This email is going out to all BJCP judges in Minnesota, as well as the
metro area homebrew clubs. I apologize if you get more than one copy of
this.
The Minnesota Home Brewers Association will be sponsoring a BJCP exam on
Saturday, April 29, at 9am. The exam will be held at the University of
Minnesota, Minneapolis Campus. We will meet at 8:30am at the Coffman
Union, at the Great Hall fireplace, and proceed from there promptly at
8:45am to a nearby classroom where the exam will be administered.
Many of you have sufficient judging and volunteer points to go up a level
in the BJCP, and are only shy a few points on either the tasting or the
written portion. Please contact me if you would like to know how many
points you have, and what your past scores were on the taste or written
portions of the exam. I can also help you get your password so that you
can log on to the BJCP website and check out your record for yourself.
You may re-take both sections for $30, or take just one section
(recommended) for only $15.
Here are the BJCP Levels, and the score and points required to earn each
level, to refresh your memory:
Level Exam Score Points Service Req
Apprentice Less than 50
Recognized 60 or better 0
Certified 70 or better 5
National 80 or better 20
Master 90 or better 40
Grand Master 90 or better 100 Yes
Please let me know prior to April 19 if you would like to re-take the BJCP
exam to better your score, so I can prepare for you at the test (I will be
on vacation between April 19-April 27). YOU WILL NOT BE SEATED FOR THE
TEST UNLESS YOU NOTIFY ME IN ADVANCE THAT YOU ARE RE-TAKING IT!!!
Thanks!
- Al

Subject: Spring Updates
<http://www.midwestsupplies.com>
As spring descends upon us, fermentation temps are warming up all over the
country and it is a perfect opportunity to start making some Belgian beers
and German Hefe's. We are featuring some new ingredients to help you with
your recipe crafting and we at Midwest are excited to get our fermenters
percolating. Things have finally slowed down at Midwest from our busy last
few months. Every year starting in September for the winemaking season, the
employees at Midwest hold on tight for a wild ride as the amount of orders
coming in literally double in one month. The madness continues through the
holidays and finally every spring around this time we all let out a deep
breath and say "Wow". Thank you for being part of that "Wow".
All that being said, now is a great time to place orders at Midwest - most
orders placed at Midwest through 9 am CST each weekday morning are being
shipped that same day. It is also a great time to call and ask for advice.
The employees at Midwest love to talk about beer and wine making and all
have experience in the hobby. We look forward to hearing from you in either
capacity.
Thank you as always for your business. Dave from Midwest

latest Belgian ingredient to use in your beer - it's from Belgium and used
by Belgians and will bring you one step closer to that elusive Belgian
taste. Dark Candi Syrup is a by-product of the rock candi production. White
beet sugar is boiled and then cooled. While cooling, rock sugar is formed
and removed and the syrup is left over. Candi Syrup has a more intense
flavor and deeper color than rock candi sugar. Imported from Belgium and
used by at least one major Belgian Brewery. Use 1/4c per gallon to

ITALIAN PIEDMONT NEBBIOLO d'ALBA (Neb-yoh-low dal-buh) Situated in the
northwest corner of Italy, distinctive chalky soils show the best growing
areas on the hillsides running down from the Alps, where the climate
produces enough summer heat to ripen Italy's most famous grape, Nebbiolo.
Nebbiolo is a late ripener that ages brilliantly, producing wine of
excellent acidity, high tannins, and rare subtlety, perfumed with aromas of
tar, rose, mint, chocolate, and licorice. Winexpert's Italian Piedmont
Nebbiolo d' Alba has a rich mouth-feel and spicy fruit flavours such as
cherries, violets, and black licorice that deliver the true character of the
grape, finishing with rich, chewy, deep and long-lasting flavour. Nebbiolo
is perfect with lamb, grilled steak, and rib-sticking stews as well as dry,
aged cheeses that may be too strong or distinctive for other wines. Retail:

final thoughts
The Buffalo Theory (or how we justify our hobby!) :: In one episode of
"Cheers", Cliff is seated at the bar describing the BUFFALO THEORY to his
buddy Norm. "...well you see Norm, it's like this...A heard of buffalo can
only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when that herd is hunted, it's
the lowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural
selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and
health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the
weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as
fast as the slowest brain cells. Now as we know, excessive intake of alcohol
kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the weaker brain cells, making
the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you
always feel smarter after a few beers."
