Hey everyone. Nice seeing so many people at the Chili Cook-off. Big thanks to Greg for organizing it again this year!
Next month, I am helping to host the second annual Homebrew Fest from noon-3 pm for April's MHBA meeting:
Northern Brewer Warehouse1945 County Road C2 WSaint Paul, MN 55113
If your MHBA membership is up to date, you will receive a MHBA tasting glass at this meeting. This is the only time we hand out these glasses. (You can sign up for membership on site, but already signed up members get first priority if the glass supply starts to run low.) But, like last year, we need something to put into the glasses. So, please bring bottles or kegs of your homebrewed beer, mead, and ciders to share with your fellow club members. Last year we had over 75 members attend this meeting with a wide range of styles represented. There will be a gift certificate given for both people's choice beer and for people's choice mead/cider.
This ties in with the AHA Club Only Competition of extract beers. This can be any category of beer, but the recipe has to have at least 50% extracts. I know there are plenty of you that brew with extracts, so there is still time to make something fantastic to enter. (You will need to be able to have two bottles to send forward, but you don't need to have them at the club meeting. The club will pay for your entry fee and shipping if you beer is selected to represent MHBA.)
Entries are due Saturday, May 1, 2010. Judging will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010. The judging will be done by the Flying Bison Brewing Company out of Buffalo, NY.
Since we had so many people bring beverages last year, please email me: gera_latour(a)hotmail.com to let me know what you plan to bring. (Also let me know if your beer is extract.)
Also, as I mentioned at the meeting, I am organizing the commemorative beers and meads/ciders that the MHBA is responsible for at Nationals. We have to provide 200 bottles of beer and 200 bottles of mead/cider. If you are interested in brewing for this, please let me know via email. Your offering will need to be bottled and ready to go by mid-May. (We will be tasting to make sure everything is a good representative of our club's members/brewing skills, since this is being handed out to people attending the convention.)
Thanks and see you April 3rd! -Gera

Club Meeting – Saturday, March 6, 2010 noon-3pm
Seventh Annual Chili Cook-Off and Swap Meet
CSPS Hall, 383 Michigan St., St. Paul
Once again, it is time for our annual Chili Cook-Off!
There are three categories in which you can enter:
Red Chili – meat, but NO beans
Chili with Beans – not really chili, but we're here to have fun!
Open – green, vegetarian, white, whatever
Like previous years, we'll have everyone vote for their favorite for
each category and then have everyone vote for their favorite overall.
The winner of each category gets a prize and the overall winner gets a
prize and the honor of bringing home the Chief Chili Pepper trophy!
You can help out by bringing your chili ready to eat in crock pots and
bringing along extension cords, power strips, and serving utensils.
Bowls, spoons, and napkins will be provided.
The March meeting also features a swap meet. Bring things you no
longer need. I will be. Some of my items can just walk off, some can
be purchased with beer currency. Bring some of your own stuff; maybe
we can trade.
Of course we welcome all the home brew you would like to bring to the
meeting, especially beers that go well with chili. We even like mead
and ciders.
We'll also select an American Ale (BJCP Category 10 styles - American
Pale Ale, American Amber Ale, and American Brown Ale) to send off to
the club only competition. Bring your entry and if chosen the club
will help send it to North Carolina.
