Queue the trumpets! Release the dancing monkeys!
Registration is now open for the 2013 Great Northern Brew-Ha-Ha!, hosted by
the Northern Ale Stars of Duluth & Superior. The 2013 Great Northern Brew
Ha-Ha will be held February 8th & 9th in the charming port-side city of
Duluth MN. All BJCP categories of Beer, Mead, and Cider are eligible for
entry.
You can register entries and to volunteer to judge or steward at
http://www.northernalestars.org/greatnorthernbrewhaha.html
Now the bad news.the site of last year's extravaganza has forced us out. Now
the good news.this year's Brew-Ha-Ha has moved (again) to the heart of
Duluth's craft brewing scene, Fitgers Brewery Complex, where the Midi
Restaurant finds itself the naive and uninformed host. Those people coming
from out of town can find discounted hotel information at
<http://greatnorthernbrewhaha.brewcomp.com/volunteers>
http://greatnorthernbrewhaha.brewcomp.com/volunteers . Both of these hotels
have been featured on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" and (more
importantly) are just one staggering block from the Fitgers Brewery Complex.
And, now the good news. again. Thanks to our generous sponsors at Brewhemoth
we will be giving away a 15.5 gallon Penrose brew kettle to one lucky
volunteer! You will receive one entry ticket for each session that you
volunteer for so sign up early and often!
As with past years, anyone volunteering for the Upper Mississippi Mash-out (
<http://www.mashout.org/> www.mashout.org January 25th & 26th) can drop-off
their entries at the Mash-out and have their entries safely transported to
Duluth for FREE!! Other FREE drop-off locations are all Northern Brewer
retail locations (including Milwaukee), Midwest Homebrewing in St. Louis
Park MN, and the Thirsty Pagan Brewing in Superior WI.

Subject: [sphbc] UMMO 2013 Entry sort
Greetings all!
Yes yes yes I know what you're all thinking: "...oh great, it's -him-
again... and he's asking for help ... again!", but alas, every year you know
it's coming.
That's right, the 2013 UMMO is around the corner and we're looking for
assistance with sorting entries.
We're planning on doing the sort this coming Sunday the 20th at the Northern
Brewer Warehouse in Roseville (map here: http://goo.gl/maps/e1gya ) at 9am.
What does all this entail? Putting labels on bottles and sorting said
bottles into their appropriate boxen... easy! The whole process doesn't
take too long, maybe ~3 hours... more if you count having pints at the bar
afterwards.
If you want to volunteer, or have any questions, please send me an email
DIRECTLY.
Also, if you have a source or stash of 24-pack beer cases and/or 6-pack
holders, please bring them! We can always use more cases and 6-pack
holders.
Even if you can only make it for a little while, your assistance is much
appreciated!
Since so much has changed at the warehouse, please email me or call me (
218-349-9592 ) when you arrive and I'll let you know what door to go to.
Thanks much, cheers!
-Eric

Subject: Great Arizona Homebrew Competition
Dear Brewer;
Brewmeisters Anonymous is pleased to announce the Great Arizona Homebrew Competition will be held on April 20th and April 21st, 2013. It is our hope and our goal that this event will lead to the greater understanding, the greater enjoyment, and the greater quality of homebrewed beer, mead and cider for all who participate.
Brewing at home allows us the freedom to make any beverage we are brave enough to attempt. Many home brewers begin their foray into brewing content with any product that resembles the intended beverage. With greater experience in brewing, we gain the confidence and ability to brew with greater predictability in our results.
Good beer is a pleasure to drink, regardless of its style. For home brewers who are content with making delicious beverages that don’t necessarily conform to any style, we say “Cheers!” If you are a brewer who wants the challenge of brewing to a particular style, we invite you to brew and enter your beer in the Great Arizona Homebrew Competition. All Mead, Perry, and Cider will be automatically transferred to the Arizona Mead Cup.
For those who are new to the idea of homebrew competitions here is a bit of what goes on. Judges are gathered that are familiar with traditional styles of beer. In groups of two to four, they taste all of the entries in a particular style category and determine among themselves which ones most closely represents the style. The three that represent the style the closest are given first, second and third place for that style. There are twenty-three (23) beer style categories. The style categories are defined by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) dated 2008 and can be found at www.bjcp.org <http://www.bjcp.org/> . Each entry is given a score and several of the best scoring beverages from all the categories are compared to determine the Best of Show (BOS), Second, and third are all determined by the judges. The judges score sheet is returned to the brewer, it lists the judges’ evaluation and comments so you know how your product faired.
Why enter the Great Arizona Homebrew Competition? Bragging rights the sense of accomplishment from a brew well-made and the prizes. The top three entries in each category will be awarded medals and other prizes.
Mailed entries will be accepted through April 11th. For important details and restrictions, please see the Brewmeisters Anonymous website at http://www.brewarizona.org <http://www.brewarizona.org/> or write to:
