Our homebrew contest is coming up in about a month.
We need your help to make this a success. Last year we had about 170
entries, which topped the previous year's 150. This year we expect to have
more than 200 entries.
Surf on over to http://mnbrewers.com/mashout to sign up to judge or steward.
Remember, all volunteers will get breakfast and lunch for the saturday
judging session. Plus you'll get a complementary bottle of foreign extra
stout brewed up by Curt Stock from a Steve Piatz recipe.
Don't forget the pub crawl on May 21: $30, a bus, 4 pubs, a free glass.

My neighbor in Minnetonka has a couple deals that may be of interest to
homebrewers.
Free: stainless steel corner lab sink and counter with foot-pedal
controls.
$1/square ft: 30-40 slabs of granite in various colors, sizes and
thicknesses, salvaged from construction projects. I have one as a
platform for my brew kettle, and I've used a smaller one for a tabletop.
Give me a call at home for more details or directions.

Congrats to Curt "Froo Froo" Stock, who kicked butt in Alaska. Now if he could just learn to make beer.

Subject: Re: Mead Club only?
The first National AHA competition ever to be held in Alaska was a smashing success. In spite of skepticism as to the level of participation Alaska would receive, the Great Northern Brewers Club received 59 entries from 28 different states and Canada. This is the most entries received this year (possibly ever) for an AHA National Club Only Competition.
BJCP certified judges traveled from as far as Michigan, Chicago, and Oklahoma to attend the judging. The Best-of-Show panel was comprised of many esteemed mead-makers including a former National Mead Maker of the Year, Steve Schmitt, and also Ken Schramm, founder of the Mazer Cup and author of The Complete Maker.
The quality of the meads was exceptional. A double blind tasting was held and the meads advancing to Best-of-Show were judged three times before a winner was picked. And the winners are
1st Place, Best-of-Show
Curt & Kathy Stock
St. Paul Homebrewers Club
Other Fruit Melomel (Strawberry Banana Mead)
Titled: Strawbana Cabana
2nd Place
Eva Brese
Niagara Association of Homebrewers
Juniper Metheglin
3rd Place
Al Hazan
Brewers United Zany Zymurgists (BUZZ)
Cyser
Titled: Alsale Cyser #11
For their outstanding efforts, the winners will receive engraved gold plated gold-pans.
The Best-of-Show winners will also receive an Oosik tap handle (I hope you looked it up). Curt and Kathy were contacted after the judging and congratulated for their success. I told Curt someone else would like to congratulate him and asked if had ever heard of Ken Schramm. He responded, Heck yes! I bought his book last year and thats when I first started making meads! Be on the lookout for awesome meads from the St. Paul area.
The Great Northern Brewers Club would like to thank all the entrants. We enjoyed hosting and hope to do it annually. Please contact the AHA Board of Directors with your support for making this an annual event.
Mead induced warm regards,
Pete Devaris
