2009 Upper Mississippi Mash-Out
Now that summer is gone and fall has seen better days it's time to start
thinking about the 2009 Upper Mississippi Mash-out. With entries due in
less than 80 days there is plenty of time to brew award winning beers.
Along with judging there will be a presentation by Kirby Nelson from Capital
Brewery in Madison Wisconsin, an indoor pub crawl with beer from local
breweries and Brewpubs, and a German themed banquet featuring cuisine
prepared by Manny Krug. In addition to the 28 BJCP categories there will be
a New brewer and Eis-anything category again this year. The Upper
Mississippi Mash-Out is a qualifying event for the
<http://www.kcbm.org/NewHighplains.htm> High Plains Brewer of the Year
award, the <http://sphbc.truthbrew.com/mwhboy/> Midwest Homebrewer of the
Year award! and the <http://hbd.org/mcab/> Masters Championship of Amateur
Brewing (MCAB) competition! Further information can be found at

Mark your calendars:

Indoor Pub Crawl - January 23rd, 2009
Banquet & awards ceremony - January 24th, 2009
Is there anyone who lives close to Jordan and is coming to Teach a Friend to
Homebrew on Saturday that could help Mark transport some of the cider order?
Chris Smith
Just a reminder that Saturday is Teach a Friend Homebrew Day at Barley John's. Make sure to bring your lunch/beer money and dress warm.
Also, since we missed the last AHA Club Only Contest, I didn't want to miss this deadline. If you have a homebrewed IPA, please 3 bottles. We will select the best example to represent MHBA.
See you Saturday! -Gera

Fellow local brewers,
Northern Brewer is looking for some part-time help at our retail store.
The two available positions are for Sundays and Mondays. The Sunday shift
would be from 12pm to 5pm and the Monday shift would be sometime between
10am to 7pm, either for most of the day or at least a 4 hour period, the
details of the shift can be worked out at a later time. The position
requires homebrewing experience, with ideal candidates being versed in wine
making and mead making as well. Customer service/retail skills are a plus.
Starting wage is $11/hour. Other benefits include NB's employee discount and
access to Northern Brewer's various homebrewing products and equipment.
Please stop in our retail store and ask for Juno to inquire about details.
Please do not respond to the club mailing lists. We have general
applications but if you have a basic resume that would work too.
Thanks.

Thanks to all the brewers who entered their beers in this year's CBS
Spooky Brew Review homebrew competition, held yesterday. And especially
thanks to all the judges and stewards who made this competition happen.
One category below was added at the last minute. A group of drop-off
entries was misplaced by the receivers, but was found in the afternoon
(in a kitchen cooler) after judging was nearly done. This is one of
those organizer's nightmares, but it happened. Those which were in
categories still being judged, were judged as they should be. A couple
others that were offbeat custom beers anyway, were shifted into the
Specialty category since it was still being judged. The others were
placed into a new open category, and judged against one another, with
ribbons awarded for the winners. It was the best we could think of to
do, at 3:00PM with the competition winding down. We're just really glad
they were finally found. We apologize to the brewers of these beers, and
we also thank those judges who agreed to stay to judge a third flight of
the day to get these beers properly evaluated.
