Congratulations go to Exam Director Steve Piatz on earning his Grand Master III rank. Steve is the fourth judge to reach this rank. Coincidentally, I also note that Steve just hit the mark of his 1000th exam graded, second only to Pat Baker. Quite a milestone of service indeed.
Please join me in congratulating Steve on this great achievement.

Congratulations to club member Michael Agnew, who became the club's first certified "Cicerone"! (That's like a wine sommelier, except for beer!)
Good job Michael!

With this issue, welcome in new Boiler editor Chip Walton! Thanks for
taking it on Chip! Chip would be interested in all beer and brewing related
articles from you - they don't have to be long, even a few paragraphs on a
new beer you tried, a new brewery you visited, a beer related trip you took
or some new brewing technique or gizmo would be great!

Next Meeting: Sunday, Feb 8 at the Black Forest Inn on 1st Ave and Nicollet,

Hello MNBrewers.
Did anyone grab a half-full keg of dopplebock from the Mashout? I left mine on tap through the night, but left right at the start of the awards ceremony. The keg had a yellow postage tag on it with my name.
Thanks,
Jon Messier
Greetings
Yesterday I sent out a message about the availability of honey by the
bucket. David responded with some additional information that I
included below. So far, we have enough response for about three
buckets. Hopefully this message will spark your interest and make you
think about mead and take some action to gather raw ingredients to do
so.
...When I responded yesterday I was out of the office for the day and
couldn't give you much of an answer via my blackberry. All our honey is
from our own bees. We live in Champlin and have hives here, in the Rush
City area and up by our lake home up near Park Rapids. We sell to
everyone from our neighbors, homebrew clubs, food coop's, wholesale
barrels, and etc. This is a sideline business for us. We had approx. 60
hives this last year and are committed to just under 100 hives for 2009.
The honey I sell to the clubs and etc. is clover/ basswood honey (light
in color and very tasty). The Honey from our bee yards up by lake place
is mostly sun flower which is sold wholesale to our Wisconsin connection
who has a direct market for it....
So there you have it direct from the bee keeper. The price is pretty
decent at $95 per 5 gallon bucket (60 pounds). Let me know if you want
in on this and we will arrange for delivery to a club meeting.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel BJS

Club members, friends, and mead makers.
Rick Oftel here with another exciting announcement from The Minnesota
Homebrewers Association. OK, maybe that is a little strong for the
moment but here is the situation and opportunity. I located a beer
keeper in Champlin with a good inventory of local honey for sale and
thought we could consider a potential club purchase. Bee hives are
located in this area and the honey costs $95 per 5 gallon bucket (about
60 pounds).
If any club member is interested, please respond directly to my e-mail
or leave a message on my cell phone.
The first task is to determine the level of interest. If enough
interest, we will schedule distribution for a future meeting.
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to this message. Now get
back to work.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel
