=== Franklin Delano Roosevelt, on the day Prohibition was repealed. ====
Sorry for the VERY late notice on this!
Tonite, April 11, we will pick the EXTRACT-based beer to represent the
MhBA in the AHA National Club-Only competition. The beer can be ANY
style, but must derive at least 50% of it's fermentables from malt extract
(dry or liquid.)
We will do this in conjunction with BJCP class, which is BIG, so bring two
bottles. If your beer is chosen to go on to represent the club, you will
need to send in two additional bottles to the contest. I know there are a
LOT of extract brewers in the club - this is your chance to shine! I hope
to see a lot of entries there.
The judging will take place at 7pm, at Gera Exire LaTour's house:
3757 Dupont Avenue North,Minneapolis, MN 55412.
Take 94W to the Dowling exit. Take a left and go 6 blocks to Dupont.
House with white with turquoise trim on the left side in front of the fire
hydrant on the big hill. Careful on the steps.

Subject: Surly Grand Opening
Mark your calanders!
Surly is planning on opening to the public for tours (which involve beer
tastings) on May 12 & 13. Yes 2006. Look, we have been really busy brewing
beer because people keep drinking it. Yes, it took a long time. Look, it's
gonna be cool.
Two beers on cask, Bourbun Bender and maybe a dry-hopped cask of Furious.
I'm not sure exactly, I'll have to see what Todd wants to do special for the
Grand Opening. Of course we will have Bender and Furious on tap. Our summer
beer? Well it may or might not be ready. More details to follow. See you
here.
The Stainless Brewer Contest
(or-the Iron Chef gets drunk!)
In the spirit of the Iron Chef cooking contest, the MHBA will hold a "Stainless Brewer" contest in conjunction with Big Brew Day, Saturday, May 6th at Rick Oftel's house. For those who aren't familiar with the Iron Chef contest, contestants make a recipe of their design that must include a mystery ingredient that is revealed at the last moment.
At the Big Brew meeting on Saturday, May 6th, teams will receive identical brewing kits that contain a variety of ingredients. You may bring your own water and water treatment, and you may select yeast before or after the fact, but the rest of the ingredients are set and unknown until the event. Teams may use as much of an ingredient as they see fit. The goal is to brew the tastiest beer using only those ingredients that are provided for the team. Once the ingredients are revealed, teams will declare to the contest organizer which style they are attempting to replicate. Beers are brewed to be evaluated and enjoyed at a future meeting.
Before May 6th, you may form a team of two to four persons and select a team name (please make them fun!). Please send that information to me (John Longballa) at jlongballa(a)newspiritschool.org. If you don't have a team, please send me your name and I will help you find a team. The team entry fee is $20 to cover the cost of ingredients. Please also let me know if you will be brewing extract with steeping grains or all-grain.
At the Big Brew event, besides brewing the national recipe, teams will finally get their ingredient package. After discussion with your team, you will secretly declare which style you hope to brew. You may use whatever in the kit suits your needs. Water and yeast are up to the team, and since Midwest isn't far from Rick's, you could make the decision after inventing your recipe. Please make sure to send me your team name and members!
Please consider forming a team and giving this a try! It should turn out to be a most interesting challenge, and there's sure to be a wonderful prize for the STAINLESS BREWER! Thanks.

Subject: Muddy Pig Newsletter
Beer Lovers,
Today we celebrate the repeal of Prohibition and our right to enjoy good
beer. To mark to occasion our friends at Summit Brewing Company have
organized a pub crawl with The Muddy Pig and The Happy Gnome. Pints of
Summit beers are just $3 all day at both pubs. Yippee!
The Happy Gnome will be serving up Easter brunch on the 16th from 11 a.m. to
3 p.m. Reservations are not required but would probably be a good idea.
Summit's newest beer, Scandia, is their take on a Belgian white ale with a
Scandinavian twist. It makes its debut on Thursday, April 20 and will be
available at both The Muddy Pig and The Happy Gnome.
On a sad note, the 9th annual "I Love Beer" pub tour will not be happening
this spring. Two more pubs dropped out this year because the owners just
don't get it. But I was talking with Pete over at Town Hall (Pete and I set
up the first tour in '98) and we think we can get things back on track this
fall with a new and improved list of participants. The tour must go on.
That's it for now,
Mark
