Subject: Surly - The Latest
Hello Surly Nation,
Let's see, what's new... Well, we are now up to 40 accounts in the Twin
Cities! The newest accounts are: all Twin Cities Old Chicago's, The
Craftsman, Punch Pizza - Uptown, Shelly's, Shakers, Campiello's, Elsie's,
The Sample Room, Beaujo's, Big Bucks, Barley Johns, St. Petersburg, Rix Bar
and Blondie's. Check our SURLY BARS page for more info.
We got some nice press from Jeremy Iggers, the Star Tribune food critic.
Check out this quote on a review of our favorite St. Paul bar, The Happy
Gnome. "As a self-confessed hophead, I was especially impressed by the Surly
Furious, from the newly opened Surly Brewing Co. in Brooklyn Center. It's an
extremely hoppy ale balanced by plenty of malty body." Great, he gets it! If
you stop by soon at the Happy Gnome, you might get a free tulip glass when
you order a Surly. Hurry, there is only a case of glasses. In other news, we
were able to get the news clip from Channel 12 up and running on our web
site. Check it out on the home page - it is listed under the date headline
of March 19.
All 9 local Old Chicago's are putting us on tap for their Home Town
Mini-Tours. To kick things off, Wednesday, 3/28, Todd will be at the OC
Downtown from 7-9pm, and Omar will be at the Minnetonka OC from 7-9pm. We
will also show up on future Wednesday nights at the OCs in Eagan and Uptown.
Stop by if you can.
Todd and I have been in the beer lab, working on our new beer. I think you
will like it - we do. It should be ready in 6-7 weeks at your favorite Surly
Bar. "What's it like," you ask? Come on, like we are gonna tell you now.
We have been preparing for a trip to the Gitchee Gumee Beerfest this weekend
and we are excited that we've been invited to some other big beer festivals
this summer. Stop by and say hi this weekend - the whole crew will be there.
See you at the bars,
Omar

Omar has told me that Old Chicago in EP will be serving Surly beer on
Wednesday as part of the Home Town Tour. I don't know which beer, maybe
both.
I'll be having lunch there and will let you know.

Beer Lovers,
These are the best of times, these are the worst of times.
As you probably know, smoking will be banned in all bars and restaurants in
Saint Paul at 12:01 a.m. March 31. I know many of you are excited that The
Pig and The Gnome will be smoke free and I'm fine with that. What I don't
like is the city council telling me how to run my business. Fix the stupid
potholes and leave me alone. So there.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox for now. To mark the end of several hundred years of
our personal freedoms, The Happy Gnome will be hosting a cigar smoker, The
Last Gasp, on Thursday, March 30 in the upstairs banquet room from 7:00 p.m.
to midnight. Join us for one last smoke, great conversation, food and
beverage. Our wine and spirits distributor will be providing a nice red and
white wine as well as Reyka vodka, Hendricks Gin, Milagro tequila, Balvenie
12 yr, Glenfiddich 15 yr, and Sailor Jerry rum. Your $20 cover charge gets
you 3 drink tickets each good for one of these products. We will also have
a nice appetizer buffet and cigars will be available for sale. Hope to see
you there.
Bell's Oberon will make its 2006 debut next Monday, March 27 at 8:00 p.m. at
The Happy Gnome. Pints of Bell's beers will be just $3 each from 8-11 and
the Bell's rep will be on hand with goodies like t-shirts, caps, key chains
and stuff. Nothing says spring like a pint of Oberon.
Friday, April 7 marks the 72nd anniversary of the end of prohibition in the
United States. To celebrate, our friends at Summit are planning an informal
pub crawl from The Muddy Pig to The Happy Gnome and the public is free to
join in. It's not a long crawl but with 44 draft lines who needs to go any
further? More details to follow.
Repeal of prohibition. Smoking ban. Hmmm..
Cheers,
Mark
This is the last call for group tickets for the Great Taste of the
Midwest. If you want to reserve tickets with our group, I need your check
for $30 made out to MHTG ("Madison Homebrew Tasting Guild") by April 1.
Send it to:
Al Boyce
3208 Edgewood Ave So
St. Louis Park, MN 55426
I will call the order in on April 3, so you can give me your check at the
MhBA Club meeting on Saturday, April 1 at the club meeting if you like.
The meeting is at the CPSP Hall on 383 Michigan St, St. Paul, from
Noon-3pm.
Thanks!

I neglected to give the start time - it's High Noon - that's 12:00 PM or
Noon for any native Minnesotans - if we can get in earlier to set up the
stuff. We'll try to fit in the back room so we don't have to leave at 2PM.
If we can't set up in time, then just meet me at Glockenspiel and we'll
pass the bowls of grain around. You can pour some good German beer on
top and we'll call it a 'meeting'. When we feel like going home, well,
we'll wait another hour or two, have some more beer and then, maybe,
wander home. Whatever!
Also, anyone who brings a monetary contribution for the unemployed
maltsters fund of Great Britain will be entered in a special competition
with a unique prize awarded. Details will be provided at the meeting on
April 1st. No, don't ask ahead of time, as The Prisoner said, "that,
would be telling".
See ya on April First! Oh, darn, my glass is empty, g'night!

Subject: [phc-club] Summit Scandia Ale NOW! - Summit ESB July!
Hello fellow Summit beer lovers!
There's a lot happening at Summit right now and into their 20th Anniversary
Celebration this Fall.
How about Scandia Ale and ESB for starters!

A Tribute to Fred
As we get ready to celebrate our 20th anniversary, I
think of the many people who have contributed to the success of Summit
Brewing Company. Frederich Hans Thomasser was essential to the evolution
of the brewery. His presence was also significant in my personal and
professional development. He was a solid friend, mentor and guide.
Fred, the son of a cooper, was born in New York City in
1917. He entered the brewing industry in 1935 as a brewer's apprentice
rather than as a cooper's apprentice because, in his words, "the brewers
looked so robust, jolly and healthy, whereas the coopers looked thin, pale
and somewhat drawn". After working for the Horton Brewery and the John
Eichler Brewery, Fred was awarded the Anton Schwarz scholarship to attend
the 1945 class of the United States Brewers Academy. Thereafter, Fred
joined the Christian Heurich Brewing Company in Washington, D.C. He served
as Master Brewer until the brewery closed in 1956 to make space for the
present site of the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.
Fred headed west in 1958. He landed in Saint Paul,
Minnesota, with the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company, a regional brewery with
sales of 270,000 barrels per year. Through his tenure as Master Brewer and
General Manager of Plant Operations, Fred increased the brewery's output to
900,000 barrels by 1975. Frequently, consolidating industries hold no
regard for an individual's expertise and talents. By 1976, Fred was forced
into early retirement after the G. Heileman Brewing Company acquired Jacob
Schmidt.
From the first moment after meeting Fred in 1983, I
discovered that he was a natural and powerful teacher - a teacher who was
extremely patient, thoughtful and thorough. Fred's mind was inventive and
detail oriented. He had that unique ability to illustrate the
complexities of brewing without being arrogant or egocentric. Fred was an
advocate of character, integrity, balance and intensity in beer and life.
I remember a conversation about the consciousness of
brewing. Fred was very concerned that enjoying beer had become an
unconscious or secondary activity - that is the consumption of beer was in
the background, not something the drinker was acutely aware of. He
proposed brewing for the conscious - so that the drinker was presented with
flavor. He also proposed brewing for the subconscious - so that the
drinker had that indescribable experience of "it tastes like more..." By
the end of the evening, it was very clear to me that beer tastes better in
the company of friends.
Thank you, Fred.

Upcoming Events
More News on our Twentieth Anniversary Year
As Mark mentioned in his column we are celebrating our
20th year in business. In late September of 1986, we sold our first keg to
Johnny's Bar in Saint Paul, directly across the street from our first
location on University Avenue. We all find it remarkable that twenty years
have past since that first exciting day so we are planning a party to
celebrate. On September 30th, 2006 , the brewery will move its headquarters
to Harriet Island to celebrate our 20th with a day of music and Summit
Beer. We call it...
Summit's Big Brew
We are busy making plans for the day and finding
home-grown talent to accompany our home-grown beer. We expect a lot of
surprises over the next several weeks as we get commitments from the bands
we have contacted. Stay tuned as we will first announce the bands on our
web site.
Other things that are happening during 2006 to celebrate
our anniversary include the introduction of Summit Extra Special Bitter.
Available July 1, Summit ESB will be brewed in the UK style with plenty of
interesting hops and a beautiful malt finish. Look for this beer in a
special 20th Anniversary twelve pack.
Finally, look for special neck straps on Summit beer
bottles commemorating our 20th year.
Brewing for a Cause:10 dollars, 10 breweries, 3 hours
Join "Brewing for a Cause" on March 30th from 7-10pm @
Whiskey Junction as we help raise funds for The Bridge. Who knew that
drinking great beer could help contribute funding to so many people in your
community!
The Bridge provides homeless and runaway youth in the
Twin Cities area with shelter, safety, and the hope for a better future.
We're open 24 hours a day for any youth in crisis, offering a safe place to
stay, with experienced counselors to address whatever situation landed them
on the street. Nearly one thousand young people turn to us for help each
year, as they cope with family conflicts, school problems, homelessness,
poverty, sexual exploitation, violence, neglect, and abandonment. All our
services are free, confidential, and available 24-hours a day.
Celebrate your rights, toast with a Summit!
On April 7, the brewery will acknowledge the 74th
Anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition. We encourage all beer lovers to
take a moment and try to imagine a time when the enjoyment of beer was not
something you could take for granted. Then, consider how life would change
if beer once again became illegal. Pretty grim, don't you agree?
So, let's toast the Repeal with a glass of Summit and
reflect on the wonderful pleasures beer provides.
News
Introducing Summit Scandia Ale....
The brewery is pleased to announce its third Limited
Release style, Summit Scandia Ale. Following its predecessors, Oatmeal
Stout and Amber, Summit Scandia is a draft only brew that will be first
available April 20th.
Scandia Ale is our interpretation of Belgian white ale.
This brew is spiced with coriander, bitter orange peel and a spice that
many Scandinavians are familiar with in their baking - cardamom. The use
of cardamom in this beer makes it very special and distinctive to our
region. The beer also has an effervescent, champagne-like carbonation and
is only partially filtered. Summit Scandia Ale is a perfect accompaniment
with many foods in general, but pairs exceptionally well with seafood.
Treat yourself to a pint and let us know what you think:

Dedicated Summit Fans throughout the Midwest praise great

My brother lives in Ohio now, but our family is from St.

Welcoming spring and our anticipated seasonal: Summit
Maibock by Horace Cunningham
Summit Maibock has an interesting history rooted in the
rapid development of styles post the Reinheitsgebot German Beer Purity Law
era. The Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516 requires that only four
ingredients be used in the brewing process; hops, water, malt, and yeast.
While the birthplace of this bock style is often credited
to be at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, there is significant brewing history
that pre-dates this.
It was the initiation of a competition by Duke
Maximillian I of Munich in 1612, to find the greatest brewer in Germany
that resulted in the style finding its way to the southern Bavarian town.
Elias Pichler, a first class brewer from the well-regarded northern brewing
region of Einbeck was invited to Hofbrauhaus by the Duke to teach the
Munchen brewers how to create this signature brew.
Einbeck was well known for its exceptional brewing
traditions and ideal climate for growing the finest hops. It was soon after
the legal requirement of hops used in all beers from Germany, that
highly-respected regional brewers realized not only the signature taste
that came from this ingredient, but also found that there were natural
preservative properties too. This was valued in the village of Einbeck,
situated near the North and Baltic Seas, because it was a major
export-trading region for Germany and produced a beer that exhibited very
good clarity, flavor stability, and traveled extremely well.
True to this lagered style, our Summit Maibock is brewed
in the colder winter and available in the spring months, incorporating
Munich and Pilsener two rowed malts to give a sweeter malt and caramel
flavor. It is also full bodied with a balanced hop flavor and displays a
sparkling amber color.
Salutations to the welcoming of Spring!
Maibock loyalist eagerly anticipates spring's arrival:
In the far Northern states, where the wind blows cold
A brutal frost humbles the strong and the bold
The sun's in retreat, the trees are all bare
There's nary a sound in the cool crisp air
The days are short, and the snow piled high
We greet a new year, and tell one goodbye
Don't go outside without choppers and boots
Thick woolly scarves or heavy snow suits
Some might consider the days a bit dreary
After 4 months who wouldn't be weary
But we skate on the ponds and ski down the slopes
With one thought in mind, one image of hope
With February comes an annual rite
A tradition to tell if spring is in sight
All 'round the Metro we keep our eyes peeled
We wait for the time the omen's revealed
This glorious symbol is not one of luck
Has nothing to do with a rat or woodchuck
It's a reliable signal on which we depend
It tells without fail, winter's nearing it's end
The idea sustains us all through the night
A beacon of hope, checkered blue and white
The image uplifts the sorriest sap
A sign in the window "Maibock on tap"
Yes the arrival of Maibock is all that it takes
To fill us with joy and thaw out our lakes
Great moments like this, you know are quite rare
So draw up a pint and pull up a chair
About the Author: Mark Sponholz, a New Ulm, MN Native
feels you should always support your local brewery. Now a resident of NE
Minneapolis, he prefers Summit Maibock to groundhogs, Spoon to the White
Stripes, snowboarding to skiing, Hemingway to Dickens, and Mini Coopers to
Hummers. When he's not at work engineering a better parking experience, he
can be found seeking his muse at establishments throughout the Twin Cities
area.

Greetings Chicago Beer Society,
My name is Paul Koeller and I am the coauthor of a book entitled "Brewed
With Style - The Story of the House of Heileman." This book was published in
late 2004 by the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Foundation. This 288
page hard cover book traces the history of the G. Heileman Brewery in La
Crosse, Wisconsin. It continues all the way up to and including the current
City Brewery in La Crosse. The book has over 100 photos, including 16 pages
of color photos. It also includes a list of over 400 brands that Heileman
sold over the years.
Heileman Old Style beer was a huge favorite in the Chicago area. I'm
assuming that many Chicago beer drinkers would be interested in this book.
Currently the book is not available in major book stores. It is primarily
being sold at City Brewery and other La Crosse area bookstores. I'm looking
for ways to find people in the Chicago area that would be interested in
purchasing a copy of the book. I found your web site and thought many of
your members might be interested in the book. Anything you can do to help
spread the word about our book will be greatly appreciated. Feel free to
