It is ok to bring a soda keg of some Maibock I brewed this past spring.
I have about a gallon or two left. Also it's not cold (been sitting in
the basement - 60's), does anyone mind?

Mr Oftel asked an interesting question about making a small beer from the
second runnings of Old LS. Alas, I only have one kettle, so it went down
the drain. By the way, the "last" runnings were 15 P or so, so I'm not
sure how small of a beer it would have been!

Greetings,
Don't forget the MHBA meeting this Saturday at Water Tower Brewing.
1-4pm
12200 Singletree Lane
Eden Prairie, MN
For the last two years Dave Berg provided exceptional fall weather for one
last use of the patio. If we're lucky this year......
Another upcoming event is the MHBA Holiday Pot-Luck party on Friday,
November 30, 6-10pm at:
CSPS Hall
383 Michigan St
St Paul, MN
Along with great food, doorprizes, and homebrew exchange, we will have a
Peoples Choice Competition.
Here are the Categories, Rules,? and How to enter.
There are 2 categories this year:
1. Most Popular Homebrew
The style is Winter Warmers/Holiday Brews
Judging will be based on the following criteria.
The style is not any specific BJCP category. It should be similar to the
commercial "winter warmer/holiday beers". This can include strong beers,
fruit beers, spice beers, spiced ciders, and meads.
A holiday theme with an Interesting/Imaginative/Humorous/Antique
Container/Dispenser. Homebrew must be included as part of any entry. The
"system" must function and dispense the contents.
Labels, if any, should also be in keeping with the holiday spirit and must
be affixed to a container that includes homebrew.
Stories about your brew with a holiday theme are also encouraged.
The competition will be peoples choice. You may enter any type of homebrew,
in any container, in any quantity, but keep in mind that meeting all four of
the above criteria will improve your chances of winning. The amount you
enter will also influence the judges. The more judges tasting your entry,
the more chances you have of winning.
2. Best Food Item
Must include beer/cider/mead as an ingredient. A recipe is
required.
To enter:
Bring as many entries as you wish to the CSPS hall on
Friday, Nov 30, 6-10pm. Names on entries are discouraged but accepted if
you need to buy votes or influence judges.
Judging:
Anyone in attendance may judge by filling out 1 ballot.
Schmoosing other judges is acceptable. Ballots will be collected after we
eat and awards will be presented shortly after.
Prizes:
Yes. MHBA board members will be the competition committee and will resolve
all disputes and basically "wing it" as we go. You must be a member to win a
prize.
See you there!
Mike Moranz, President
Minnesota Home Brewers Association
Thanks to all for a number of contributions this month. In particular,
Steve Hamburg, Whispering Jeff Platt, and Marty Nachel. See everyone
later at da Goose.

White. I haven't played yet myself, but the basic goal
is to collect the ingredients needed to make different
styles of beer and then win awards at competitions. If
the ballgame gets boring, maybe we'll have time for a
game . . .

Is the meeting Saturday really at 1:00? Last year I showed up at 1:00 only to
find that WTB didn't open until 2:00. Luckily, Dave was working and was kind
enough to let me in to hang out and drink alone for an hour (actually, he was
drinking soda, but you know what I mean)

November.
Please contact me if you have beer to bring to the Renaissance Festival
Competition. We'll need about 20 gallons. I whipped up a quick 5 gal batch
of English Mild on Sunday and have about 3 gallons of american brown in the
cellar. As dedicated club members I know you won't embarass me with a
shortage of beer. We can arrange for me to even haul it out for you.
See you out there!

This meeting repeats starting on (if the date occurs on a weekend the
meeting ).
Just a quick thanks to the board members who assisted with our brewing event last evening. In about 4 hours, we brewed up a double batch of "Big Butt-O-Honey Porter" using the beer kit supplied from our friends in North Dakota. Assistants included Mike Swally and Barb, Mike Moranz, and Dr. Jim.
The event went quite smoothly with no major accidents, spills, or clogged pipes or fittings and BBOHP is fermenting very rapidly requiring temporary installation of blow off tubes.
The event also included discussion and event planning for the Christmas party, advanced planning for the February officer elections, and planning and discussions about future meetings and the all important Campout. Remember, this year, the MHBA hosts the statewide campout and you better plan on having fun!
Numerous house beers were available on tap and in bottles and other varieties were specially delivered for the event. Catering, provided by a unnamed pizza delivery service, provided a thoroughly mediocre and slightly warm pizza to a hungry crowd.
Please give some thought about helping your club by volunteering for a prestigious position. Contact any of the club officers for more information.
May your bubbles turn into warm smiles as the weather turns cool.
Rick Oftel
My previous posting with the keg info was meant to motivate someone out
there to organize a purchase if anyone is interested. I've gotten some
e-mails expressing interest but don't have the time to check this out. If
someone can coordinate a purchase please post your contact info for
everyone.
Thanks.
Mike Moranz, President
Minnesota Home Brewers Association
There are STILL very few American-made Altbiers that are any good. So
the admonition to buy a plane ticket, in my 1994 Zymurgy article, still
holds. Air fares may never be lower than these:
o Dusseldorf Altbier in the actual Altstadt - $290 RT
o Real English ale in an actual London pub - $250 RT
Fares are round trip on non-stop flights from Chicago on United. See
united.com for restrictions etc.
