The Fall 2004 BJCP Class will be starting Sept 2 - if there is enough interest. Kris England reports that so far there are only 2 definite brewers signed up. WRITE KRIS TODAY to reserve your spot if you're interested in attending. NOTE: THIS IS NOT RESTRICTED TO MHBA OR SPHC BREWERS - anyone can attend! We especially look forward to meeting some brewers from the Rum River Wort Hogs, the CloudyTown Brewers, the Boreal Brewers, and the Prairie Home Brewing Companions!
The Beer Judge Certification class is not only a good way to learn about beer judging, it's a great way to become a better brewer too. It's also a fun way to get to know other brewers in the club. PLUS, the BJCP has just released their 2004 edition of the Beer Style Guidelines, including 18 NEW STYLES. So even if you've taken the class before, it would be good to take it again to learn about these new styles, and the changes that have been made to the old ones.
The class will last 13 weeks, and is FREE! except for the cost of the exam - $50 for first-time exam takers, $30 for a full retake, and $15 for a partial retake. This is surely one of the best deals on the planet right now!
Kris' email is: engla008(a)umn.edu. Write him TODAY to reserve your spot in the class!
Here is Kris' details about the class:

==========================
Where: Minneapolis, 214 W 15th St (right next to Loring Park)
When: Thurs 6pm -
Details:
The course will start Thursday Sept 2nd and the test will be Dec 12th. There is no fee for the course but you will need to pay up front for your test costs. Its $50 for first time test takers and $15 for the written or tasting portion separately. The course will be divided into 13 weeks coinciding with all of the club only competitions. This class, as with the last one I ran, is promised to be filled with fun and a little debauchery. You will learn a ton of new stuff, in addition to a plethora of new colorful new words and phrases. However, we are serious when we are teaching and you will all be well prepared for the exam in December. This class will focus much more on actual judging than the previous ones have so novices and masters alike will be able to hone their skills.
NOTE:
My place is much smaller than places we have had in the past. The space is limited so its on a first come, rather email basis. Let me know if you are interested or have any more questions.

Each day when the brewery clock hits 3:30 I look out and see John enter the Town Hall, newspaper and magazines neatly rolled under his arm. He takes his normal position at the end of the bar and orders his usual IPA...then another...and another....and...you get the idea. This ritual and his colorful banter has turned John into one of our family. This Sunday marks a special day in John's life, he made it to retirement!
Stop in and help celebrate John's accomplishment(s) at his retirement party this Sunday beginning at 4:00 pm. Tell a story, remember when, or simply hoist a pint with John.
Some food will be provided and in honor of John's new found eternal happy hour...happy hour prices will apply for pints!
Cheers
Sorry about the last minute invite. I knew Al was working on contest stuff so it was not a great time so maybe this update will help (or hinder, or infuriate, or (your advertisement here).
I always enjoy the start of the brewing season and last evening was a great time. Everything was ready to rock and roll and all I had to do was heat the water. Started mashing at 5:30 and knocked off at 10. It was an extremely rapid all grain batch and I just refused to worry about stuff.
Pickle Barrel Porter had an OG of 1.076 which is a little short of the estimate but exactly correct by the recipe. Ended up with 7 hop additions including first wort and hop back. Used pellet and whole hops so the sludge on the kettle bottom was challenging but the high power pump was able to pull those suckers through the impeller with minimum delay.
The brown malt has less than average extract but it was anticipated.

Thanks to everyone who came over to help pick a Wheat Beer to represent the
MhBA in the AHA Club-Only competition this month. Jesse and Sarah
Stremchka, Jonathan Crist, Steve Piatz, John Longballa, Sean Hewitt, Doug
(sorry Doug, forgot your last name) and I tried 5 homebrewed Bavarian
Weizens and 4 Weizenbocks, after calibrating on Hacker Pschorr, Paulaner,
and a couple other commercial weizens, and an Aventinus Weizenbock. It was
a close decision, and after much deliberation my Bavarian Weizen was picked
to represent the club.
Thanks to Jesse, Steve, Thomas Eibner (and me!) for entering beers!
Next AHA Club-Only is BJCP Category 23 (1999 guidelines) SMOKE Beers. The
competition will be in October, and we will pick a beer to represent our
club at my place on Tues, Sept 21. START BREWING NOW!!!

Guys and Gals, This is a last minute invite to a brew-a-rama tonight at my place. The brew starts late and ends really late. I decided to take advantage of the cool weather and brew an ale.
The name "Pickle Barrel Porter" was coined as I opened up the plastic bucket of base malt and noticed a faint but discernable aroma of dill. The pail was previously used for commercial pickles. You'll have to wait and see if the aroma transfers into the beverage.
The beer is big. It should weigh in around 1.080 - 1.090 and the IBU's are up there too. Base malt is commercial with home roasted brown, store bought black and store bought crystal 80. Hops include Fuggles (a bunch of fuggles) for the prime charge followed by East Kent Golding for flavor, flavor, and aroma. So far, there will be about 4 hop additions. Fell free to add more hops as the spirit moves you.
So I am finally getting back on track - brewing totally out of any style guidelines although following a presumptuous porter recipe from Brew. This dark porter that may go exceptionally well with bar pickles.
Call or stop by if you are interested. Knock out should occur between 10-11. Come around back or call me on the phone.

It's now less than 2 weeks away, the 7th Annual or 8th Annual (I don't
know - but it's the 8th one) Stock House Homebrew Fest.
August 21st, 5:00pm.
1472 Como Avenue
St. Paul, MN
The party has evloved over the years - the first one was a bunch of
bottled homebrew in a fridge in my garage. Now it's 13+ taps spread all
over the estate (garage and basement). There may even be a couple guest
brews from this year's UMMO BOS winner Thomas Eibner (now you're on the
spot Thomas).
I'm a little short on them, but you may even be able to talk me out of a
couple meads (they're young, but almost drinkable)!
May start a little earlier for the State Fair judges, If all the judging
is finished!
Don't forget to enter beers and sign up to judge (if you can ) the MN
Sate Fair Homebrew Competition.
Spounces, friends, supervised children welcome.
Stop by if you want to try a few shabby homebrews.

Why enter a looser?
Sometimes beers are perceived differently by various people. For
instance, I had entered a Pale Ale in Georgia and Nevada competitions
which were only a week apart. The Georgia judges gave it a 23, the
Nevada judges gave it a 41 and first place. Ironically, the score sheet
comments were very similar and no major flaws were found. I've
experienced this in our local competitions as well.
Just because someone doesn't like a particular beer, doesn't make it a
bad beer.
Put it up, you never know what can happen.
