Juno and I were talking today about this weekend's MHBA Homebrew Fest being held here at our warehouse at Northern Brewer and we thought of something to add to the information for the event. Bring your own chair if you'd like. There are no real seats available in the warehouse, standing room only kind of thing. So you think you'll want to kick back during the three-hour event, bring your own folding / lawn / picnic / LaZy Boy chair to make your time here as comfy as possible. Can't wait to see you all!

Just a reminder: This Saturday is the MHBA meeting at the Northern Brewer Warehouse:
Date:
Saturday, April 3, 2010
Time:
12:00pm - 3:00pm
Location:
Northern Brewer Warehouse
Street:
1945 County Road C2 W
City/Town:
Saint Paul, MN
So, I know a handful of you are bringing homebrew to share. If you are planning on bringing a beer, mead, or cider, please let me know ahead of time, so I can make sure we get everything noted for the people's choice and AHA Club Only Competition. (This month is extract beers---any style, but at least 50% extract. You will need to have two bottles to send, but you don't need to bring them to the meeting.) There will be two $25 gift certificates to Northern Brewer: one for people's choice beer and the other for people's choice mead/cider.
There will be sammiches! (Thanks Mike for taking care of this.)
And if your membership is current, a nifty MHBA tasting glass is yours to keep.
Last year we had over 75 members attend this meeting with a wide range of styles represented, so I am very excited to see what we get this year.
As always, we welcome you to bring friends and family that are interested in learning more about homebrewing. You can sign up for MHBA membership (or renew) at the meeting.
Send me an email if you have any questions or to let me know what homebrew you plan to share (please note if it is extract). See you Saturday!

Dear Northern Brewer Customer,
We received an email from John Blichmann of Blichmann Engineering indicating that some of the three-piece ball valves shipped from his company between Jan 01, 2010 and March 20, 2010 may have had some lubricating oil present upon shipment. The timing of your order means it may have been affected, although it is not certain. If you did not wash the ball-valve with warm, soapy water prior to use, we recommend that you do so at this time. We have created a video walkthrough to assist with the process; it should only take a few minutes. You can find it here:
http://et.ratepoint.com/55d3022f367bd2097069aade75b0a65b/28a79ab3804fe406a6…
At this point, we have no reason to believe there is any kind of health risk due to this oil and the effects, if any, are probably minimal. John, however, is a careful individual. I have quoted his email to us below.
"We just discovered that some recent shipments of BoilerMaker kettles and NPT Fermenators may have had oil used as a seal lubricant in the valves by our supplier. Please disassemble any valves you have in stock that were shipped from Jan 1 through March 20 and remove the oil with detergent. In addition, please notify any customers that may have received products from Jan 1 through March 20 to do the same if they have not already done so. We have resolved this issue with our supplier and have reworked all products in-house and this check has been added to our inspection procedure. This issue does NOT include the tri-clamp valves.
We apologize in advance for the trouble this has caused.
Sincerely,
John Blichmann
Blichmann Engineering, LLC"
If you have any comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Here's the second-to-last call for signing up for the MN Homebrewers Association's Saints game. Details follow, but by April 17th I need to turn back tickets I don't think we'll sell, so just sign up NOW, please!
Here's the original info--
It's time to start planning for the MN Homebrewers Association's annual "Sinning with the Saints" event.
If you're new, here's how it works:
Each May, the club rents a tailgating spot for a game at Midway Stadium, home of the Saint Paul Saints baseball club. At 4:00, members (with their friends, and family) begin assembling at the tailgating spot. We grill, we chill, we enjoy being outside for the first time in six months. Homebrew is shared, and after 7:00 people trickle into the game to eat cotton candy and harass the opposing team. This year we'll be attending the Monday, May 17th contest against the Saltdogs of Lincoln, Nebraska.
New this year!--chairs and tables! The club has sprung for 50 chairs and five tables to be set up at our tailgating spot in advance of our arrival. Rumor has it that there might be a five-gallon keg of some local treat available as well.
Old this year!-- e-mail me with your ticket requests, then send a check (PAYABLE to MHBA) for $12 per ticket to John Longballa, 1015 Parker Ave, Roseville, 55113 We purchase 50 tickets for reserved seats, and have sold them all the past three years. It would help me a lot if people who are planning to attend could speak up before the week of the game, like NOW, please! (or at least by the end of March--pleeeeease?) Children aged three and older need a ticket.
Also old--we'll need a few folks to bring grills. Everyone should bring grillables and something to share. Plates, plastic ware, etc. are provided by the club.
Mark your calendars, e-mail me, send a check (payable to MHBA), then start planning your menu items!
John

