Greetings fellow beer lovers!
Bull Falls Brewers (Wausau), with the help of Central Wisconsin Draught Board (Stevens Point), are holding the first ever BJCP/AHA sanctioned homebrew contest (The Golden Grower) in north central Wisconsin on Saturday April 19th, 2008 at Hereford & Hops, Wausau, WI. We need BJCP judges!
Since this is our first attempt at an official contest were not 100% certain what to expect. Were guessing well have approximately 75 entries, and estimating needing about 20 judges and/or stewards. Members of both our clubs are ready to help in any way we can.
For more information please go to
http://www.bullfalls-homebrewers.org/2008GG.html
and click on the gold medallion in the center of the page. Our competition website should have most of the information you need regarding dates, times, lodging, entries, etc. Judges are allowed to bring entries on the day of the event, as long as payment and entry documentation is submitted in advance, and your first entry is free! Were also planning a reception on Friday night with free food & beer, food provided during judging on Saturday, and a brewery tour and brewmaster Q&A session before the awards ceremony. I also want to point out that the Best of Show winner will have the opportunity to brew their beer at Hereford & Hops! If also an AHA member, the winning brewer will have the chance to compete in the GABFs Pro-Am competition as well!
If you can help us out please fill out the Judges Registration Waiver enclosed and return to
Travis Skroch
207 Brookfield Dr.
Stratford, WI 54484
If you have any other questions please contact me by e-mail at tappr(a)yahoo.com, or call me at 715.687.9941. Note, the hotel block runs out on March 21!
We hope you can join us!

I'm a little confused by this. Most of the people attending will not be homebrewers? Homebrewers are being asked to donate 2-3 gallons of their homebrew for the chance of winning a gift certificate? Normally when we enter contests we only donate a couple bottles.
It seems kind of like an easy way to get a lot of free (and most excellent) beer for the bash. Am I the only one who sees it this way? Homebrewers are often generous folks, but this might be asking a bit much. I guess you'll see what kind of response you get. I could be wrong - it's happened at least 3 times.
Oh, I'm down with the biking. I bicycle commute 9 months of the year. But I'm also a brewer who has a raised eyebrow at this request.
Please note: message attached
Homebrewers use Cornelius kegs, previously
used for soda pop and hold 5 gallons
-this is what we are looken for. this was explained to zips as to what would be
coming and they said they could provide the equipment to dispense 20 of these!
had a question regarding this so i thought id clarify a bit more.
also if you only have bottles but have a fair amount of them by all means bring the bottles! you can also enter with them we just wont have someone to open and pour your bottle!! :) Please try to have a fair amount to taste we have an expectation of 200-300 people.

Guys and Gals,
Currently, we have four master brewer volunteers producing Oktoberfest,
Summer Wheat, Mild Ale, and Smoked Porter.
We have one additional opening for Master Brewer. All you need to do is
to submit a good recipe that doesn't use too many hops and agree to
supervise the brewing of your batch. Of course, this means you need to
mash the grist, operate the outlet valves, transfer the liquid, and
clean up a bit after each function. Well, there might be some lifting
and mixing. All in all, it is a low key event designed to introduce you
to all grain brewing. OK, you might get your feet wet.
After producing all of this bitter wort, the fun begins. Most of us do
not have the facilities to ferment 40+ gallons of beer or the friends to
help consume it. There will be at least 20 openings for bitter wort and
more if we add a fifth batch.
We have an exciting day in the planning for May 3rd. Please respond
with your initial requests for bitter wort.
The first five responders to each category will have the opportunity to
purchase 5 gallons. Currently, we believe we can sell the bitter wort
for about $1.50 per gallon but need to check with out materials
department a little further.
Get your requests in! Don't forget about the additional Master Brewer
opening!
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

