Hi Brewers!
What a difference a day makes. Bob had a great day today in Rehab and was able to walk the entire circumference of the PT dept ( with the help of a quad cane and 1 therapist)! He was fitted for a brace for his R leg to help the knee from hyper- extending and to support his R foot. That should help considerably with his walking. Speech is still a big challenge, but he is at least attempting to make sounds and form his lips. A+ for attitude and determination. Therapy really wipes him out in the afternoon, and he sleeps until supper. He has started on pureed foods and cleans the old plate as good as our golden retreiver!! Good appetite and I notice him eye balling the beer bouquet alot. I am sure he is looking forward to the day he can endulge at least a few ounces of the tasty brew staring at him. Thanks to whomever brought the porter, stout and pale ale for Bob. I did not see a name on the bag, but I know it was someone from the Club. I ran some names past Bob and he smiled, but I still don't know for sure. Thanks, again. I need to attend a baby shower for the Grandson on Sunday in Illinois, so if anyone has a chance to pop in to say hi to Bob, I'm sure he would love to see a familar face. He has 0 therapy on Sunday, so he should be well rested. Feel free to ask him yes and no questions and talk as much as you like. He is doing so much better with the appropriateness of his responses, and it is good therapy. Sometimes he answers yes automatically, but will correct if given a minute and yes is not a correct answer. You guys are great!! Bob and I thank you for your support and well wishes.

Nathaniel Energy has a 51% ownership interest in a helium and gas processing
facility in Keyes, Oklahoma. This facility produces 2,000,000 mcf (thousand
cubic feet) of natural gas annually, 5,500 mcf of natural gas daily and
3,600 gallons of natural gas liquids daily. A more detailed ownership
description of our Keyes operation is contained under the heading "Corporate
History" below. Nathaniel Energy also acquired a 130-mile pipeline that
collects natural gas for the plant from over 50 gas wells. The acquisition
included a take-and-pay contract with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. for
the helium production and an operating agreement with Colorado Interstate
Gas Company for the sale of processed natural gas. The natural gas liquids
recovered by the plant are sold to various parties.

How big a boil volume do you have? Do you use immersion chilling? If your
kettle is big enough, you could chill IN THE KETTLE, then transfer directly
to your carboy. One less transfer - one less chance for infection.

Subject: Glass vs Plastic
As Rick mentioned in one of his emails, there are many opinions on glass vs
plastic. It's just like at the grocery store - paper or plastic.
I enjoy seeing activity in the airlock, then I know fermentation is taking
place. It would be interesting to carry a full glass carboy downstairs and
I don't think I would want to be around if it ever decided to meet the
concrete floor by accident.
At my next brew session, I will probably cool in plastic (much easier to
carry plastic bucket downstairs), then rack to class for fermentation.
Thanks to all for your info.

Subject: Big Lake Brew Fest
Hello Ale Stars,
Don Hoag is on the planning committee for the Big Lake Brewfest, which is a
new fest that started last September in Superior WI. Last year it was
outside under a tent on Barkers Island. This year it will be on Sept 18th
at Wessman Arena, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Superior,
very similar to Gitchee Gumee fest in March.
The organizers of this event would like to recruit homebrewers to work as
volunteers at the event. If you volunteer, you will be assigned to help a
specific brewer, be there early enough to help them unload, set up, serve
their beer if they need help or want a break, make sure they have ice,
water
(or get this stuff as needed). This is a great way to get to know a
brewer,
and to get into the event for free (I'm sold).
Anyone who is interested in joining us, send me an e-mail
(northernalestars(a)hotmail.com) and Don will get in touch with you.
Cheers!
Steve Daiken
Secretary, Northern Ale Stars

After using plastic for my primary fermentation vessel for a few years, I have found out the hard way that the top no longer seals properly and during fermentation, there is no activity in the airlock.
I am going to start using our glass carboy for primary and secondary to assure a proper seal takes place.
While I will cool the wert down in plastic, my question is, at what temperture is it safe to transfer the wert to the glass carboy without causing damage to the glass? (..or should I not worry about this?..)
Thanks!
