Rules and Policies

1. Judging
Judging at the THIRSTY Classic is something we take very seriously, but enjoy and have fun
doing. Our competition staff does the very best to draw BJCP-qualified judges and professional
brewers to evaluate entries. At least two qualified judges will judge every entry. We will store entries
upon receipt in a large walk-in refrigerator to minimize character changes. We will try to minimize
handling to avoid disturbing bottle-conditioned beers with natural sedimentation. Occasionally this is
unavoidable and scores for appearance may reflect this. Judging will take place Saturday, May 14,
2011, at the Millstream Brewery located at 835 48th Avenue, Amana, IA.
THIRSTY is soliciting qualified judges and stewards. You will receive points for the Beer Judge
Certification Program (BJCP). The THIRSTY Classic is a BJCP/AHA-sanctioned event. If you would
like to participate as a judge or steward, please contact:
Judging Director Pete Diltz via E-mail at pdiltz(a)iowatelcom.net.
2. Score Sheet Return Policy
THIRSTY will process all score sheets promptly and return them in person, or via U.S. Mail. We
will return score sheets to the address listed on the entry form. We will strive to post the results on the
THIRSTY website (http://www.thirstyhomebrew.org) as soon as possible.
3. THIRSTY Classic Category and BOS Awards
Winners will receive ribbons for first, second, and third place in each style category. Judges are
solely responsible for determining whether an entry is deserving of a ribbon. The THIRSTY Classic
Committee will combine categories and/or subcategories as necessary to maintain competition
integrity. In general, we will require that there be at least six entries in a category before we award a full
set of ribbons.
The THIRSTY Classic Committee will also award a distinctive Best of Show prize, the Michael
Hansen memorial trophy The BOS round will consist of the entries taking 1st place in each category. All
decisions of the judges, competition staff, and organizer will be final, without exception.

Good news for Medtronic, BoSci?
Bruising battle shaping up in stents
Article by: , Star Tribune
Updated: April 5, 2011 - 4:49 PM
Reports from a major meeting of cardiologists this week suggest a shift may
be on the way in the market for drug-coated heart stents.
Both Fridley-based Medtronic Inc. and Boston Scientific Corp. introduced results
from separate studies indicating their next-generation stents are superior to older
versions.
Wells Fargo analyst Larry Biegelsen said in a note to investors that the evidence suggests
that Medtronic and Boston Scientific's products could account for 21 to 23 percent
of the $3.8 billion worldwide market by 2014.
That means Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories' recent domination of the
market will come under fire.
Stents are tiny metal sleeves that prop open clogged heart arteries. When coated with
drugs, vessels are less likely to reclog.
Medtronic's stent, called Resolute, is the new version of its original Endeavor product. The
stent is designed to release its drug into the body more slowly, preventing the artery
from renarrowing and minimizing repeat treatments.
The company's study involved 1,402 patients in the United States and found that
4.7 percent treated with the newer stent died for heart-related reasons, suffered a heart
attack or needed retreatment within a year. The older Endeavor stent had a 6.5 percent
rate of complications.
The companies are presenting the data at the American College of Cardiology meeting
in New Orleans.
The Resolute stent is not yet available in the United States, but data from the study
released Monday will be used to bolster the company's submission to the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for approval. Medtronic says the FDA's decision is
expected in the first half of 2012.
Morgan Stanley analyst David Lewis said investors continue to "underappreciate the
market potential" of the Resolute stent.
"First-generation Endeavor was largely relegated to a niche market," he wrote, "but
we believe Resolute will compete squarely" with rival stents from Boston Scientific and
Abbott.
The news failed to move Medtronic's stock Monday -- shares closed at $39.43, down 7
cents.
A separate study involving 1,530 patients showed Boston Scientific's next-generation
Promus Element stent is similar to earlier iterations of the device. The original version
of Promus is identical to Xience, the market-leading stent made by Abbott -- part of a
licensing agreement struck by the two companies when Boston Scientific bought
Guidant Corp. in 2006.
Death from cardiac causes, heart attacks and retreatment occurred in 3.4 percent of
patients with the new Promus Element stent, compared with 2.9 percent of those treated
with the older device. Rates of deadly clots in patients were identical at 0.4 percent, with
re-treatment in 1.9 percent of patients in both groups.
Showing similar clinical results to the existing Promus stent is important to Boston
Scientific because the company's supply agreement with Abbott ends in mid-2012,
analysts said. After that, the company will have to produce its own version of the
product.
Monday's study results will be used to pursue regulatory approval in the United
States -- where the domestic market for drug-coated stents is now valued at more
than $2 billion, according to the Millennium
Research Group.
Leerink Swann analyst Rick Wise said clinical results should "ease investor anxiety about
[Boston Scientific's] ability to achieve FDA approval for Promus Element and
successfully transition its Promus sales to Element."
Boston Scientific's stock closed Monday at $7.23, down 7 cents.
Dr. Martin Leon, of Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital and lead
researcher in the Medtronic study, said cardiologists will determine which device to
use in patients based on subtle differences and personal preference. He compared the
products to luxury automobiles made by Audi and BMW.
"It's tough," he said. "These are all best-in-class."

I guess the extra-long winter has dulled everyone's senses! :) After sending the first message about the MN Homebrewers Association's annual Saints tailgating party, the response was almost nil. Perhaps the selected date was bad for all, or perhaps the interest in the event has suddenly waned. We normally sell all 50 tickets, but we're nowhere near that at this point. Whatever the case, this event is on life-support, so please speak up NOW if you are planning to attend. In two weeks I need to turn back unclaimed tickets, and to be honest, at this point we don't have enough attendees to justify the club paying for a tailgating spot and tables/chairs. The weather is warming, so let it warm your interest in outdoor events, too! Below is the original message. For the 73rd year in a row, the MN Homebrewers Association will have a tailgating party before a May Saints game, and this year the date is MONDAY, MAY 23rd Reserved-seating tickets are $12 each, and those you should e-mail me to reserve. Do so NOW, please, rather than the week before the game. The club has to decide by April 22nd how many tickets we're purchasing, so just do it now! Then send a check (payable to MHBA) to John Longballa1015 Parker AveRoseville 55113 The gates to the park open at 4:00 that day, and VERY shortly thereafter the club members will begin assembling at our usual tailgating spot (#5) for homebrew, grilling, and fun. The club pays for the tailgating spot, as well as for tables and chairs. You bring beer, Frisbees, and something to grill. Three people should volunteer to bring a grill, please; tell me that you're doing so. Families are most definitely welcome, and one does not have to be a member to attend this event. Very young children generally aren't harassed at the gate about having a ticket, but you have to make the call on how many tickets to purchase for wee ones. Around 7:00 about half the assembled throng will head in to watch the start of the game. Around 8:00 a few more may straggle in. Some just hunker down and tailgate until the game is over, and that's just fine. The crazy stories about prior games are now shared only at the event, so you'll have to attend to hear about past years. Join us! Thanks,
John Personal. Professional.

Hey everyone.
I just wanted to remind you the next MHBA club meeting is April 2nd from noon - 3 pm at the Northern Brewer warehouse.
This is our third annual Home Brew Fest, which has been a highly popular meeting!
Please send me an email letting me know which beer/meads/ciders you plan on bringing with your recipe. (Last year, there was about 50 different selections to try----signing up ahead of time makes it easier to keep track. But you are still welcome to bring your brew the day of the event.) There will be Northern Brewer gift certificates for People's Choice beer and People's Choice mead/cider.
MHBA taster glasses will be given to current members. (You can update your membership at the meeting or online at mnbrewers.com.)
I am looking forward to it!
