Hi there,
my name is Catherine and I am the General Manager at the Happy Gnome in St.
Paul. We are planning to have another Firkin Fest this March 21, and I
would like to post this information online at your website/calendar and get
the word out to your members, who would most likely enjoy such an event.
Please let me know how I can go about this.
Thanks,
Catherine

"Bill Geezy tore the place up!" Jerry Jeff Walker/Singer-songwriter
A wellspring of roots/Americana music, Bill Geezy has produced another scraggly gem: the mandolin- and dobro-heavy EP "Exit Wounds." As one might gather, it's not exactly a party album, but it confirms Geezy's growing rep as a songwriter who at his best is reminiscent of John Prine. "I've never been a hobo, but sometimes a bum," he sings on the instant country classic "100 Times a Day," which is jaunty and upbeat compared with the devastating "Sweet Evangeline," a sordid story song of child sex abuse that ends in murder.
Mpls. Star Tribune
Bill Geezy's masculine gravelly voice has the ability to deliver a song as smooth as silk. Clint Hoovers harmonica blowing is just outstanding and the songs for this album are as interesting as storytelling can get. A fascinating mixture of songs on this release that will not disappoint any type of music fan. Bill has done it with this new album. It's so real cool.
Five Stars, Roots Music Report
"One of the folk scene's underrated veterans, Bill Geezy, recalls the wit and gritty soul of John Hiatt"
Minneapolis Star Tribune
"From the country-dance jam "WM seeking WF," to the blues-tinged "Shelbyville," Bill Geezy and the Promise Breakers' songs whir and chug like a train passing through the Southern swamplands. Geezy a
nd Co. keep the lonely country landscape interesting with rich stories, warm vocals and Hoover's exploding harmonica bursts. You can almost feel the humidity and taste the country grit."
Saint Paul Pioneer Press
Bill Geezy is the kind of poetic, storytelling songwriter whom you'd expect to find flourishing in hip Austin, Texas, or scuffling in Nashville. He's a witty wordsmith, an easy going melodist anchored in the folk tradition and an octave challenged yet charming singer who makes every lyric sound fly-on-the-wall natural. Think Butch Hancock, John Prine, Guy Clark - his best songs have that kind of depth, immediacy and clarity. Bil
l Geezy's album is loaded with great roots-rock!

CD Review - Bill Geezy - Exit Wounds/Rift Music Magazine
Posted on November 23rd, 2008 by Riftyrich
By Jeremy Anderson
The imagery, tones, and cadences in Bill Geezy’s music stand in sharp contrast to what one might expect from a current Twin Cities based singer/songwriter. The raspy drawl of his voice and rhythmic, processional folk/country instrumentation sound reminiscent of some rugged Texan troubadours from decades past. Yet, Geezy shouldn’t be discarded as merely an imitator or throwback musician. On Exit Wounds, his latest release, Geezy has delicately crafted together a collection of songs that subtly carry forward the folk tra
ditions of the past.
Geezy appears emotionally and artistically at odds with the constant changes of modern city life, clamoring through his music for the rustic frontier that excites him. The disparity of these two worlds fuels Exit Wounds. This theme is quintessentially exempl
ified with the metaphorical song, “Round Peg/Square Hole” and is more poignantly engaged in “A Hundred Times A Day,” in which Geezy describes daydreaming himself away from the city into imaginary western settings.
Geezy wants to live in a romanticized gutbucket world that no longer exists but resides in a world that is incapable of fully suiting him. His willingness to engage this conflict brings about his best songwriting attributes. Time is passing by and he is keeping up the best he can, through his music.
In
“Pretty Pictures,” Geezy portrays uneasiness in which he witnesses his daughter grow into a woman. His sings, “By God, if I had it my way, I would turn back time to when you were young.” Geezy is a songwriter capable of diving into the complexity of his emotions, adding later in the song, “I know this might seem like a sad song / trust me darling, it’s really not / I just never been too good at changes
/ this time things are changing a lot.” The song is a touching, understated ballad that exemplifies the intricacies of Geezy’s artistry.
Bill Geezy0s music isn’t cutting edge and doesn’t have mass-market appeal. But in a way, that’s where its value lies. Much like A Prairie Home Companion, where Geezy has performed, his music provides a powerful link to the culture of America’s past. His stories seem applicable to any time period over the past fifty years; yet, his words remain relevant to today’s listeners. Things must change and Geezy helps ease us into the world of globalization, where technology evolves faster than we can ever keep up with. His words are straightforward, often contemplative, and strikingly authentic.

