2009 Holiday Potluck
Where: CSPS Hall - 383 Michigan St., St. Paul - Above the Glockenspiel Restaurant - corner of Michigan St & West 7th
When: Friday, December 11th from 6:00 PM-10:00PM
Again this Year: The club is providing a 5 gallon keg of commercial beer
What to bring:
Food: Bring a dish to share (the theme is dishes prepared with BEER), copies of the recipe, serving utensils and extension cords if necessary. A "People's Choice" award will be given for the best potluck dish with beer as an ingredient. Plates, napkins, and silverware will be provided.
Beer to share: Bring any beer, mead or cider you wish to share. There will be a "Peoples Choice" award given for the best beer, mead or cider. Bottles, growlers or keg are welcome. The style of the month for December is Bock, so don't forget to bring yours along to earn your SOTM sticker for December. You can also bring any Belgian Strong Ales from November's SOTM. Don't forget a small tasting glass, some plastic glasses will be available in case of emergency.
Beer to exchange: Bring up to 24 bottles to exchange with your fellow homebrewers. Label each bottle with your name, email address, style and beer name (if it has one). Everyone who participated draws a number and then selects a bottle in order until they receive as many bottles as they brought.
Family and Friends: This is a family friendly event, so bring your significant other, kids, and any friends/family that have ever expressed an interest in homebrewing or beer. Just to be clear you or your guest don't have to be a club member to attend(a few people were wondering).
Since this is one of the most attended gatherings of the year, it's a great opportunity to get out and meet your fellow homebrewers. If you have not made it to a meeting , the Holiday potluck is a perfect chance to try some great homebrew, delicious food and exchange homebrew with others.
If you have not renewed you membership or would like to sign-up for a club membership, our member director should be on hand to collect your money and hand out your new membership cards. Which for those who don't know, are good for a 10% discount at the local homebrew shops(Northern Brewer, Midwest Supply, Brew & Grow, & Still-H2O)
Additionally, the beers brewed during last month's "teach a friend to homebrew" will be available for all to try.
If you have any questions email me at csmitty42(a)yahoo.com.
Hope to see you there.
Chris Smith

So do we just show up and get disappointed or is there a way to determine if
this applies to our local Granite City locations?

Susan,
Thanks, for the info it's looking like we will do something in Iowa around
April time. Hope all is going well in Fargo. Pass along to the hop heads in
the club that we are doing the batch 1000 for our next seasonal. This is
the almost double( it only comes in with an OG of 1065-1068) IPA we brewed
in Sioux Falls this summer. It's pretty tasty, and unlike anything we've
brewed in the past few years.

Subject: Unchained Series Batch 02
Summit Brewing Company releases Batch 02 of thelimited release
Unchained Series: 90/- Scottish Style Ale
ST. PAUL, MN – (November 5, 2009) – Summit Brewing Company is proud to introduce the second beer in the limited release Unchained Series. Batch 02 is a 90/- Scottish Style Ale with heather, helmed by brewer Eric Blomquist. A traditional Wee Heavy style, this hearty brew has a rich mahogany color, caramel notes, and a hint of herbal flavor.
The inspiration for the series is to illustrate the expertise and craft of each brewer while having a little fun in the process. Each of the six brewers will choose their own beer style and manage the process from start to finish, from research and recipe development all the way to tasting the beer in the final stages to determine proper conditioning and filtration for the ideal flavor and aroma profile. To make this even more personal, the bottle labels and six-packs are printed with the signature of the brewer in charge of that brew.
“The critical and public success of the first beer in the series, a German style Kölsch, has really fueled the excitement of the whole Summit team. We’re looking forward to Eric’s warming brew and the rest of the beers that this great brewing crew has in store,” said Mark
Stutrud, Brewmaster and Founder of Summit Brewing Company.
The 90/- uses 100% malted Golden Promise, a barley variety grown in Scotland, as its base malt. Also in the mix are roasted barley, crystal and brown malts imported from the UK along with locally produced wheat malt to add further depth, complexity, and richness. In order to complement the malt, a combination of Target and Willamette hops are used along with the addition of wild Scottish heather to allow for some herbal and floral attributes. Heather is a
low-growing flowering evergreen shrub which has been used in brewing for thousands of years.
A quick beer history lesson: The symbol “/-“ in 90/- represents “shilling”, a currency denomination that was used in the United Kingdom, and as the beers were assessed a tax based on their strength, the number of shillings that a brew was taxed came to identify that style of ale.
The 90/- will be available in bottles and on draught for a limited time starting the week of November 16. For a sneak peek, the metro area Pizza Lucé restaurants will have it on tap starting Thursday, November 12. All metro locations will be tapping the beer at 5:30pm that
day and offering up $3 Summit pints. The downtown Minneapolis Pizza Lucé will feature bagpipers, food specials, and brewer Eric Blomquist will be on hand to pour the ceremonial first pint. Brewer Eric will also be at the Four Firkins beer store in St. Louis Park on Monday, November 16 from 6-8pm for sampling. The next beer in the Unchained Series will be available in the spring.