Pitchers and catchers have reported, and the Twins take on the Reds this
Thursday.
The sun, no longer denied its inherent brawn, instead chases the chill each
morning, leaving in its stead promises of fairer weather.
The MHBA Chili Cook-Off is just around the corner.
All this can only mean one thing-
Baseball season is near at hand!
That in turn tells us that it's time once again to sign up for the club's
tailgating party at Midway Stadium with the Saint Paul Saints.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 22nd. That's when the MHBA takes over
a tailgating spot at 4:00, quaffs copious homebrews, grills and grills and
grills some more, then staggers in to catch a few innings of baseball
without getting rowdy enough to get tossed out. (and at the SAINTS, one can
really never get TOO rowdy!)
When you realize that you do not want to miss out, please send $12 per
ticket (payable to MHBA) to John Longballa, 1211 Minnehaha Ave W, Saint
Paul, 55104. Everyone in attendance receives a free Saints baseball.
The club picks up the cost of the tailgate spot, everyone brings food and
drink, and select volunteers bring grills.
This has become a SERIOUSLY fun event, so do not miss it! In years past
there has been cross-dressing, Pedal-Pubbing, and cheesburgers made with
Krispie Kremes! Families and non-homebrewing friends are very welcome.
Please send your ticket money now, so that we can plan accordingly.
Thanks,
John

Guys and Gals,
With the pending arrival of spring, Big Brew 08 is just around the
corner. The location is the same and the equipment is familiar to last
year's participants. We will toast Jimmy at high noon, make a whole
bunch batch of bitter wort, and in the afternoon, send you on your way
to ferment, clarify, bottle, and enjoy. There is a key word here folks:
afternoon.
Jim and Jim have again volunteered the use of their amazingly huge
breweries. These will be setup in the morning and ready to rock and
roll. Water is again on the house. The back yard is open for anyone
wishing to bring additional equipment.
Just like the rest of the brewing world, we need to plan ahead and
ensure we have adequate raw materials for the proposed brews. Hops are
still available but we need to pay more and accept less. Not a great
deal but the best remedy for high prices is high prices.
With this in mind, I need some brewing suggestions. I think we would be
best to refrain from a Hazed and Confused clone in favor of a more
balanced Mild or Northern Brown. Possibly Irish Red, Kolsch, or Wheat.
We can brew anything you think up but need to brew things that can be
lautered in a reasonable length of time.
So here is the deal. In the next week, I need four or more beer
suggestions and four or more nominations for brew masters. Remember,
you can nominate others as long as you bring them over! Brew masters
will pick assistants, helpers, and cleaners plus they get to pick their
recipe.
Recipe formulation (I have a few) is pretty simple. Extract efficiency
is about 80-85% so any BJCP judge can tell you what that means in terms
of gallons, gravity, and grain. You pick a recipe, beg, borrow or seal
the ingredients, bring them over during big brew and haul your wort
away!
What could be more simple?
Most folks might have trouble carrying home 40+ gallons of bitter wort
so it makes sense to share your stuff. We eventually want you to go
away but we want you to be happy.
Here is my suggestion. We organize the --ap out of the event which is
going to be fun. First step we find the master brewers and the recipes.
After master brewers and recipes are chosen, we then move to the
distribution. Each batch produces about eight 5 gallon batches.
So grab your beverage and find your chair. Search your recipes and make
your suggestions.
So Nominate your self
Or nominate your friend
Just make sure they attend.
The last item is money. It takes money for all the stuff we do. Last
year we charged about $1.00 per gallon of bitter wort. We can't keep
the price this low but we will shoot for something reasonable.
You can send short messages to my work address.
These are my first suggestions subject to interpretation, modification,
and early withdrawal. I hope to hear from many of you in the near
future.
I only have access to the barn account so if there are other lists,
please send out a copy.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

P.S. Remember MHBA Road? It's almost time for the spring cleanup.

Guys and gals,
We have our first recipe and our master brewer for Smoked Porter.
Don't think about this too long. Get your suggestions and recipes in
quickly. Only 3 (or maybe 4) more openings for May 3.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel
