Looking to improve your scores on the BJCP written or tasting exams? I
still have 7 tasting and 6 written seats left for the regional open BJCP
exam on Sunday, Sept 13.
The written exam doesn't get offered very often any more, so if you are
thinking that you'd like to retake that, now might be a good time. (The
next written retake won't be until next September.) Reminder: You need to
have 10 judging points and an 80 or better on your tasting exam as a
prerequisite.
To take the tasting exam for the first time, you must have passed the online
exam. There are no prerequisites for a retake of the tasting exam.
Send me an email if you are interested.
Please pass this along to members of your clubs!
Thanks!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Summit releases Unchained Series 16: Herkulean Woods
A lager brewed with Minnesota maple syrup and spruce tips
ST. PAUL, Minn. – (August 13, 2014) – Summit Brewing Company today announces the release of Herkulean Woods, a lager brewed with maple syrup and spruce tips and the 16th beer in the limited release Unchained Series. It will be available on draught and in 6-pack bottles the week of August 18.
Herkulean Woods is the first Unchained beer from new brewer Christian Dixon. Christian has been with the brewery since 2009, but was recently promoted to the brewing team after completing the Siebel Institute Associate in Brewing program. In his first effort, Christian has brought us a beer that would make Paul Bunyan proud, inspired by the natural beauty and ingredients of the upper Midwest. “Herkulean Woods is going to be a unique beer, with a very bold flavor profile that will reflect both beer throughout history and the history of the land around us,” said Dixon. “California Lager yeast from the frontier days, Wild Country Maple Syrup from Lutsen, Minnesota, Lacey malt developed, grown and malted here in Minnesota, spruce tips grown at Quilted Gardens Christmas Tree Farm in northern Iowa, and of course, St. Paul water! This beer will live large in both malt body and hop character, with solid pine, earthy, and spicy notes, as well as aromatics from the maple syrup and the spruce tips.” Herkulean Woods Information:
Malts: Harrington, Lacey, Caramel Hops: Herkules, Northern Brewer, Exp 05256 ABV: 8.2% IBUs: 77 Color: Amber Yeast: California Common Lager Serve in a tulip glass or American pint at 38-40°F Digital images of the Unchained Series are available upon request. For more information about the Unchained Series and kick-off events, please visit http://www.summitbrewing.com. To see an interview with brewer Christian, check out Summit’s YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h095XaA2XQg&feature=youtube_gdata) page. About the Unchained Series The Unchained Series, which saw its first batch in 2009, allows each of Summit’s individual brewers to showcase their creativity by allowing them to break free from the norm and create their own beer. “We’re fortunate to have nine phenomenal brewers at Summit,” said Mark Stutrud, founder and president of Summit Brewing Company. “The Unchained Series is a way for our brewers to showcase their artistry. There are no budgetary restraints, no outside influences from a sales team, and the brewers are free to collect ingredients from anywhere in the world. As long as it’s legal, they have complete autonomy.”
Summit Brewing Company
Founded in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1986, Summit Brewing Company has stayed close to its roots, serving the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. Summit’s beers are currently available in 18 states including Minnesota, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Arkansas and Wisconsin. Summit now produces 14 varieties of premium craft beer, including seven year-round, five seasonal beers, and the limited release Unchained Series and Union Series. Since its inception, the brewery has been a consistent pioneer in the craft beer movement.

I am super excited to let you all know about this special release at Town Hall.
Ben Adair's Colonial Ale, winner of the 2013 Byggvir's Big Beer Cup Best of Show, will be served at Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery (1430 Washington Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55454) on August 21st at 5 pm.
This was the first place entry in the Historic Category last year. Ben really put a lot of research into his entry and both the beer and the write up were excellent! Which is why the Best of Show judges chose this beer as last year's Byggvir winner. Ben brewed his recipe with Mike Hoops at the brewery this summer and now you can try it.
I hope you will stop by and join us!
