Subject: Upcoming Events!!
Hello Ale Stars,
Were still in the midst of summer, which is normally a quite period for
the
club, but its just been too long since we've gotten together so Ive come
up with a good excuse. I have recently become the proud owner of a real
British beer engine and it needs to be christened (yes, the club now has 2
Beer Engines). I have whipped up a Best Bitter, and all are invited to help
me break it in on Saturday, August 21st. The address is 5002 Oneida St. in
Duluth (218-525-1340) and well begin around the customary start time of
2:00 PMish. Well also have the grill fired up, so bring something to put
on
it for yourself and a side dish to share. And, if you have any home brew,
bring it along too. I was also thinking of brewing in the morning (why not
make a day of it), so if you'd be interested in joining, let me know.
Then as we move into fall, the real action starts NAS events and meetings:
September 25th will be the Traditional Der Hoag Oktoberfest. Yes, the great
lawn of the Hoag family estate will kick off the Oktoberfest season along
with the usual dancing, merriment and games of chance. Oh yeah, and a lot
of
beer drinking. Be sure to reserve the 25th of September on your calendar.
The Hoags reside at 5426 BearTrap Rd in Saginaw, MN (218-729-6302). Ill
get you more details as the date approaches, but for now, dig out your
lederhosen so youll be ready.
Oktober 21st 24th will be the Fall beer weekend hosted by Greg and Barb
Gecas at Hestons Resort on the Gunflint Trail. The evening of the 21st will
be the traditional "Pub Night" and starting of the festivities. Hestons now
has a brick bread oven, so the theme for the group meal on Saturday night
will be....PIZZAS!!!! Plan to bring your favorite fixins for Brick Oven
Baked Pizzas (this should be real interesting). Be sure to contact Barb and
Greg soon to reserve your spot (218-388-2243).
The November meeting will be held at the home of Bryn Jacobson and Boreal
Bicycles. Time and date TBA.
Other beer events in the region:
- This Saturday, August 14th is the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison,
WI. However, the event is sold out, so if you don't have tickets, there's
always eBay.
- September 18th will be the second annual Big Lake Brew Fest at the
Wessman
Arena on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Superior. The event
organizers are looking for volunteers from the home brew community to
assist
the brewers in setting up and serving during the event. It will be a great
way to meet a professional brewer, gain some brewing knowledge and maybe
even strike up a working relationship. I mentioned this opportunity in a
past correspondence and a number of members have responded. But there are
still some spots available, so if youre interested (you dont have to be a
member, all home brewers are welcome), send me an e-mail and well get you
matched up with a brewer.
- The 2004 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition is underway, and
you're
invited to enter your homebrewed Beer, Mead and Cider! (Must be a
Minnesota
resident to enter - sorry North Dakotans and Wisconsinites) Deadline for
entry is August 18, 2004. Judging will take place on Aug 21, 2004 on the
weekend before the Fair starts, at the Fairgrounds. Awards Ceremony is at
the Fair on Aug 28, 2004. Help is also needed with judging - you can
register your beers and register for judging online. See
http://www.mnbrewers.com/events/mnfair for more details.
- The Fellowship of Oklahoma Ale Makers (FOAM) invites you to enter, to
judge, and to participate in FOAM Cup 2004. The entry window for this
BJCP-certified competition is September 10-17, with judging set for
September 24 and 25 in Tulsa., OK. The FOAM Cup is part of the High Plains
Brewer Competition. It is the fourth of six High Plains events this year.
Individual and club points earned at FOAM Cup will count toward the 2004
High Plains Brewer of the Year, and Club of the Year awards. Please ship or
deliver your entries to the Mecca Coffee Company in Tulsa, OK to arrive
between September 10 and 17, 2004. The fee for everybody is $6 per entry.
Get all of the details, rules, and entry forms at the FOAM web site,
www.alemakers.com.
Cheers!
Steve

Suds are flying: Chicago's best-known local brewery,
Goose Island Brewing Co., is locked in a nasty legal
fight with its former distributor, who claims that the
brewery's finances are shaky.
United States Beverage LLC sued Goose in Cook County
Circuit Court, claiming that the brewer unfairly
terminated its relationship with the distributor
earlier this year.
Goose, whose best-selling brand is Honker's Ale,
operates a brewpub in Wrigleyville and a small West
Side brewery. Goose's flagship microbrewery at 1800 N.
Clybourn Ave. is owned separately by Goose founder
John Hall.
In its suit, USB says that Goose Island's business has
diminished and that it will lose its $2.55 million
credit facility with LaSalle Bank effective in
October. The brewery confirmed that its relationship
with LaSalle is ending, but Hall said it is about to
sign on with a new lender and disputed USB's
assertions that it is in financial trouble.
Still, the suit gives a rare glimpse into the
challenges facing small brewers as they fight for
drinkers in the slow-growing microbrewery industry.
According to Information Resources Inc., Goose Island
had a 29 percent share of the Chicago microbrew market
last year, but sales slipped 7.4 percent, to $2.15
million. Its market share slipped more than 3 percent.
(The figures don't include on-premise beer sales.)
Hall said Friday that the company this year was
growing "double digits" and that he expected to have a
good year. It also helps that most Cubs games are sold
out and the Wrigleyville location is doing well.
Much of this fight is about who didn't do their part
in building the business.
USB signed on as Goose's distributor in 2000, paying
Goose $1 million. USB also says that it agreed to
bring in other subcontracting deals to help bring in
more revenue. So USB invested $500,000 more into
Goose's facilities so that it could begin producing
Hooper's Hooch, a malt beverage.
Hall said it was USB's promise that Hooper's would be
a huge seller and would help utilize excess brewing
capacity at its West Side plant. But Hooper's Hooch
production never reached expected levels.
"That really hurt us from a business standpoint," Hall
said.
According to the suit, by November 2003 Goose
complained of financial problems and "requested more
production business from USB." So USB moved production
of its Slo beer brand to Goose.
On April 2, Goose sent a letter to USB stating that it
was terminating the contract with USB in 90 days,
saying that USB didn't live up to its end of the
bargain.
Hall maintains Goose is close to agreements with other
companies to make up for the lost production.

To all,
Thanks for the kind messages and considerate thoughts. My mom passed away this morning.
Hope the Mead Day today was fun and festive. Next year, I would like to host if possible.
By the way, my mom did enjoy some homebrew when she was in good health, in particular a Scotch ale, and the Smoked Porter I have made some time ago.
Thanks for all your friendship and support,
Steve

Interesting question about recirculation. I have a pump also but have never found a great need to recirculate. My mashtun is a stock pot with direct fire. I use my pump for counterflow cooling flow and for initial mash in to lift from the hot liquor kettle into the mash tun.
If I was going to recirculate with a rims or herms or some sort of external heating system, I would be careful to avoid oxygen uptake. Possibly a distribution manifold slightly below the surface of the mash? I would consider metal or plastic in a ring or rectangular shape with a series of holes pointing inward.

I bought one of those nifty pumps. When do people start the
recirculation? Right from dough-in or when you are stepping up the temp
to sparge.
When you run the wort back into the grain bed, do you run it straight
from the hose or is there some best way to let the wort in without
drilling a hole into the grain bed.

THE SEXY SOUND OF BEER
An acoustics expert in Germany says the sound a bottle opening makes can
ignite your taste buds. It's not just the thought of drinking beer, but the
actual tones you hear that make you thirsty. Some breweries take Friedrich
Bluter, who runs Synotec, seriously enough that they've hired him as a
consultant. Bluter believes that the design of a bottle can make all the
difference to the sound the beer makes when poured; a sound he says can make
the pouring of beer an almost sexual experience for the drinker. "The
shorter
the distance between bottle belly and neck, the more harmonious and more
erotic the beer sounds when it is poured out," Bluter said. Bluter reckons
that these rules of attraction have helped some beers prosper while others
have struggled. For instance, the sound of Bavarian beer being poured is
much
more arousing than the sound of the lighter Koelsch-style beer. And this can
be improved upon, according to Bluter. "If the brewers manage to generate
deep, slow vibrations as heard with the Czech Pilsner, their beer could
become even more successful."
