about every homebrewer I
know and meet.
And while Denny, Curt and Gordon have won the opportunity to continue to
represent and assist the AHA, I wanted to take a minute and thank Michael
Fairbrother, Luann Fitzpatrick and Janna Mestan each for throwing their hat
into the ring. I have rarely seen such an over-qualified group of people
compete for the GC, and I truly believe any of these fine candidates could
contribute to the betterment of the AHA.
With three incumbents vying for only three available seats, this was a tough
year to run for a GC slot. In 2010 there will be five positions available
and in 2011 another half dozen. I encourage Michael, Luann, Janna and anyone
else who would like to consider running for a Governing Committee position
to consider doing so. A call for candidates will go out late this year and
this will be your opportunity to represent and assist the AHA as a Governing
Committee member!
Cheers!

Hi there,
I emailed the group awhile back about a mead i was going to make. I ended up usng 10 lbs hooney in about 3 gallons and used lalvin D47 and fermax. Now about 3 1/2 weeks later i transferred to secondary and it is still at 1.046 more or less. Ferment temp was maybe 65 F. I didn't take a first reading, but based one some rules of thumb it looks like starting OG was around 1.12. So it is maybe 10.5% ABV now.
Just curious if I should go throught the efforts of adding more yeast and energizer at this point, or if it is pretty much done and I should just throw it in the basement and forget about for awhile. There is some head space to work with so I have room to add more honey/water and yeast.
Thanks much,
Will H
OK Guys and Gals,
Looks like the weather gods were offended and decided to rain (snow) on our party. I'm assuming that everyone decided to stay home, forget the coffee and donuts, and arrive at a later date.
Fortunately for most of you attending the meeting at NB warehouse, I announced the tentative event based on common sense and weather and that announcement occurred at the start of the meeting well before the sample selection began.
Thanks for your support. Please don't go out and get cold. The garbage is mostly hidden.
Rick
Paid members of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association who attend the Saturday meeting at the Northern Brewer Warehouse will receive a FREE, votive-style tasting glass with the club logo laser-etched in the glass. Then, you will use the FREE glass to taste FREE beer, mead and cider presented by fellow members of MHBA. It will be our own Winterfest or Autumn Brew Review, except you don't have to pay $48.
This could be the only time in 2009 to get a club glass, and we specifically want to reward members who attend meetings. Brad and Whitney Thorpe of Green Arrow Design will be on hand to show their laser- etching handiwork, including glasses, bottles and tap handles. Most beer festivals give out glasses with logo applications that can wear off with use. Laser etching actually embeds the logo in to the glass, so you're stuck with MHBA forever.
Check out the MHBA Website for directions to the meeting. It runs noon to 3.

Hope to see you Saturday.