Battle of the Beers, Feb 2nd
A few more new beers too.

Battle of the Beers - The Belgian Broil. Belgian vs. American - Belgian vs. Belgian-American
Michael Agnew of A Perfect Pint will be here on Monday Feb 2nd at 6:30pm for another vicious battle of the beers.
Event costs $15. There are 35 spots only. There will be a lottery drawing to pick the participants, to enter the lottery email alvey(a)thefourfirkins.com with the subject line Belgian Broil . You will receive and email on Thursday the 29th if you make it in. Pay on the night. Good luck!
Here's how Michael describes the event:
"Belgium! To some it is the world axis of beer and brewing. Its beer culture and brewing tradition spans centuries and encompasses some of the most complex and satisfying beer styles known. Since the
dawning days of the American Craft Beer movement, Belgian brews from the pious Trappists to the sassy sours have served as muse, inspiring imitation, interpretation, and adulation from a host of American brewers. But now the tables have turned. New crews of Belgian brewers have turned their vision westward and are furiously remaking American styles in return. Heeding the "more, more, more" cry of the American brewers, the Belgians are hefting heaps of hops into re-envisioned, Belgian-inflected Double IPAs. It has become a case of cross-cultural inoculation. But this begs the question... whose beer is better?
The lines have been drawn for an epic battle of the beers; a Belgian brouhaha in three rounds. Which country will emerge victorious from the crucible of Firkin Forum? You will be the judge. Let the Belgian Broil begin!"
Boulder Mojo Risin' Double IPA
This is the limited release Hop Bomb from Boulder brewing in Colorado. It's a medium gold color with a hug citrus pine aroma. Caramel and biscuit in the malt. Lightly sweet with a resinous and grapefruit hop flavor. It has a powerful flavor profile and is 10.5%
Bombers and four packs are on the shelves right now!

WinterCoat Brewing Denmark.
The WinterCoat brewery is a family-owned and operated brewery situated on an old farm just outside of the village of Sabro in Denmark. Niels J. Thomsen, owner and brewer, was born in the farmhouse. The brewery has a capacity of 8 hectolitres, and they can brew this 4 times a week. Niels Thomsen and his wife, Dísa Fink are the sole workforce behind the brewery. We produce mainly English-inspired beers (ales), 8 of which are available year-round, supplemented by 4-6 seasonal brews.
Here at the Firkins we just got our first two beers from them:
Vild
Vildmoseol :
Subtle notes of peat-smoked malt, the fresh spiciness of bog myrtle and the bittersweet fruitiness of rowan berries. These 3 ingredients harmonise beautifully with the other malts and hops used. A wonderful beer to drink with game, lamb and braised meats - and it does justice to pickled herring as
well!
DoubleHop:
WinterCoat's Imperial IPA is light amber in color. The fruitiness from the ale yeast combines beautifully with the body of the malts and the freshness of the hops to create a very well-balanced, though very heavily hopped brew. Double Hop has a heady hop aroma without too much bitterness. The smooth taste belies its 8.2% alcohol content. This beer is dangerously pleasant to drink!
Schell Bock All new recipe for 2009
Each year the promise of spring was confirmed as the first keg os Schell's Bock rolled onto waiting delivery wagons. And since 1860, Schell's Bock has continued in the true German tradition. Completely reformulated for 2009, Schell's Bock has replaced Caramel Bock as our late winter seasonal. Brewed
with a harmonious blend of 10 different types of malt and noble hops, Schell's Bock is fermented slowly, and then lagered for an extended period of time to ensure a smooth finish. Perfect for passing even the coldest winter day.

Happy New Year all,
Here is a reminder/flyer for Hop Fest at The Muddy Pig. It is set up similar to the Belgian Beer Fest if you attended that. 60 or so different hoppy beers available on these dates. 3 5oz glasses $8 so you can try to sample your way through responsibly. Some of these beers have not been here before on draft. We will also have a few fun things like “dry Hopping” your own beer with hop pellets and the possibility of having our own Dogfish Head Style Randal, which is like a dry hopping tube that runs off of the beer faucet on the beer tower. Each glass of beer travels through the filter of hops and into your glass giving nothing but hop goodness.
Hope to see you there,
Corey