The overall theme for our Club Nite booth will be ice fishing. We're
working on building 3 walls of a simulated ice fishing house with taps
coming through the wall as our 'booth'. We hope to have beer, cider and
mead on tap and the number of taps will probably depend on how many
contributed kegs we are promised. Probably a minimum of 10 taps, but if
more people promise kegs, we'll look at adding more.

Apparently I am the coordinator of beer for the MHBA booth on Club
Night at the AHA NHC. At this time I do not know how many kegs we
will be able to have online at a time but I suspect it will be quite a
few. A this point I haven't heard a theme for the booth though that
may be as simple as names for the beverages that adhere to the theme.
If you have a keg (we would really prefer a full or very closer to
full keg) of home brewed beer, mead, or cider you can provide for the
club booth please let me know. My understanding is we will be able to
handle some bottled beverages as well so let me know what you want to
provide in bottles as well.
Since the club is also handling a shift in the hospitality area we
will be pour additional beer there.

I will be driving entries for the AHA regional competition to Madison WI before the April 1st deadline. The cost will be $1 per entry to offset the cost of gas and other expences for MHBA members. If you would like your entries delivered to Madison you will need to drop them off at my house by Sunday March 28th along with cash or check for the delivery fee. Do not include your entry fees in with the delivery fee as these need to be paid online with your registration. Make checks payable to me.
If you have any questions you can email me at csmitty42(a)yahoo.com. I would like to get an idea of how many people are planning on sending entries. So email me with approximately how many entries you will have and when you are planning on dropping them off.
If I'm not home when you arrive to drop off your entries I will leave a bin on the south side of my house for you to leave your entries in. If you would like to plan a drop off time you can call me at 612-823-6889(H) or 612-366-2552(c).

Just a reminder about the second annual Homebrew Fest from noon-3 pm for April's MHBA meeting:
Northern Brewer Warehouse
1945 County Road C2 WSaint Paul, MN 55113
If your MHBA membership is up to date, you will receive a MHBA tasting glass at this meeting. This is the only time we hand out these glasses. (You can sign up for membership on site, but already signed up members get first priority if the glass supply starts to run low.) But, like last year, we need something to put into the glasses. So, please bring bottles or kegs of your homebrewed beer, mead, and ciders to share with your fellow club members. Last year we had over 75 members attend this meeting with a wide range of styles represented. There will be a $25 Northern Brewer gift certificate given for both people's choice beer and for people's choice mead/cider.
This ties in with the AHA Club Only Competition of extract beers. This can be any category of beer, but the recipe has to have at least 50% extracts. I know there are plenty of you that brew with extracts, so there is still time to make something fantastic to enter. (You will need to be able to have two bottles to send forward, but you don't need to have them at the club meeting. The club will pay for your entry fee and shipping if you beer is selected to represent MHBA.)
Entries are due Saturday, May 1, 2010. Judging will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010. The judging will be done by the Flying Bison Brewing Company out of Buffalo, NY.
Since we had so many people bring beverages last year, please email me: gera_latour(a)hotmail.com to let me know what you plan to bring. (Also let me know if your beer is extract.)
Thanks and see you April 3rd! -Gera
