Former MhBA club president Rick Oftel has been in touch with the former president of the MHBA (Minnesota Hobby Beekeeper's Association) and has wrangled a deal to buy honey from him for $99 for 5 gallons (60 lbs). That's less than $2/lb of honey - VERY reasonable, if you've bought honey from NB or Midwest lately.
He has 20 buckets available - first 20 people responding to Rick with an order takes them. I presume they will be delivered to Rick's house, and you will have to pick them up there. Contact Rick.Oftel(a)toro.com

Subject: Honey Info
Al and Curt,
Here is what I just received from Dave. Ironically, Dave is the president of the MHBA (Minnesota Hobby Beekeeper Association). The first paragraph is his description of the honey and the
second paragraph is some general info regarding keeping hives.
Beer Club price $99/5 gallon bucket. Currently 20 buckets filled and additional honey available.
Clover/Basswood honey. I did get some this last year that was a little darker (more wildflower type from one of my yards), but believe I’m done with that now. My hives are mostly around the Pine City, Rush City area and I have another 25 hives located by our lake home in the Park Rapids area.
General Bee Information: As to having a hive or two, there are many people looking for someone to keep bees on their property here in the twin cities. I don’t know if you know it, but I’m the current President of the Minnesota Hobby Beekeepers Association. I get plenty of people looking for someone to place a couple of hives on their property. Now since the general public has become much more aware of the bee problem, many people have opened their land to beekeepers to try and help the environment. There are also several of the cities who have recently changed their ordinances or have decided that they were no longer are going to enforce their ordinance for be related issues. So you might want to check your local municipality again to see where they stand, if you have not done so recently. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

Subject: Between the bluffs homebrew contest
Hi All,
I am looking for judges for the Between the Bluffs homebrew contest. Judging will take place April 16th at Pearl Street Brewery in La Crosse, WI. Last year we had approximately 80 entries. This is the second year that the contest is being run as a BJCP sanctioned event.
I have a few hotel rooms I can give out. Dinner vouchers will also be included. The Between the Bluffs beer, wine, and cheese festival is the followingSaturday, and free tickets to that even will also be provided to judges if desired.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping out with judging.
Thanks,
Bryce Dvorak, P.E., LEED AP

Hey everyone.
I hope to see you for Saturday's meeting at CSPS. Yum! Chili!
I just wanted to remind you the NEXT meeting is April 2nd from noon - 3 pm at the Northern Brewer warehouse (1945 County Road C2 W, Saint Paul, MN).
This is our third annual Home Brew Fest! This has been a highly popular meeting!
Please send me an email letting me know which beer/meads/ciders you plan on bringing! (Last year, there was about 50 different selections to try----signing up ahead of time makes it easier to keep track. But you are still welcome to bring your brew the day of the event.) There will be a gift certificate for People's Choice beer and People's Choice mead/cider.
I am looking forward to it!

Once again, it is time for one of our most popular meetings - our
annual Chili Cook-Off!
There are three categories in which you can enter:
Red Chili - meat, but NO beans
Chili with Beans - not really chili, but we're here to have fun!
Open - green, vegetarian, white, whatever
You can help out by bringing your chili ready to eat in crock pots and
bringing along extension cords, power strips, and serving utensils.
Bowls, spoons, and napkins will be provided.
We will be looking for judges for each of the categories and have
everyone vote for their favorite overall. The winner of each category
gets a prize and the People's Choice winner gets a prize and the honor
of bringing home the Chief Chili Pepper trophy!
The March meeting also features a swap meet. Bring things you no
longer need. I will be. Some of my items can just walk off, some can
be purchased with beer currency. Bring some of your own stuff; maybe
we can trade.
Of course we welcome all the home brew you would like to bring to the
meeting, especially beers that go well with chili. We even like mead
and ciders.
See you on Saturday!

Do we really need another reason :-)
The closing paragraph ...
Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that alcohol consumption
was significantly associated with a lower incidence of overall dementia
and Alzheimer dementia. In line with a large-scale study also based on GP
attenders aged 75 years and older, the study found that light-to-moderate
alcohol consumption was associated with relatively good physical and
mental health. This three-year follow-up study included, at baseline,
only those subjects 75 years of age and older, the mean age was 80.2
years, much higher than that in most other studies.
