The next BJCP Exam Prep class starts on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 6:30 pm. I have had a few people decide that this isn't the right time for them to take it, so I have a few open seats. I know this is short notice.
The classes will be every Thursday from 6:30 pm and going until 10:30 pm (or later) for 11 weeks. We will be covering the material that is in the BJCP exams, including: the various styles of beer, how to fill out judging sheets, brewing ingredients, brewing techniques, brewing history, etc. A large portion of this class involves sampling various beers, so a designated driver to pick you up after class is recommended. This class requires a lot of participation and each person in the class will be required to give a presentation on a selected topic. You will also be required to bring selected beers to certain classes. For most people this runs about $150+ during the class.
The focus of this class is to prepare people for the Beer Judging Certification Program online & tasting exams (scheduled for December 16th) and to teach them how to become beer judges. Although other topics are covered, this is really the purpose for the class. If you feel that you are going to miss more than 3 classes or you are not interested in taking the BJCP exam (or in judging beers), this is not the class for you. There are only 12 seats available for any BJCP exam. First priority is given to people who are taking this class, so it is very important that you are not taking a seat if you do not want to take the exam.
You need to be a current member of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association to take this class. The fee for the class is $100. Please email me (not to the list), if you are interested. Thanks.Gera Exire LaTour (gera_latour(a)hotmail.com)
Point taken Sean. Personally I Would be more impressed to hear of famous musicians or movie stars that have there chefs brew for them.

Note to self, never bring politics into brewing because you'll get responses from people like this...

Thanks for that Mike, besides the fact that Obama wouldn't know a good beer if it sprayed in the face.

How is it that this president gets credit for brewing? Like many issues, people have these ideas about him and for the life of me, I don’t get it. He is not a brewer, never has brewed, and probably won’t until he leaves the White house this January and retires in Hawaii. It’s the White house chefs that brew! Everybody should pay more attention to the facts.
Maybe then he’ll have time in between Ellen, The View, and golf.

Shouldn’t we invite the actual home brewers that made the beers (the White House cooking staff)?

I am certain Obama will be making at least one pit stop in the Cities before the election.
I propose we send him an invitation to visit with us for tasting some of our brews (and we in turn will get to taste the White House brews that travel with him). Wonder if other brew clubs have extended such an invitation. Let's be the first! Or, let's not be the only one that didn't extend an invitation.
Do we, as a club, need to vote on this proposal? If so, please consider this as a motion put forth by me. We need someone to second the motion and then open up discussion prior to casting our ballots.
So, do I hear a second??

* Label Contest *
For those who have labels for your beers, you may now have them judged as well as the beers they represent. There is a catch though - only beers that are entered in the LOTMW competition may have their labels evaluated. As you fill out your online entry form, you will notice a category for 'Label'. This is where your entry will be noted. Write the name of the beer on the back of a hard copy of your label and include it/them with your beer entries. We ask that you only submit labels that are crafted and designed by you, the brewer. Please no professional labels. If you happen to be a graphics professional that also brews, that is fine. The labels will be judged the same day as the competition and notification will be sent out as well as listed on the MUGZ website. There is no fee to enter your labels; winner will receive a hand-crafted plaque to display a standard sized label.
*Muddy Waters Category*
Do you brew a beer you and your friends love that doesn’t fit a BJCP category? If it is the color of the Muddy Mississippi, then this is your category. Beers will be not be judged to any guideline, rather they will be judged more hedonistically as a session beer. The winner of this category will not be eligible for The Best of Show awards. When entering online, scroll down and enter in category 29A ~ “Muddy Waters”. Winner of this category will receive a small prize TBD.
Judges and Stewards
We could still use some more judges for the event. If you are interested in judging, please contact MUGZ at mail(a)mugzhomebrew.org or sign up at http://lotmwhome.brewcompetition.com//index.php?section=register. Judging starts at 9 a.m. Doughnuts, bagels, pop, tea, and coffee will be provided, as well as lunch, for the judges and stewards. For additional information on judging or stewarding, contact Scot/Karen Schaar at 563-326-9113 or email mail(a)mugzhomebrew.org or visit our webpage at www.mugzhomebrew.org
Awards
MUGZ will announce the winners at an awards ceremony after the competition, approximately 5-6 p.m. at Blue Cat Brew pub. Winners unable to attend the awards ceremony will have their awards mailed to them in a timely manner. MUGZ will attempt to have the score sheets available at the awards ceremony; otherwise they will be mailed in a timely manner. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each qualifying category (except for the previously mentioned ‘Muddy Waters’). The winning beer from each category, (except for the ‘Muddy Waters’), will compete against each other in a Best of Show (BOS) round. The top three BOS beers will win special awards.
**Again this year!! There will be a separate best of show for the top mead or cider, which will receive a special ribbon.**
Good Luck,
Scott Welch
