Well, it arrived. Cooler weather brings out the kettles, malt, hops,
tubes, pumps, and machinery.....all that stuff we use to produce one of
our favorite fermented beverages. I already told a sorry story about a
PITA porter and I am glad to report that not only did it turn out very
well, but the series of humorous events caused a number of new upgrades
in my basement brewery.
Speaking about basement breweries, a few years ago I inquired and
suggested that a number of us open up our breweries to other homebrewers
so we could visit either on a brew day or a convenient afternoon. Yes I
know, some of us like to brew before the rest of us get up on Saturday
but this too can change.
If anyone in the MHBA is interested in visiting other brewers or
breweries, we need to get a little organized. I will bring a sign up
sheet to the BIG SWAP MEET AND BELGIAN JUDGING EVENT which occurs next
Saturday (October 5, 2002) at the CSPS hall in St. Paul.
So plan on attending the meeting. Think about brewing and sign up on
the sheet if you are interested in attending. Visiting a brewery is
very informal and as you all know, when the liquid is boiling, thing can
happen. The best thing about visiting other breweries is that every
time you visit a brewery, you should always take something home. This
means you learn something useful - ok? Every brewery tour and brewer
both professional and amateur has a wealth of knowledge that they will
gladly share and all you have to do is to ask! Such a deal.
So see me at the meeting. Fill out the information on the sign up
sheet. May the road below meet your feet as you climb the hill of
knowledge.

The Minnesota Home Brewers Association will again be offering the
Beer Judge Certification Program classes this coming winter. If
you are interested in taking the course, please drop me a note at
alboyce(a)bigfoot.com.
The class consists of 14 consecutive Thursdays, from 6-10pm. Each
week we discuss and learn about a specific technical brewing topic,
as well as taste and discuss specific beer styles, both commercial
"classic" examples of the style as well as homebrewed examples.
Each week we will be judging at least one beer, complete with
scoresheets, to improve our judging and feedback abilities.
Last year, about 14 people took the class, and about seven of those
took the certification exam, all of whom passed! I'm sure everyone
who took the class, even those who didn't take the test, would agree
that not only did they learn about beer judging, but they also
became better brewers.
We also need homebrewed examples of all of these styles of beer
If you have a couple of bottles of the style for the week that
you would be willing to share with the class, please bring it
if you can make it, or drop it off with one of the class attendees.
We always have a lot of fun! If you want to learn about beer and
brewing - come join us!

Locations will be sent out to those signed up for the class.
I have a "date" with Webber's Orchard for Saturday October 19 to pick
windfalls and press apples.
This is the MhBA apple pressing event for 2002. You don't need to let me
know about the Webber pressing, but a warm feeling is always nice to know.
I suspect I will be out there picking/pressing from 10am 'til 3pm. Deb is
asking for $2/gal.
For those favoring Minnesota Harvest non-pasteurized apple cider, my
suggestion is to get you
orders back to me and I will pick it up for the meeting at Water Tower Brewery.
BTW, this is obviously an either/or situation, you can do one, the other,
both or none.

Greetings again.
Last reminder for this Saturdays MHBA meeting at the CSPS hall. Bring any equipment or ingredients identified with your name and your price for the swap meet. Some interesting things have shown up in the past so bring some cash too. We'll get set up, have a short meeting, then we'll break into groups for judging the Belgians.
We should have about 30 entries to judge according to normal BJCP procedures. We'll need a minimum of 16 judges from novice to expert experience. If you've never judged before, this will be the chance to participate and learn a little about the process. We'll also need some stewards if you'd like to give that a try.
The beers will be Dubbels, Tripels, Strong Golden Ales, and Strong Dark Ales. No need to let me know if you're coming. Show up at 1:00 pm and we'll get as many beers judged as we can handle before 5:00pm.
See you there!
