Has anyone ever experimented with matching a varietal honey with the fruit
from the source plant? For example, making a blueberry melomel with
blueberry honey, a raspberry melomel with raspberry honey, etc...?
It's been suggested to me that the fruit would just overwhelm any aromatics
from the varietal honey, which makes me think I should just use clover honey
for any melomels.

I can attest to this endorsement as well. The best bacon I have EVER had.
Worth driving 100 miles for. And if you're into raw meat and eggs, it's one of
the few places that sells steak tartare anymore.

Greetings,
Speaking of Grilling and such. On my last trip to
Mankato/New Ulm, I stopped at Schmidts Meat Market
in Nicollet. I can highly recommend the beer sticks,
the garlic sausage and the bacon.
The steaks, brats, jaegers, polish, etc. also looked good.
Not sure about their saturday hours. I was there on a
weekday afternoon.
BTW, you go through Nicollet if you turn right/west off of
169 on the south edge of St. Peter. It's a short cut over to
New Ulm that bypasses Mankato. Also at the south end of St. Peter
is Hwy 22, aka the Road to/by Kasota, Mid America Brewing and
also the more direct route to Bandana Brewing. Hwy 22 is a left off
of 169. It runs mostly due south. Turn right/west on Cnty Hwy 41
if memory serves.
Happy Trails, YMMV, Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Jim

Lucky Friday is tomorrow. Here are some FAQ's.
How do I get there? Good question. Drive down 169 towards Mankato.
After you cross the Blue Earth River and proceed down a short incline,
turn right at Hawley Street (north). Turn left on Main Street (soon to
be Olive) and follow Main Olive to the campground.
When do I show up? Slightly after you arrive but hopefully in the
early afternoon.
What should I bring? Normal camping equipment, bug avoidance stuff,
money, beer, favorite chair, beer glass, and a smile.
What do we do after we get setup? On Friday evening around 5:15, we
levitate to Bandana Brewing and visit Dave Berg's new location.
Likely, there will be some beer, food, a tour, and then return to the
campground.
What does Dave have on Tap? Gold, Red, Brown, Pale, and the first
brewer's special: Kolsch
What if I arrive late? If you RSVP'ed we will save you a site. We
hope to meet you at Bandana 302 N Plainview Ave. From hwy 22, turn
right (SW) at Madison, left at Madison, go to Victory and turn left
What's the Saturday morning event about and how can I get up so early?
When was the last time you heard the tune Revile, played by a
professional bugler? Now imagine an armature using a broken bugle.
Strong coffee anyone? Dave Berg has set up a tour of Mid-America and
this company supplies a bunch of stuff to the commercial brewing
community. Dave recommends the tour and I believe you will be pleased
and slightly awed by the opportunity.
Mid America is in Kasota which is just a few miles north of Mankato.
What if I can't make it until Saturday around 1:00? If you drive down
on Saturday, meet us in New Ulm at the Schells Brewery.
What else are you going to do? Dave Cox has an interesting back-roads
route between New Ulm and Mankato and it conveniently passes by Ted's
brothers winery. If anyone is interesting in another tour, this may be
a nice stopping off location.
Is there more? Sure, when we roll up the events, we pack em in.
Saturday evening we will have a small BBQ back at the campground. We do
have a webber kettle (yep, one of the Cocako storm survivors) and will
be heating it up later in the afternoon. We will likely do some Chicken
or Burgers, or whatever you pick up from the store and will have the BBQ
equipment and charcoal.
Wow, this sounds like a great week-end. What else can I do?
Show up, thank the hosts and tour guides, provide them with beer, and
have a great time.
Hope to see you this week-end. Swally is bringing his super jockey
box
cooler.

Here's info on National Mead Day. I believe Chris Hadden is organizing an

Saturday, August 2, 2003
The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) Mead Day is a national event to
help increase camaraderie among homebrewers and meadmakers and introduce or
reintroduce the meadmaking hobby.
Each year on the first Saturday in August, homebrewers around the nation
are
encouraged to invite non-brewing and brewing friends and family to
celebrate
by making mead.
Before the event, participants that are planning Mead Day events, register
their site on this web site. These registered sites help the American
Homebrewers Association track how many participants celebrated the event.
2003 event results will be posted a few weeks after August 2.

Good morning campers. (free beer if you can name the old song with
those lyrics)
Lucky Friday is only two days away. Here is an update about the
week-end events.
Friday afternoon travel down to Mankato and set up beer camp at the
city campground (Land of Memories)
Friday afternoon 5:15 Move the group to Bandana Brewing and visit Dave
Berg's new location. Continue with the visit, dinner, tour and
eventually return to the campground.
Saturday morning 9:30 am. Do I need to bring my bugle? Folks, we have
an interesting tour set up (thanks to Dave) of Mid-America. Mid-America
supplies a bunch of stuff to the commercial brewing community. Although
they likely will not be selling small lots of grain, the tour will be
very interesting insight into the business of malt and brewing supply
management.
Saturday (noonish:30) Depart from campground to Schells.
Saturday 1:00 Tour Schells and meet other members driving out for the
day.
Saturday later: We have an interesting side trip to a winery owned by
Ted's brother. Any members wishing to take the side trip, please join
us. Dave Cox will have details about the route. Please see him at
Schells.
Saturday much later: You know how this advanced planning works now
don't you and you remember where you left your tent?
Hope to see you this week-end. Swally is bringing his super jockey box
cooler.
Happy trails
