> Hey everyone, just a friendly reminder about the deadline this Monday for the Pilsner Urquell contest. If ya got a pilsner hanging around and like free trips to Chicago drop a couple bottles off at Northern Brewer no later than Monday. And if you like free beers and free food, swing by Patrick McGoverns (upstairs) Tuesday at 7pm and I'll pick up the tab for your first couple beers. Oh and bring a friend. Hoping to get a large turn out.

Subject: [sphbc] Minnesota State Fair Homebrewed Beer, Mead and Cider
Competition - Mark your Calendars and Bottle your Entries!
To: sphbc(a)googlegroups.com
*Mark your calendar and start bottling those entries 'cause registration for
the 2011 MN State Fair Homebrew Competition opens in just over a week
(7/22/11)!*
*
*
*Entries!*
Online entry will be open from *7/22-8/5* and entries must be dropped off at
either of the drop sites between 7/29 and 8/5. For more competition entry
information please visit the competition website at
www.mashout.org/mnstatefair
*
*
*Volunteers!*
Volunteer registration is also open from from *7/22-8/5 *via the competition
website. First round judging will take place on *Friday, evening August
19th* AND *Saturday, August 20th*, on the State Fair grounds in the Creative
Activities Annex. We will need judges and stewards for all sessions!
If you are interested in volunteering, but not convinced you want to judge
stewarding is a great way to see what happens at a homebrew competition.
Stewards assist the judges by getting beers from the cellar, managing the
paperwork and helping with any other requests. Often the judges will pour
beer for the steward and let them taste along.
To sign up to volunteer go to: www.mashout.org/mnstatefair scroll down (it
is a ways down) to the section entitled "Judging" - click the button that
says "Click here to register, login or volunteer" Clicking that will take
you into the database to sign up. During the registration process you will
be able to select specific times you are available and whether you would
like to judge or steward.
Hope you'll join us for a fun competition!
Sign-up online at www.mashout.org/mnstatefair or contact me directly at

Hello,
I'm writing as we're putting together the next Social Science, the new 21+
night at the Science Museum of Minnesota taking place on September 21nd
from 7-11pm. Social Science is a chance to explore the museum in a
child-free environment, grab a drink, and explore local science
organizations and food sampling from local vendors. Our first event hosted
over 1200 guests over the course of the four hour evening.
The theme of this upcoming Social Science is the science of beer and wine.
We're looking for presenters for this evening to facilitate interactive
activities to teach about this subject. Would the MHBA be interested in
participating?
Let me know if you would be interested,

Summit Brewing Company Announces 25th Anniversary Plan with New Ale and Live Music
ST. PAUL, MN – (July 11, 2011) – It’s not a party without beer, bands, and a few thousand friends – or so is the thought as Summit Brewing Company announces plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration at its headquarters, 910 Montreal Circle, St. Paul.
The celebration takes place Saturday, Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 and go on sale Monday, July 25 at 10 a.m. They can be purchased through Summit’s website at www.summitbrewing.com. Fifty percent of all ticket sales will benefit the Minnesota Music Coalition (MMC), a new non-profit that connects and supports Minnesota’s independent musicians.
“We’re celebrating 25 years in business by inviting a few of our friends over to enjoy our beer and some great Minnesota music,” said Mark Stutrud, Summit’s founder and brewmaster. The anniversary event will include the following eclectic performances: Solid Gold, X-Boys, Pert Near Sandstone, Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles, and The Prizefighters. Hotpants DJs will also be spinning Rare Soul, Deep Funk vinyl throughout the day, and local radio personality Mark Wheat will be emcee for the event.
In conjunction with its 25th Anniversary, Summit is releasing the limited edition Silver Anniversary Ale. Inspired by Summit’s award-winning and flagship brew Extra Pale Ale (EPA), the Anniversary Ale boosts the EPA’s traditional flavor profile with assertive hop character and a complex finish. The Anniversary Ale will be available the week of July 25 and will also be on tap at the party.
Several special events for the Silver Anniversary Ale will occur during the week of the beer’s release.
Monday, July 25: Mackenzie’s, 5-7 p.m. (First 25 beers served are free and then $.25 taps until 7 p.m.)
Monday, July 25: Liquor Lyle’s, 7:30-9 p.m. ($.25 taps of the Silver Anniversary Ale and 2 for 1 deals on all other Summit beers)
Tuesday, July 26: Groveland Tap, 6-8 p.m. ($.25 taps of the Silver Anniversary Ale)
Thursday, July 28: Specials served at Sweeney’s, 4-6 p.m.
Friday, July 29: Beer Dinner celebrating Summit’s 25th anniversary at Tracy’s Saloon & Eatery, 7 p.m. (Pints will be on special in the bar as well).

Summit Brewing Company Releases Batch 07: Honeymoon Saison
Latest Unchained beer pays tribute to honey in every sense of the word
ST. PAUL, MN – (July 6, 2011) – Summit Brewing Company’s newest beer is a tribute to many things, but among them – brewer Sam Doniach’s upcoming nuptials. Created by Doniach, Honeymoon Saison features real Minnesota honey and is the seventh beer to be released in Summit’s limited-time-only Unchained Series.
“The honeymoon is historically the occasion where people would drink ‘mead’ or fermented honey,” said Mark Stutrud, Founder of Summit Brewing Company. “Of course, Summit isn’t in the mead-making business, but adding a bit of honey is a good way for Sam and his wife to celebrate tying the knot.”
Doniach’s ale also honors the Saison ales that were originally brewed in French and Belgian farmhouses to refresh workers during long hours in hot fields throughout harvest season. The beer has a deep golden color and a refreshing citrus and floral character with hints of apple, pear, and spicy, peppery notes. It’s brewed with a touch of Minnesota honey as a kettle addition and is unfiltered with a smooth, clean finish.
Honeymoon Saison will be available in draught the week of July 11 and in bottles the week of July 25. Special kick-off events for Honeymoon Saison featuring brewer Sam Doniach are happening all this month.
• Tuesday, July 12: Grumpy’s (Downtown Minneapolis), 5-7 p.m.
• Wednesday, July 13: Stub and Herb’s, 4 p.m.
• Thursday, July 14: Haute Dish beer dinner, 4-7 p.m.
• Friday, July 15: Tiffany’s Sports Lounge, 3-5 p.m.
• Friday, July 15: Fabulous Fern’s, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Digital images of the Unchained Series are available on request. For more information about the brewery and Unchained kick-off events, please visit http://www.summitbrewing.com
