I'm starting to put together plans for the 2008 Interclub Campout.
Probably the last weekend in June.
So, my first request is for volunteers to help out and also for ideas.
I'm hoping to have the event somewhere relatively close to the Twin
Cities. I've started talking to the Three Rivers Parks District about
some of their facilities and we also have a private location on our
'possible' list. If you know of an excellent group site in the area,
please let me know. It would need to hold 100 people, just an estimate,
and have adequate parking, water, etc. A shelter would be nice and
toilets or other facilities a bonus.
Tolerance of kegs is a requirement.
If there are activities you would like, send along your suggestions.
Just realize that you'll have nominated yourself to coordinate that
activity as well!
Thanks!

Subject: Total Lunar Eclipse NEXT THURSDAY EVENING!!!
Hey Kids,
Next Wednesday, there will be a total lunar eclipse occurring at the perfect time of night to see it comfortably?
Well the "totality" phase of the February 20st, 2008 lunar eclipse will begin at 9:01PM CST (10:01PM EST, 8:01PM MST) and lasts for 50 minutes, ending at 9:51PM CST.
The entire eclipse (including the beginning and ending partial phases) lasts from 7:43PM CST to 11:09PM CST.
Lets all hope for a clear night.
Here is a link to all the specific information about the eclipse:
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEmono/TLE2008Feb21/TLE2008Feb21.html
I strongly recommend you go to this webpage and GLANCE through it. Of course, if you have a mind to, you are most welcome to read it in its entirety.

Gary
NOTE: A friend of mine, John Dooley, who was the channel 4 WCCO weatherman and is now a college meteorology professor, responded to my note with:
"Tell your friends this is the LAST total lunar eclipse visible from this area until December 2010."
He said that what the computer models are predicting looks promising for clear weather.

Jim Koch posted this on the ProBrewer forums. Pretty nice of them to
make them available to other breweries.
For a couple of months now, we've all been facing the unprecedented
hops shortage and it's affected all craft brewers in various ways. The
impact is even worse on the small craft brewers--openings delayed,
recipes changed, astronomical hops prices being paid and brewers who
couldn't make beer.
So we looked at our own hops supplies at Boston Beer and decided we
could share some of our hops with other craft brewers who are
struggling to get hops this year. We're offering 20,000 pounds at our
cost to brewers who need them. Specifically, we are able to spare
10,000 pounds of East Kent Goldings from Tony Redsell, a top English
grower featured by Michael Jackson in Michael Jackson's Beer Companion
(page 75 has a picture) and 10,000 pounds of the German Noble hop
Tettnang Tettnanger from small farms in the Tettnang region in
Germany. These are both type 90 pellets from the 2007 crop and are the
exact same hops we brew our own beers with. We're not looking to make
money on this so we're selling them at our cost of $5.72 a pound plus
$.75 a pound to cover shipping and handling for the Goldings and $5.42
per pound plus $.75 a pound to cover shipping and handling for the
Tetts. They're packed in 22# foil bags, boxed four bags to a box in 88
lb. boxes and will be shipped from cold storage.
The purpose of doing this is to get some hops to the brewers who
really need them. So if you don't really need them, please don't order
them. And don't order them just because we're making them available at
a price way below market. Order them because you need these hops to
make your beer. We're not asking questions, so let your conscience be
your guide.
A few mechanics--until we know how much need there is, we've put a
maximum out there of 6 boxes per brewer, which is 528 pounds. You can
order less in 88 pound increments. You pay shipping. If we get more
orders than the 20,000 pounds, we'll have a lottery. We will be
putting the basic information to order, some faqs and the actual offer
on our website www.samueladams.com in the next day or so, probably no
later than Tuesday. Look for "Hop-Sharing Program" on the front page
of the site.
We hope this will make brewing a little easier for those hardest hit
by the hop shortage.

Hello All,
This is just a reminder that the MHbA club library is available for all members. We have a great selection of books available including "Brew like a Monk" by Stan Hieronymus, this years Upper Mississippi Mashout guest speaker. I had the pleasure of judging with Stan on the Belgian Specialty category, and let me tell you this man knows his beer! His book is very good if you are interested in brewing Belgian style ales. The historical background on the subject is second to none and the length of descriptions of the brewing processes is quite involved. I found the style of writing to be detailed, but not overly technical, and best of all it was easy to read and very enjoyable.
The library also has a counter pressure bottle filler available for check out. There are a few competitions down the road (.. check out the latest issue of the Boiler), so if your holding back on putting entries in because you don't have the equipment, you no longer have an excuse!
Speaking of contests, Al Boyce will be driving down to the KCBM competition next Friday. If you have entries for this competition bring them to Saturdays meeting at the Herkimer and I will get them to Al before he leaves. Check out: http://www.kcbiermeisters.org/Competition2008.htm for competition details.
Cheers,
Jon Messier
Return your books so others can read them!

I am driving down to the KCBM competition in Kansas City on next Friday. I would be willing to cart entries down with me if anyone is entering. The club meeting this Saturday is the logical place to bring them, but I won't be there. Jon - would you be willing to collect them and bring them over to my place? Let me know....
Also, if anyone who is not going to the club meeting can get the entries to me by next Thursday, I will take them.
The deadline isn't until March 2, so if you can't get your entries ready by next Friday, you can still ship them.
Here are details on the contest:
Deadline: March 2
Judging: March 8

Is anyone planning on judging at this event? Anyone considering carrying local entries to the event? I know last year the MHbA did pretty well as a club here and it would be nice to see the same turn out this year. Get your entries ready!

One of the "alumni" of the BJCP classes that I organize asked me to forward this to the club:
From: magnew63(a)msn.comTo: gera_latour(a)hotmail.comSubject: Beer Tasting EventDate: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 08:29:23 -0600
Gera,
My new company that I told you about at Winterfest (whatever it ends up being called) has booked it's first beer tasting. I have teamed up with John Glas, owner of Wineglas, a company that does for wine in the TC what I am trying to do with beer, to promote this event. Anyway, here's the details...
When: Monday, March 3rd at 7:00 PM
Where: The Happy Gnome, 498 Selby Ave., St. Paul, 55102
What: Tasting 8 great beers in a worldwide beer style survey, with instruction on how to taste beer, particulars of the styles, and what to look for in taste, aroma and appearance of each beer. Plus lot's interesting beer lore and plenty of delightfully witty repartee.
Cost: $25/person
What to do: Call me at 612-724-4514 for info or to reserve a spot. Space is limited.
Thanks,
Michael Agnew2421 33rd Ave S.Minneapolis, MN 55406612.724.4514magnew63(a)msn.com
