Subject: New Minnesota Homebrew Club
I'd like to announce the formation of the Minnesota's newest homebrew
club, the Blue Ox Brewers Society in Baxter, MN. I believe we are the
first ever homebrew club in the Brainerd Lakes area, but certainly not
the first in northern MN.
The club meets once a month and also puts out a monthly newsletter. If
you're a nearby brewer, vacationing in the area, or would like to be
added to our mailing list, send us an email at blueoxbrewers(a)gmail.com.

Keep Brewing!

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them...
well, I have others. Groucho Marx
The MN Craft Brewers Guild has asked the MHBA to have a table at the Autumn
Brew Review on Saturday, August 29th. In light of all that the professional
brewing community has done for the club, we said, sure, well help!
They would like us to provide kegs of water for the crowd. We will also
have club info at the table, info about Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day, and
the fantastic teaching board produced by Gera.
Question #1 = who will volunteer to bring a keg or two of tap water? Label
the keg, drop it at the table, then pick it up before you head home.
Question #2 = can whoever has the club jockey box bring that? Im certain
that the Guild will have some ice available that day. We can run the kegs
through that.
Question #3 = who would like free admission to the ABR? I have two tickets
for volunteers who can set up the table and watch it for parts of the day.
You can enter early, I believe, and participate in the early drinking. But
the two people need to be in charge of the table and kegs and take them away
at the end. I need these two people to organize this process. Youre on
the spot, but you get in free! :-)
Im fairly certain that other MHBA members in attendance would probably be
willing to relieve the table volunteers periodically. Worst case
scenarioyou spend ½ the day manning the table and the other volunteer takes
the other ½.
Thanks much,
John
Dear Judges, Volunteers and Entrants to the 2007 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition -
First, I would like to thank everyone who participated and volunteered in Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition. I would like to publicly thank the entire staff: Al Boyce, Bryon Adams, Janis Sines, Greg Van de Mark and Adam Stern. It would have made my job much more difficult without them. These folks are the best. I would also sincerely thank all of judges, stewards and some top-notch BOS judges: Kris England, Paul Deinhart and Horace Cunningham.
The Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition is not your run-of-the-mill homebrew competition (if any really are). Everything for the Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition is spread out over weeks rather days. We send in our bottles and we wait a week. We judge our entries and… we wait a week. We get the results at the Awards Ceremony at the State Fair and… we wait a week. You get the picture. I would like to sincerely thank the all entrants and volunteers for patiently waiting for their results, scoresheets, prizes and medals. Speaking of medals….
The medals awarded in this year’s competition had "Minnesota Home Brewers Association" cast on them yet again. I talked with the Minnesota State Fair in February about the medals and I was assured that it would be taken care of. Obviously, that was not so. So, again, I apologize on behalf of the State Fair competition for this - the contest is co-sponsored by the MHBA and the Saint Paul Home Brewers Club. The medals were designed by the State Fair, not by the contest committee, and were cast without our having seen the design. Next month, in October, I’ll start talking to the State Fair staff about this and including other signage, so that the 2008 State Fair medals read only "2008 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition." There was no intention to leave SPHBC or any other club off, or to aggrandize the MHBA, it was just a mistake on the part of the Minnesota State Fair.
Also, the tri-panel display board that was in the State Fair display at the Creative Arts building was created by and loaned to the Fair by the Minnesota Home Brewers Association, not by the State Fair competition staff or by the State Fair. It was there to provide information regarding homebrewing to the general public.
We appreciate the help and cooperation of all judges, volunteers and entrants, and we value help from any Minnesota brew club who wants to help with the State Fair Homebrew Competition. We had 346 entries this year - 20% increase than last year, and with everyone's help, the contest will continue to prosper and grow.
Please foward to Minnesota clubs.
Here are the clubs: Boreal Brewers, Blue Ox Brewers Society, Buffalo Ridge Brewers, Brewers In Chaos, Cloudy Town Brewers, Cross River Alliance of Zymurgists, Grin and Brew It, Headwaters Homebrew Club, Jack Of All Brews, Men of our Wort, Minnesota Mashers, Minnesota Timberworts, Mobius Microbrewers, Northern Ale Stars, Northern Lagers, Northern Lights 'N Stouts, Rosemount Homebrewers Guild, Rum River Wort Hogs, South Metro Wort Mongers, St Paul Homebrewers Club, Three Rivers United Brewers, Up North Brewing Club and Yeasty Boy Homebrew Club.
Kind Regards,
Sean Hewitt
2007 MN State Fair Homebrew Competition Organizer
I'll provide one possible route. Those of you coming on 394, take the Hopkins Crossroad exit and head south. Go about half a mile to the first true right-turn lane. It's halfway up a small hill. Take that right turn on Fetterly. Nottingham Crt. is two blocks in, and the street sign is in my front yard. Park on Nottingham because Fetterly is a very narrow road.
See you Saturday.
Paul

Thanks again clean up crew. Early reports indicate a relatively clean
road with some McDonalds bags. We will organize the event at Paul's
beginning at 9:30 and will head out around 10:00. If everything goes as
planned, we may finish as early as noon or if we run into major
problems, it may drag on for a few more hours.
Anyhow let's hope for good weather. Bring your cell phone if you have
one and add my name to your directory
Paul lives in the boonies so do a Google search on his address. Some
nearby streets are closed so leave early. Hopefully Paul can add a
touch to his location. I think most of you have been there before.

Club members and potential trash collectors,
Today, my contact at Hennepin County stated they erected new signage
proclaiming the Minnesota Home Brewers Association proudly adopted Shady
Oak Road between Minnetonka Boulevard and Excelsior Boulevard. We did
mention that adoption has responsibilities right?
Yours truly signed a contract with Hennepin County stating that our club
will keep this two mile stretch of road reasonably clean for the next
two years. Based on your positive responses, this should work out
nicely and is a good community volunteer effort. The first clean up
date is set for September 15th and the clean up begins at 10:00 am.
Fine print:
Orientation: Before we begin picking up, we need a short orientation.
Yes, I know you know how to pick up stuff but we do need to plan the
event, do it safely, and keep parked cars along the roadside to a bare
minimum. Also, we need to exchange phone numbers so if first aid or
other assistance is needed, it will be a phone call away. Let's begin
the day at about 9:30 with some home roasted black coffee at:
Paul Dienhart place
2344 Nottingham Ct.
Minnetonka, MN 55305
Things to bring: Boots or strong shoes, gloves, nail-on-a-stick,
sunglasses, cap, sunscreen, water jug, bug juice, cell phone, etc.
Please, no banners or signs along the roadway.
After work (fun stuff): You were concerned we hadn't considered this?
Since many of you will leave your cars at Paul's place, it is logical to
return and get them. It seems highly logical to provide the workers
with some sort of stronger refreshments and good food since this
undertaking is hard work. Paul has also volunteered to remain behind
and cook up some wonders on his new BBQ. Rumor has it that a secret dry
rub previously used at a St. Paul church will be used on pork ribs and
maybe a chicken or two will get tossed in for good measures. We will
have good food and beverages for all volunteers.
So there you have it. See you September 15, 9:30 am at Paul's place.
Please pass this message on to other homebrewers you believe may be
interested in participating.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

Sounds like the club jockey box will be in use at Paul Dienhart's for the after-highway clean-up get together. If anyone has one they could loan me for the weekend, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.
