This year's MHBA Big Brew meeting will be held on Saturday, May 7th from
10am to 4pm at a warehouse in Minnetonka which may be the future home of a
new brewery here in Minnesota. The address is: 6020 Culligan Way, Minnetonka
MN 55345.
We are gong to take a new direction with Big Brew this year. Our focus will
be learning about single hop varieties in IPA's which include bitterness,
flavor, and aroma. We, as a club, will be brew...ing an IPA with extract and
specialty grains.
Our club will be providing extract and specialty grains for a recipe we have
created for brewing teams! (Hops and yeast will need to be provided by the
members). Our mission is to form teams of 2 or 3 brewers per brew session
(up to 10 brew sessions), and brew the same IPA extract recipe provided by
the MHBA, and each team is to select which one single hop variety they will
use in their IPA, and choose their own yeast. For example, Team 1 ("name
your own team") will brew their IPA with their own additions of Simcoe at
their chosen addition times, at their chosen amounts, and use WLP001 yeast.
Team 2 ("name your own team") will brew using only Columbus hops in their
IPA, and WLP051 California V yeast. It's up to you! Afterwards, we will ask
that each team bring 2 bottles or more if you please to share to the July
MHBA meeting to sample and will be judged in a MHBA exclusive IPA Big Brew
Competition. Top 3 winning teams will receive prizes.
MHBA teams are to provide kettles, burners, propane, chillers, hoses, and
other brewing necessities you would need on a brew day to brew an extract
beer. There will be water sources provided, as well as restroom facilities,
and warehouse shelter if needed. Please bring lawnchairs, beverages if you
please, and a type of food, snack or dessert. We will have a grill to cook
on at the site!
Anyone interested in bringing their equipment and brewing at Big Brew,
please contact Neil Bromenshenkel at neilbrom(a)hotmail.com along with names
of any co-brewers by May 1st in order for us to know how much extract and
specialty grains to purchase for the event.
More information will be posted to the MHBA Facebook page, and our Yahoo
Members Forum page. Please signup through the membership pages or e-mail
Neil Bromenshenkel directly at neilbrom(a)hotmail.com
We have already started getting a number of entries, so we will definitely need some help with the judging and stewarding!

I know it snowed again this week, but I promise that the pile of snow in Midway Stadium's parking lot will be gone by the time the MN Homebrewers Association shows up to tailgate! (Just a few weeks ago that parking lot was FULL of snow--the entire lot, about 30 feet deep--I'm not kidding. You can find photos online.) Anyway, we set aside 50 tickets to the Saints game on Monday, May 23rd, but today I need to declare if we still want all those tickets. Full details follow, but please let me know TODAY via e-mail if you're planning to attend, then please send me a check (again, details below). Thanks,
John (from the original message)For the 73rd year in a row, the MN Homebrewers Association will have a tailgating party before a May Saints game, and this year the date is MONDAY, MAY 23rd Reserved-seating tickets are $12 each, and those you should e-mail me to reserve. Do so NOW, please, rather than the week before the game. The club has to decide by April 22nd how many tickets we're purchasing, so just do it now! Then send a check (payable to MHBA) to John Longballa1015 Parker AveRoseville 55113 The gates to the park open at 4:00 that day, and VERY shortly thereafter the club members will begin assembling at our usual tailgating spot (#5) for homebrew, grilling, and fun. The club pays for the tailgating spot, as well as for tables and chairs. You bring beer, Frisbees, and something to grill. Three people should volunteer to bring a grill, please; tell me that you're doing so. Families are most definitely welcome, and one does not have to be a member to attend this event. Very young children generally aren't harassed at the gate about having a ticket, but you have to make the call on how many tickets to purchase for wee ones. Around 7:00 about half the assembled throng will head in to watch the start of the game. Around 8:00 a few more may straggle in. Some just hunker down and tailgate until the game is over, and that's just fine. The crazy stories about prior games are now shared only at the event, so you'll have to attend to hear about past years. Join us! Personal. Professional.

Subject: Judge Request for WI State Fair Homebrew Competition
Dear BJCP Judge,
This is an invitation for you to judge or steward at this years WI State Fair Homebrew Competition a BJCP certified event. This event will be held Friday, May 13th and Saturday, May 14th, 2010 at the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center at the WI State Fair Park Grounds, West Allis , WI (just west of Milwaukee , WI ).
This year is the ninth year that the WI State Fair Homebrew Competition has adopted the standard BJCP categories for entries & judging. We continue to try to improve this event, hoping to become one of the great homebrew competitions of the area. Last years event had approximately 200 entries, and this year were anticipating an increase in entries. The competitions rules & regulations can be found at www.beerbarons.org for your reference. Feel free to take a look at them and get a feel for how this competition is coming along.
Fridays event starts at 6:30 pm with a single round of judging. Saturdays event begins at 9:00 AM with a second round at 12:00 PM. Lunch will be provided at 11:00 AM for those who volunteer for both Saturday sessions.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (home 414-235-9996) or at statefairhbc(a)beerbarons.org. Also, if you know anyone else that would be interested in judging or stewarding, by all means pass this information on to him or her. Novices are welcome, and will be paired with BJCP judges.
